WALTER "HANK" DEMORSKY

Walter “Hank” Demorsky, 85, of  Burnsville passed away Wednesday, May 19, 2010, at Yancey House Assisted Living.  A native of Waterbury, CT, he was a son of the late Louis and Anna Lubesky Demorsky and the husband of Mary Smith Demorsky who passed away in 1999.  Mr. Demorsky was a WWII Navy Veteran.

 

Surviving are 3 daughters:  Gwynn Fox of Margate, FL, Susan Demorsky of Frisco, TX and Mary Cifaldi of Weaverville; a son:  Mark Demorsky of Black Mountain; 2 grandsons:  Bryan Harper of Jacksonville, FL and Brad Wilson of Candler.

 

A memorial service will be held at 11 AM Saturday, May 22, 2010 in First Presbyterian Church.  Rev. Maggie Lauterer will officiate.

JOAN KING SHEPHERD

Joan King Shepherd, 75, of the Swiss Community, died Friday, May 15, 2010 at her home. A native of Haywood County, she was a daughter of the late John Joseph and May Harbin King of Canton and the wife of Gene Shepherd who died in 2008.  She was also preceded in death by brothers, John Joseph King and Richard E. King.  Joan was a US Navy Veteran.

 

Surviving are her children: Cynthia (Jeff) Glenn of Bristol, TN, Neva Johnson of Asheville, Joseph Johnson of Swannanoa and Hugh (Donna) Johnson of Kent, Ohio; a sister: Roberta (Charles) Bonham of Clyde, 12 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 2 P. M. Sunday, May 23, 2010 in Mount Pleasant Baptist Church.  Pastor Jerry Shelton will officiate.

ETHEL PETERSON BOONE

Ethel Peterson Boone, a direct descendant of Tobias Peterson, who was an original settler of Western North Carolina, passed away Monday, May 10, 2010 at the age of 72.  She was a daughter of the late Criss and Birdella Cooper Peterson and granddaughter of  Budger Mose Peterson.  She was also preceded in death by eight brothers and sisters.

 

She is survived by her loving husband, R. V. Boone; her children:  Chris, Becky, David and Daniel; three grandchildren and a sister, Oma Peterson.

 

A memorial service will be held at 1PM Sunday, September 5, 2010, at Peterson's Entertainment on Bear Wallow Road.

GLENDA BRACKINS ROBINSON ROLAND

Glenda Brackins Robinson Roland, 49, of Tatertown Road in Avery County, passed away Sunday, May 9, 2010, at her home.  A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of Geraldine Higgins Brackins of Burnsville and the late Harmon Brackins.  She was also preceded in death by her husband:  Delzie D. Robinson.

 

Surviving, in addition to her mother, are her husband, Jack Roland, of the home; sisters:  Gwen Thomas and Linda Murphy and husband, Audie, all of Burnsville; a special niece and nephew:  Victoria Murphy and Keith Robinson; a stepdaughter:  Michelle Alvarez; 2 stepsons:  Daniel and Scott Roland; 9 step grandchildren; and, a step great-granddaughter.

 

Funeral services will be held at 8 PM Thursday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Revs. Keith Miller and Denny Wilson will officiate.  A graveside service will be held at 11 AM Friday in the Brackins Family Cemetery on Bradford Road on Little Creek.

 

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

MARCIA BANKS EPPLER

Marcia Banks Eppler, 56, of Burnsville, went home to be with the Lord, Saturday, May 8, 2010 at her home.  A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of Grace Ray Dart and the late Jake Banks of Burnsville.  Marcia was a life-long member of Bolens Creek Baptist Church.  She was a 25-year employee of the U.S. Postal Service.  She took great pride in her work, but her family was her life.

 

Surviving, in addition to her mother, are her husband:  Dwight Eppler; 3 daughters:  Jennifer McNeill of Pittsboro, NC, Kimberly Reece of Denver, NC and Susan Wood of Sparta, NC; a son: Dwight Eppler Jr. of Midlothian, TX; 4 grandchildren:  Cameron and Jake McNeill, Jordan Eppler and Hope Wood; 3 brothers:  Tracy and Gordon Banks of Burnsville and Richard Banks of Unicoi, TN; nieces and nephews also survive.

 

A celebration of her life will be held at 7 PM Monday in the chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home. Graveside services will be held at 10 AM Tuesday in the McCracken Cemetery.

 

The family will receive friends from 5:30 to 7 PM Monday at the funeral home.

ARCEMUS L. "SAMMY" MITCHELL

Arcemus L. “Sammy” Mitchell, 61, of Mitchell Branch Road, died Friday, April 30, 2010, at his home.  A native of Yancey County he was a son of the late Edd and Ada Rogers Mitchell.  He was preceded in death by a brother:  Billy Mitchell.

 

Surviving are his children:  Michelle Belcher, Bridgette Mitchell and Sammy Mitchell, all of Burnsville, Tammy Bosier of Ft. Knox, KY and Cameron Mitchell of Brooklyn, NY; a brother:  Edward Mitchell of Burnsville; sisters:  Mary Alice McDowell of Burnsville and Mrs. Charles Robinson of Weaverville; and, 10 grandchildren.

