GRETCHEN ROBINSON

Gretchen Robinson, 84, of Burnsville passed away Monday, June 21, 2010 at Brookside Rehabilitation and Care.  A native of Madison County, she was a daughter of the late Clyde and Dexter Ray Chandler and the wife of the late Ralph Robinson.  Gretchen was a music teacher for 35 years.

 

Surviving are a son:  Dan Robinson of Burnsville; granddaughters:  Carolyn Straight of Jacksonville, FL and Rhonda Reynolds of Oak Hill, OH; a nephew:  Joe Chandler and a niece: Kathy Rice both of Mars Hill.

 

A graveside service will be held at 2:00 PM Wednesday in Academy Cemetery.  Rev. Wes Sharpe will officiate.

 

The family will receive friends from 1 until 2:00 PM Wednesday at Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.

LARRY HOWARD BOONE

Larry Howard Boone, 68, of Lenior, went to be with the Lord, Thursday, June 17, 2010 at Valdese Hospital.  A native of Yancey County, he was a son of the late Earl and Georgia Parker Boone.  Larry was a retired employee of Shuford Mills in Hudson.  He was preceded in death by a sister, Thelma Boone and a brother, Daniel Boone.  He enjoyed gardening.  He attended River Valley Baptist Church.

 

Surviving are 4 children:  Carolyn Webb and husband, Alan, of Morganton, Terry Boone and wife, Margie, of Spruce Pine, Garry Boone of Cajah Mountain and Regina Wilson of Hudson; a special friend, Reba Boone of Cajah Mountain; 8 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren; 7 sisters:  Carliss Briggs and Clara Lee Briggs of Burnsville, Jennie Smith and Noma Kay Walker of Marion, Sanna Fay Honeycutt of Unicoi, TN, Phyllis Bradshaw of Morganton and Darlis Watson of Concord; 5 brothers:  Calvin Boone of Celo, Charlie Boone of Burnsville, Leslie Boone, C. W. Boone and Paul Boone of Marion.

 

Funeral services will be held at 4:00 p.m. Saturday in the chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Revs. Kenneth Shew, G. B. Garland and Steve Taylor will officiate.  Burial will be in the Gurley-Bryant Cemetery at Celo.

 

The family will receive friends from 3 until 4:00 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home.

IRENE HILL McINTOSH

Irene Hill McIntosh, 96, of the Cane River Community, passed away Tuesday, June 15, 2010 at WNC Baptist Home.  A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late Gilbert and Valencia English Hill and the wife of Jack McIntosh who died in 2006.  She was also preceded in death by sisters:  Vina Proffitt, Eunice Moser and Pauline Grobman, and brothers:  Odus, Edwin, Kelly and Dr. L. L. Hill.  Irene was a member of Cane River Baptist Church.

 

Surviving are two daughters:  Pauline McIntosh of Asheville and Peggy Chapman of Denver, CO; granddaughters:  Susan Cabral and Julie Burke; great granddaughter:  Michaela Sanchez; great grandson:  Jackson Cabral and a brother:  Broadus Hill of Asheville.

 

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Rev. Shane Cassida will officiate.  Burial will be in the Proffitt Cemetery on Hardscrabble Road.

 

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

POLLY COOPER McCURRY

Polly Cooper McCurry, 59, of Green Mountain went home to be with the Lord, Tuesday, June 15, 2010 at her home.  A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late John W. and Myrtle Cooper.  She was also preceded in death by brothers:  Paul and David Cooper.  Polly was a former employee of OMC, Burnsville.

 

Surviving are her son, Ray McCurry and wife, Cindy, of Burnsville,  brothers: Robert Cooper and wife, Elaine, of Green Mountain, Arthur Lee Cooper and wife, Carol, of Mars Hill, Ernest and D. J. Cooper of Houston, TX, Jack Cooper and wife, Ranada, of El Paso, TX, Bill Cooper and wife, Ruth, of Gray, TN and George Warrick and wife, Pat, of Deltona, FL; a sister: Valine Newquest and husband, Tom, of Chicago, IL; a grandson: Colton Brooks of Burnsville; a nephew: Stephen Cooper and wife, Sara; great nieces: Christian and Kennady Cooper of Green Mountain and several other nieces and nephews.

 

Funeral services will be held at 8:00 p.m. Thursday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Revs. Russell Hughes and Billy Styles will officiate.  A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday in the Styles Family Cemetery on Sampson Branch. 

 

The family will receive friends from 6 until 8:00 p.m. Thursday prior to the service at the funeral home.

VICKIE LAWS HOLLOWAY

Vickie Laws Holloway, 46, of Clearmont School Road, was called home Saturday, June 5, 2010, at St. Joseph Hospital.  A native and life long resident of Yancey County, she was a daughter of Junior and Lennie Hensley Laws of Burnsville.  Vickie was a former employee of Burnsville Veterinary Clinic.

 

Surviving, in addition to her parents, are her husband of 29 years:  Mike Holloway; a son:  Brian Holloway; 2 granddaughters:  Brianna Paige and Andrea Rayne Holloway; a brother:  Ricky Dale Laws and wife, Mary, all of Burnsville; a niece and nephew:  Heather and Israel Laws; and, special friends:  Lisa Shepherd and Kathy Abner, and all who stood by her during her illness.

 

Funeral services will be held at 2 P. M. Wednesday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  The Rev. Steve Penland will officiate.

