J. PAUL ANGLIN

J. Paul Anglin, 85, of Hazelwood, went to be with the Lord Wednesday, January 26, 2011, at the Brian Center of Waynesville.  A native of Yancey County, he was a son of the late J. Bruce and Lena Styles Anglin.  Paul was a World War II Army Veteran, and a retired employee of Southern Bell after 30 years service.  He was a member of Allens Creek Baptist Church in Waynesville.

 

Surviving are his wife of 66 years:  Pauline Thompson Anglin; daughters:  Janet Boyer and husband, Wayne, of Fuquay-Varina, and Linda Presnell of Waynesville; 2 granddaughters:  Dawn Buddenhagen and Penny Arrington; 2 grandsons:  Matthew and Andrew Boyer; and, 4 great grandchildren:  Ashley Rushton and Mahlah Arrington and Olivia and Allee Boyer.

 

Funeral services will be held at 2PM Saturday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  The Revs. Roger Thompson and Andy Boyer will officiate.  Burial will be in Youngs Chapel Free Will Baptist Church Cemetery.

 

The family will receive friends 1 hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

WILLIAM HAROLD PRESNELL

William Harold Presnell, 87, a life-long resident of Yancey County went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, January 25, 2011.  He was the son of the late William and Grace Young Presnell.

 

Surviving are his daughter:  Sharon Morgan and husband, Michael, of Weaverville; a son: Alan Presnell and wife, Debbie, of Black Mountain; 5 grandchildren:  Meredith, Alexis, Kaitlin, Julianne, and Will; one great granddaughter:  Lanie; and cousins who are very dear to the family.

 

Harold served in WWII from 1942 to 1945 in the Pacific Theater.  When he returned, he married Alma Laws.  They were married for 54 years before Alma’s passing in January, 2010.  He was a life-long member of Newdale Presbyterian Church.  He will be dearly missed. 

 

Funeral services will be held at 2 PM Friday in the Newdale Presbyterian Church.  Rev. Mike Brazelle will officiate.  Burial will be in the church cemetery. 

 

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Newdale Presbyterian Church Cemetery Fund, c/o Marcheta Blackburn, 100 Adam Lane, Burnsville, NC 28714.

CRAIG DEYTON

Craig Deyton, 86, of the Mine Fork Community, went home to be with the Lord Monday, January 17, 2011, at his home.  A native of Yancey County, he was a son of the late Wesley and Carrie Robinson Deyton.  Craig retired from French Broad EMC after 38 years service, and was an avid farmer.  He was a faithful member of Green Mountain Free Will Baptist Church, and a  wonderful husband and father.

 

Surviving are his wife of 63 years:  Loyce Woody Deyton; 4 sons:  Rodney Deyton and wife, Beverly, Darryl Deyton and wife, Brenda, and Mike Deyton and wife, Lynne, all of Burnsville, and Chuck Deyton and wife, Elaine, of Marion; 2 sisters:  Kate Laws and Velma Harding; a brother:  Jimmy Deyton of Burnsville; 10 grandchildren; and, 8 great grandchildren.

 

Funeral services will be held at 2PM Thursday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  The Revs. Steve Penland and Edd Fraizer will officiate.  Private burial will be in the Craig Deyton Family Cemetery.

 

The family will receive friends 1 hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

BILLIE BYRD

Billie Byrd, 81, of Coxes Creek went to be with the Lord Monday, January 17, 2011 at Brookside Rehabilitation & Care.  A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late John and Georgia Randolph Phillips and wife of Rotha Byrd who died in 1990.  She was also preceded in death by 2 sisters; 2 brothers; a granddaughter:  Brittany Miller and a step grandson:  Mark McMahan.  Billie was a retired employee of Hickory Springs.

 

Surviving are her children:  Joey Byrd and wife, Kathy, of Green Mountain, Debi Beaver and husband, Tony, of Micaville, Gail Byrd and fiancé, Tom McMahan, and Becky Honeycutt and husband, Mike, of Burnsville; 6 grandchildren; 5 step grandchildren and 6 step great-grandchildren.

 

Funeral services will be held at 8 PM Thursday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Revs. Hasket Honeycutt, Jr. and Clyde Metcalf, Jr. will officiate.  A graveside service will be held at 11 AM Friday in the McCurry Cemetery on Barn Road.

 

The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 PM Thursday prior to the service at the funeral home, and at other times, will be at her home on Coxes Creek.

PAULINE CRAIN

On January 17, Pauline Crain moved from Brookside to her beautiful new home in Heaven.  Waiting to welcome her home, was her beloved husband, Billy Crain, her grandsons: Kyle Lyda and McDaniel Crain; daughter-in-law:  Val; and son-in-law:  Larry.  She was also preceded in death by her parents:  Geter and Pearl Hensley English; six brothers and one sister.

 

Left behind to cherish her memory and anxiously waiting to be reunited are her sons:  Ronald, Stanley, Charles and Morris; her daughters:  Scarlet, Doris, Nadine, Donna Kay and Mary Ann; a brother:  Billy Hensley; 24 grandchildren and 29 great grandchildren.

 

Funeral services will be held at 8 PM Wednesday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Revs. Clifton McCurry and Don Mitchell will officiate.  A graveside service will be held at 11:30 Thursday in the Roy Crain Cemetery. 

 

The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 PM Wednesday prior to the service at the funeral home.

