HATTIE WILCOX McCOURRY

Hattie Wilcox McCourry, 81, of Cherry Lane, Burnsville, went home to be with the Lord Monday, July 19, 2010, at her home.  Born in Mitchell County, she was a daughter of the late Rev. Handy and Fairene Forbes Wilcox.  She was the wife of Rev. Troy McCourry who passed away April 9, 2009.  Hattie, along with her husband and son, owned and operated Troy’s Greenhouse and Variety for over 52 years.  She was a loyal pastor’s wife during Troy’s 27 years at Southside FWB Church in Erwin, TN and 23 years at Pensacola FWB Church.  Hattie was preceded in death by brothers and sister:  Bruce, Ralph, Cellie, Alfred and Sam Wilcox.  She will long be remembered for her loving, caring and generous nature.

 

Surviving are her son:  Wade McCourry of the home; sisters and brothers:  Janie Whitson and husband, Brooks, of Unicoi, TN, Claude Wilcox and wife, Patricia, and Bonnie Bowman and husband, Hugh, both of Kingsport, TN, Ronnie Wilcox and wife, Patty, of Mars Hill, and Jim Wilcox and wife, Wanda, of Unicoi, TN.  Also surviving are her McCourry brothers and sisters-in-law, a host of nieces and nephews, and, a special friend and caregiver:  Louise Honeycutt.

 

Funeral services will be held at 8PM Thursday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  The Revs. Bobby Revis, Frank Cable and Roger Whitson will officiate.  A graveside service will be held at 11AM Friday in Holcombe Cemetery.

 

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8PM Thursday prior to the service at the funeral home.

RUTH JOBE RICE

Ruth Jobe Rice, 95, of Burnsville went home to be with the Lord, Saturday, July 17, 2010 at Mountain Manor Assisted Living.  A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late Captain Isaac Tipton Jobe and Alice Evans Jobe and the wife of Carlie R. Rice who died in 1984. She was also preceded in death by brothers: Jess, Bill, and Carl Jobe. She was a graduate of Clearmont High School and returned there to teach for 43 years.  Ruth attended Burnsville First Presbyterian Church.  She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, and in 1962, she started Volunteering at Asheville V.A. Medical Center where she served more than 10,000 hours.  She was also a member of the Sgt. E.L. Randolph Chapter 57 DAV Auxiliary.  She was a former Board Member of the Yancey County Senior Center and delivered meals on wheels for several years.

 

Surviving are a niece:  Alice Jobe; nephews:  Willie Jobe and wife, Willoree, and Kenny Jobe all of Burnsville and Gary Jobe and wife, Sandy, of Penland.  Ruth was a special “Mam Maw” to Robbie, Richard, C.J., Paige and Josh Jobe of Burnsville, Leigh Jobe of Tennessee and Adam Jobe of Asheville.

 

Funeral services will be held at 7:30 PM Monday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Graveside services will be held at 11 AM Tuesday in Forest Lawn Memorial Park at Candler.

 

The family will receive friends from 6 until 7:30 PM Monday prior to the service at the funeral home, and at other times, will be at the home of Willie and Willoree Jobe.

JEWELL MATHIS PENLAND

Jewell Mathis Penland, 87, of Swannanoa, went home to be with the Lord, Saturday, July 17, 2010 at John R. Keever Solace Center.  A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late Roy and Evie McIntosh Mathis and the wife of Jack Penland who died in 1986. She was also preceded in death by a son, Lee Roy Penland, and brothers: Junior Mathis and Ward Mathis.

 

Surviving are 3 daughters:  Pauline Blankenship and husband, Jerome, Ethel McPeters and husband, Clifford, all of Burnsville, and Tammy Penland of Swannanoa; 3 sons:  Jackie Penland, Ronnie Penland and Joey Penland, all of Swannanoa; 9 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren; 5 sisters:  Mary Robinson of Burnsville, Marie Ferguson of Jonesborough, TN, Hannah Neighbors of Hamlet, Louise Young of Burnsville and Deborah Mathis of Asheville; 3 brothers:  Edd Mathis of Hickory, Wayne Mathis of Jacksonville, NC and Ted Mathis of Asheville.

 

Funeral services will be held at 7 PM Sunday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  The Revs.  Clyde Thomason and Stacy Elkins will officiate.  Graveside services will be at 11 AM Monday in the Metcalf Cemetery on Horton Creek.

 

The family will receive friends from 6 until 7 PM Sunday prior to the service at the funeral home.

ADA RAY MITCHELL

Ada Ray Mitchell, 92, of Nebo, went home to be with the Lord, Friday, July 16, 2010 at her home.  A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late Melvin and Nora Honeycutt Ray and the wife of Adam Mitchell who died in 1992.

 

Surviving are 2 daughters:  Carol Adkins and husband, Ralph, of Nebo and Joyce Ratcliffe and husband, Roger, of Newnan, GA; 2 grandsons:  Eric Adkins and wife Tracey of Marion and Steve Ratcliffe and wife, Natalivette, of Grantville, GA; 3 great grandchildren: Meredith and Jackson Adkins and Luis Ratcliffe.

 

Funeral services will be held at 2 PM Monday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  The Rev. Bill Long will officiate.  Burial will be in the McCracken Cemetery.

 

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

  

BILLY JOE BARTLETT

Billy Joe Bartlett, 58, of Spruce Pine passed away unexpectedly Thursday, July 15, 2010 at Mission Hospital.  A native of Yancey County, he was a son of the late Lee and Gladys Boone Bartlett.  He was a U. S. Army Veteran and a current employee of NC Department of Corrections in Spruce Pine where he had been employed for the past 20 years.  Bill was an avid horse lover and spent all his spare time enjoying his horses.  Bill lived every day to its fullest.  He was a member of Big Crabtree Baptist Church.