 

The family will receive friends from 12 noon until 2 P M Wednesday, prior to the service at the funeral home.

 

At other times the family will be at the home of her parents, at 84 Clearmont School Road. 

DELLA NORTON RANDOLPH

Della Norton Randolph, of Burnsville, passed away Friday June 4, 2010, at Brookside Rehab and Care.  Formerly of Michigan, she was a daughter of the late William and Martha Norton.  She retired as a store manager of H.A. Powells Studios in Detroit, MI.  Della was preceded in death by 5 sisters and 4 brothers.

 

Surviving are her husband of 53 years:   Eugene G. Randolph; a brother–in-law and sister-in-law:  Bill and Pat Randolph; special niece: Ali Randolph; and, nephews: Brandon and Branson Randolph, all of Burnsville.

 

Funeral Services will be held at 7 PM Sunday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home. The Rev. Wes Sharpe will officiate. Graveside services will be held at 10 AM Monday in the Holcombe Cemetery.

 

The family will receive friends from 6 until 7PM Sunday prior to the service at the funeral home.

GETER KEITH HANEY

Geter Haney, 67, of Scronce Creek, went home to be with the Lord Thursday, June 3, 2010.  A native of Yancey County, he was a son of the late Lear Haney.  He was a well loved member of the Bee Log Baptist Church.

 

Surviving are his wife of 48 years:  Barbara Miller Haney; a daughter:  Leisa Simmons and husband, Rodney; a daughter:  Carolyn; and 2 sons:  Coy and Gene, all of Burnsville; 9 grandchildren; and, 2 great grandchildren.

 

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Saturday in Bee Log Baptist Church.  The Rev. Kelly Bryant will officiate.  Burial will be in the Bee Log Church Cemetery.

 

The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 7:00 PM Friday at Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.

JOSEPH CARROLL GILLESPIE

Joseph Carroll Gillespie, 71, of Burnsville, passed away Monday, May 31, 2010, at his home.  A native of Yancey County, he was a son of the late Byrd and Mary Young Gillespie.  Joe was a U.S. Marine Corps Combat Veteran, and retired as Chief of Police of Burnsville in 1992 after 20 years service.  He was a life long member of Higgins Memorial United Methodist Church.

 

Surviving are his wife:  Linda Metcalf Gillespie; a daughter:  Audria Lynn Gillespie Briggs and husband, John; and a grandson:  Hunter Briggs, all of Bakersville; 3 brothers:  Charles Gillespie and wife, Becky, of Burnsville, David Gillespie and wife, Deanna of Kentucky and John Gillespie and wife, Patricia, of Florida; sister-in-law:  Jerri Storie and husband, Tom, of Burnsville; nephews:  Joe and Davis Gillespie, Keith and Kelly Gillespie, Andrew and Joshua Gillespie, and Joel and Adam Storie.

 

Funeral services will be held at 7:30 P.M. Wednesday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  The Rev. Wes Sharpe will officiate.  A graveside service will be held at 11:00 A.M. Thursday in the Grover Hunter Cemetery.

 

The family will receive friends from 6:30 until 7:30 P.M. Wednesday prior to the service at the funeral home.

 

Memorials may be made to the charity of one’s choice.

CHARLES DAVID MALKEMES

Charles David Malkemes, 66, of Boca Raton, Florida, passed away Friday, May 28, 2010, at his summer home in Micaville, NC.  A graduate of Penn State, he was a retired electrical engineer with IBM.  He was the loving husband of Mary Ann Ambrose Malkemes, father of Amy Heh and husband, Steve, and Brian Malkemes and wife, Kyre; and grandfather of Jacob Heh.  He is also survived by siblings:  Raymond Malkemes and wife, Patricia, Carol Hess, Barbara Beamer and husband, Jack, and sisters-in-law:  Kathy Malkemes and Kathy Ambrose.  Chuck is preceded in death by his brother: James Malkemes; and, brother-in-law:  David Hess.

 

A funeral mass will be at 11 A. M. Friday, June 4, 2010, at St. Luke Catholic Church in Mint Hill, NC with luncheon to follow.

JACK WALTER TIPTON

Jack Walter Tipton, 90, of Sweetwater Road, Green Mountain, passed away Thursday, May 20, 2010 at Brookside Rehabilitation and Care.  A native of Yancey County, he was a son of the late John and Minnie Whitson Tipton.  He was also preceded in death by his wife, Betty Webb Tipton; his son, Jimmy Tipton; 5 sisters:  Maphre Young, Carrie Tipton, Margie Higgins, Ella Jay Sparks and Marie Martin; and 3 brothers:  Isaac, Jake and Jule Tipton.  Jack was a WWII Army Veteran and retired from Broyhill Furniture in Marion.  He was a member of Southbend Free Will Baptist Church.

 

Surviving are 3 daughters:  Linda Grindstaff and husband, Eddie, of Green Mountain, Wanda Fox and husband, Ronnie, of Burnsville and Carolyn England and husband, Billy, of Nebo; 6 grandchildren:  Brandi Silver, Kelly Loven, April Buchanan, Steven Fox, Trinity Huskins and Orin Wilson; a brother:  Arthur Tipton of Paducah, KY; 8 grandchildren:  Baylea, Bently, Micheal, Tyler, Jordon, Blake, Tanner and Erica; and special friends:  Phillip and Vada Woody.

 

Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday in the Peterson-McCourry Cemetery.  Rev. Philip Garland will officiate.