 

Funeral services will be held at 7:30 PM Tuesday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  The Rev. Perry Norton will officiate.  Graveside services will be held at 10AM Wednesday in the Mitchell Family Cemetery on Mitchell Branch.

 

The family will receive friends from 6 until 7:30 PM Tuesday prior to the service at the funeral home.

FORD EDISON CANNON

 

Ford E. Cannon, 82, of Piney Hill, passed away Friday, April 30, 2010.  A native of Yancey County, he was the son of the late Charlie and Lula Bradford Cannon.  Ford retired from construction work after 29 years.  The most recent companies he was employed with were Blue Ridge Structure, APAC, and Taylor and Murphy.  After retirement he worked 6 years with Yancey County.  He was also a blacksmith and gun maker.  Ford enjoyed gardening, but most of all he loved the Lord and his family.

 

Surviving are his wife of 60 years:  Pearl Phillips Cannon; 7 children:  Joyce McIntosh and husband, Jimmy, of Burnsville, Jerry Cannon and wife, Helen, of Burnsville, Norma Hughes and husband, Danny, of Erwin, TN, Steve Cannon and wife, Barbara, of Burnsville; Mike Cannon and wife, Wanda Lea, of Burnsville, Johanna Foster and husband, David, of Erwin, TN and Debbie Cannon of the home; 12 grandchildren; 5 great grandchildren; 3 step grandchildren; 6 step great grandchildren; 4 sisters:  Mary Stissel of Erwin, TN, Daisy Higgins and husband, James, of Burnsville, Ester Williams and husband, Kenneth, of Burnsville, and Doris Edwards and husband, Theron, of Jonesboro, TN; and, 3 brothers:  Stanley Cannon of Burnsville, Ted Cannon of Green Mountain and Lester Cannon and wife, Francie, of Jonesboro.  Several nieces, nephews and a host of friends also survive.

 

Funeral services will be held at 2PM Tuesday in Bald Mountain Free Will Baptist Church, of which he was a member.  The Revs. Eugene Duyck, Junior Briggs, Jerry Jarvis and Danny Hughes will officiate.  Burial will follow in the Ford Cannon Family Cemetery.

 

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8PM Monday at Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.

MARCIA RAMSEY ALLISON

Marcia Ramsey Allison, 52, of Candler, passed away Thursday, April 29, 2010 at the home of her son.  A native of Buncombe County she was a daughter of Earlene Phillips Ramsey of Fletcher and the late Bruce Ramsey.  She was also preceded in death by a brother, Bruce ”Buzzy” Ramsey who died April 6, 2010.  She was a sweet and loving Mother, daughter and sister and will be missed by all who knew her.

 

Surviving in addition to her mother are a son:  Kendall Huntley and partner, Anna Whitley, of Burnsville; siblings:  Debra E. Ramsey and Sharon R. Kast of Fletcher, David Ramsey of Hendersonville, Michael Ramsey of Arden, Cathy Creaseman of Hendersonville and Shelly Conner of Fletcher.  Several nieces and nephews also survive.

 

Memorial services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Rev. David MacEachern will officiate.  Burial will be in the Watts Cemetery.

 

Following the burial, the family will receive friends at the home of her son, Kendall Huntley.

CHARLES E. "CHUCK" ROBINSON

Charles E. “Chuck” Robinson, 63, of Burnsville passed away Thursday, April 29, 2010 at his home.  A native of Yancey County, he was a son of Helen Honeycutt Robinson of Burnsville and the late Rex Robinson.  He was also preceded in death by a brother, Dennis Robinson.  He had recently retired from Ingles in Burnsville.  Chuck was an avid hunter and fisherman.

 

In addition to his mother, he is survived by 4 sons:  James Robinson and C. J. Robinson and wife, Jaida, of Burnsville, Chucky Robinson and Robert Robinson of Michigan; 6 grandchildren; a brother:  Lynn Robinson and 2 sisters:  Lorraine Allison and Debbie Miller.

 

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Rev. Bill Ponder will officiate.  Burial will be in the Honeycutt Cemetery.

 

The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. 

 

Memorials may be made to the family to assist in funeral expenses.

HELEN STYLES STREET

Helen Styles Street, 78, of Midland, PA, passed away Wednesday, April 28, 2010 in Beaver, PA.  A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late Carl and Rissie Bennett Styles.  She was the wife of Tim Street who died in 1979.  She was also preceded by a brother, Maurice.

 

Helen is survived by her daughter, Margo Boyle of Clover, SC; nine grandchildren: Darrin, Tabitha, Tracy, Travis, Rachel, Rebekah, Roman, Justin and David; fourteen special great-grandchildren: Jonathan, Kimberly, Jennifer, Kristin, Stephen, Samuel, Brandon, Alyssa, Travis, Lauren, Margo, Aurora, Ava, and Betty; her one sister: Harmie Lampkin of Newport News, VA; 4 brothers:  Herman Styles and wife, Billie, of Greenville, TN, Hubert Styles and wife, Mildred, of Charlotte, John Styles and wife, Shirley, of Clover, SC and Sam Styles and wife, Dixie, of Burnsville.

 

Funeral services will be held at Noon Monday, May 3, 2010 in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Grandsons, Justin and David Boyle will officiate.  Interment will follow in Fairview Cemetery.

 

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