 

Surviving are his wife, Karen Willis Bartlett; a daughter:  Leslie Bartlett Crowder and husband, Toby, of Burnsville, 2 sisters:  Linda Carroway and husband, Dennis, of Burnsville and Brenda Earley and husband, Lee, of Spruce Pine; 2 step-sons:  Travis McKinney of Orlando, FL and Tony McKinney of Spruce Pine; a step-daughter:  Brandi Forbes and husband, David, of Spruce Pine; 2 grandchildren:  Emilee and Katy Crowder of Burnsville; 2 step-grandchildren:  Dawson and Breeounna Forbes of Spruce Pine; and, his father-in-law:  Claude Willis of Spruce Pine. 

 

Funeral services will be held at 3:00 PM Sunday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Rev. Toby Crowder will officiate.  Burial will be in the Big Crabtree Baptist Church Cemetery.   The N. C. Department of Corrections will serve as honor guard.

 

The family will receive friends from 1 until 3:00 PM prior to the service at the funeral home.

DOLORES DeSUMMA

Delores “Rusty” DeSumma, 79, of Burnsville, passed away Tuesday, July 13, 2010 at her home.  A native of Chester, PA, she was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Wood.  She was preceded in death by a sister and a brother.

 

Surviving are her husband of 56 years:  Andrew DeSumma; a daughter:  Katherine of New Jersey; 2 sons:  Andrew of Florida and Nicholas of New Jersey.  Several grandchildren also survive.

 

No services are planned at this time.

DONALD LAMBERT

Donald Lambert, 69, of Burnsville, passed away Saturday, July 10, 2010 at Blue Ridge Regional Hospital in Spruce Pine.  A native of Madison County, he was a son of the late Theodore and Flossie Lewis Lambert.  Donald was a U S Air Force Veteran and a former building inspector for Yancey County.

 

Surviving are his wife, Peggy Hopper Lambert, three daughters: Lynn Alves and husband Peter of Clyde, Elaine Wilhelm and husband Rick of Waynesville and Janet Hughes and husband Aaron of Burnsville; a son, Terry Lambert and wife Jackie of Angier, NC, two sisters: Vivian Flynn of Marshall and Clara Ball of Gastonia, an uncle, Russell Lambert of Boise, VA, five grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 2PM Wednesday in Cane River Baptist Church.  The Rev. Shane Cassida will officiate.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.

MADGE ROBINSON

 Madge Robinson of Hunter’s Run Apartments went home to be with the Lord, Saturday, July 10, 2010.  A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late Rev. Ade Buchanan and Edith Presnell Buchanan and the wife of Virgil Robinson, who died in 1971.  She was also preceded in death by 2 sisters and 4 brothers.  Madge attended Cane River Baptist Church.

 

Surviving are three daughters, Barbara Huskins and husband Alton of Spruce Pine, Maureen Penland and husband Gerald of Burnsville and Joanne Torres and husband William of Charlotte, two sisters, Virginia Davis of Burnsville and Emma Jean Beaver of Forest City, 5 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren.

 

Funeral services will be held at 8 P M Monday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Rev. Shane Cassida will officiate.  A graveside service will be held at 11 AM Tuesday in the Double Island Baptist Church Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 6:30 until 8 PM Monday prior to the service at the funeral home.

JOHNNY BUCKNER

Johnny Buckner, 78, of the Bald Creek Community, passed away Saturday, July 10, 2010, at Brookside Rehabilitation in Burnsville.  A native of Yancey County, he was a son of the late Jesse and Pearl Fender Buckner.  He was preceded in death by a brother:  Tommy Buckner; a sister:  Doris Buckner; and, a sister-in-law:  Betty Buckner.  Johnny was a US Army Veteran and a cattle broker.

 

Surviving are his wife of 48 years:  Peggy Webb Buckner; brothers:  Jack Buckner and wife, Barbara, Hugh Buckner, and Donald Buckner and wife, Rachel; a sister:  Iva Nell Buckner; and a sister-in-law:  Jessie Buckner, all of Burnsville.  Several nieces and nephews also survive.

 

Funeral services will be held at 8PM Tuesday in Mount Pleasant Baptist Church, of which he was a member.  The Revs. Jerry Shelton and Shane Cassida will officiate.  A graveside service will be held at 11AM Wednesday in Fairview Cemetery at Horton Hill.

 

The family will receive friends from 6 until 8PM prior to the service at the church, and at other times will be at the home of Iva Nell Buckner.

MADGE BIGGS

Madge Elkins Biggs, 80, of Burnsville, passed away Saturday, July 10, 2010, at Brookside Rehabilitation and Care.  A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late Kelce and Mary Robinson Elkins, and the wife of Joseph Leonard Biggs who died in 1971.  She was also preceded in death by two sons:  Jay Brian Elkins and William Howard Biggs.

 

Surviving are 2 daughters:  Ruby Cutway of Burnsville and Marlene Riddle and husband, Mack, of Double Island; 4 sons:  Gary Biggs of Greeneville, TN, Richard Biggs of Dahlonega, GA, Bobby Biggs of Burnsville and J. D. Biggs of Windom; a sister:  Levada Parker of Hickory; 22 grandchildren; and, 29 great grandchildren.

 

Funeral services will be held at 7PM Tuesday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  The Revs. Billy Styles and Russell Hughes will officiate.  A graveside service will be held at 2PM Wednesday in the Robinson Cemetery on Bakers Creek.

The family will receive friends 1 hour prior to the service on Tuesday at the funeral home.