VELMA ANGEL HILL

Velma Angel Hill, 101, of Scronce Creek Road went home to be with the Lord, Monday, January 17, 2011.  A lifelong resident of Yancey County, she was the daughter of the late Starling and Elizabeth Tomberlin Angel and the wife of Edd Hill who passed away in 1995.  She was also preceded in death by two children:  a still born son and a daughter, Reva Jo; sisters:  Alma and Hattie; brothers:  Carlie, Gudger, Herman, Theron, Burnis and Hosea.  Velma was a lifelong member and the oldest member of Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church to which she dedicated her life until her failing health.  She never worked outside the home, but had a cottage industry of making hooked rugs in her early life involving many family members.

 

Surviving are a daughter:  Fredia Hill and Gene Winner of Asheville; a son:  Keith Hill and wife, Helena, of Ponte Vedra Beach, FL; a granddaughter: Andrea Hill; several beloved nieces and nephews; and caregivers:  Orpha Woodby, Juanita Edwards, Tonya Buchanan, Lisa Benge and Roberta Young to whom the family wishes to give special thanks.

 

Funeral services will be held at 7 PM Wednesday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Rev. Jerry Shelton will officiate.  A graveside service will be held at 10 AM Thursday in the Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church Cemetery.

 

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

DORIS YOUNG NESBITT

Doris Young Nesbitt, 88, of the Newdale Community, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, January 15, 2011, after a short illness.  A native of Yancey County, she was the daughter of th late Guy and Zora Marsh Young.  She was also preceded in death by her husband:  George Nesbitt; a nephew:  Danny McCurry; and, 4 siblings.  Doris was a graduate of Appalachian State University, and devoted her life to education, teaching in both the Yancey and Avery County school systems, spanning a 40+ year career.  She touched the lives of many students.

 

Surviving are a sister:  Frances McCurry of the home; a nephew:  Charles McCurry of Micaville; a grand nephew:  Charlie McCurry; 2 grand nieces:  Amanda McCurry of Asheville and Aimee Kiser of Candler; 2 great grand nephews; and, 1 great grand niece.

 

Funeral services will be held at 2PM Monday in Newdale Presbyterian Church, of which she was a member.  The Rev. Billy Mitchell will officiate.  Burial will be in the church cemetery.

 

The family will receive friends 1 hour prior to the service at the church.

KATIE GREGORY

Katie Gregory, 77, of Charlie Brown Road, went to be with the Lord Saturday, January 15, 2011, at St. Joseph Campus of Mission Hospitals.  A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late Wallace and Alma Lawing McDowell.  She was also preceded in death by sisters:  Ophie Ogle and Faye Buchanan.  Kate was a life long member of Bolens Creek Baptist Church.

 

Surviving are her husband of 61 years:  Ronald Gregory; 2 sons:  Mike Gregory and Ronnie Gregory and wife, Sandra; a sister:  Clara Harris; brothers:  Ralph McDowell and J. B. McDowell; 3 grandsons:  Jason, Brandon and Jeremy Gregory; and, 2 great grandchildren, all of Burnsville.

 

Funeral services will be held at 7PM Sunday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Dr. Chris Morgan will officiate.  A graveside service will be held at 11AM Monday in West Burnsville Church Cemetery.

 

The family will receive friends 1 hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

G. MILTON "BOB" BETTINI

G. Milton “Bob” Bettini, 79, of Burnsville, passed away Thursday, January 13, 2011, following complications from an automobile accident.  A North Carolina native, he was orphaned as an infant and was reared by his grandparents, aunts, and uncles.  Bob was a Southern Baptist minister.  After making his home in Yancey County, he directed the 4H Friends Mentoring Program of the Yancey County Cooperative Extension Service.

 

Surviving are a son:  Russell Lynn Bettini and wife, Bonnie, of Franklinton, and children:  Jessica and Bryson Bettini; and, a daughter:  Joyce Bettini and spouse, Mark Williard, of Spring Hope.

 

Funeral services will be held at 2:30 PM Sunday, January 16, 2011, at the First Baptist Church of Burnsville.  The Rev. Richard Muri will officiate.  Burial will be in the Academy Cemetery.

 

The family will receive friends 1 hour prior to the service at the church.

HELEN ROBINSON

Helen Robinson, 85, of Burnsville, passed away Friday, January 7, 2011 at Mountain Manor Assisted Living.  A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late Haskie and Ora Lewis Honeycutt and the wife of Rex E. Robinson who died in 2000.  She was also preceded in death by sons Charles and Dennis Robinson and brothers Mack and Roy Honeycutt.

 

Surviving are two daughters: Lorraine Allison of Burnsville and Debra Miller of Phoenix, Arizona; a son; Lynn Robinson of Burnsville, two sisters: Frances Edwards of Burnsville and Carrie Garland of Asheville; two brothers: Rev. Haskett Honeycutt, Jr. of Burnsville and Dean Honeycutt of Henderson, NC, 13 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.

 

Funeral services will be held at 1 P. M. Saturday, January 15, 2011 in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  The Revs. Bill Ponder and Haskett Honeycutt, Jr. will officiate.  Burial will be in the Honeycutt Family Cemetery on McKinney Branch.

 

The family will receive friends from 4 until 6 P. M. Friday and one hour prior to the service on Saturday at the funeral home.
