SUSIE ELAINE WHITSON

Susie Elaine Whitson, 62, of Burnsville went to meet the Lord, Sunday, March 6, 2011 at Blue Ridge Regional Hospital.  A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late Floyd and Frances Hughes Whitson.

 

Surviving are her children:  Kimberly Deyton and wife, Wanda, of Burnsville, Jeffrey Deyton of Lenoir, and Christopher Deyton and wife, Gina, of Burnsville; a sister:  Regina Pollard of Newton; a brother:  Brady G. Whitson of Mississippi; 5 grandchildren:  Cameron, Kayla, Wade, Austin and Krista Deyton and a great granddaughter:  Audrina Deyton.

 

Funeral services will be held at 7:00 PM Tuesday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Pastor Leonard Lindsey and Rev. Harold Grindstaff will officiate.  A graveside service will be held at 11:00 AM Wednesday in Pleasant Grove Cemetery.

 

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

 

Memorials may be made to Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home to assist with funeral expenses.

FLORA GRINDSTAFF WYATT

Flora Grindstaff Wyatt, 87, of the Newdale community, passed away Saturday, March 5, 2011, at Blue Ridge Regional Hospital in Spruce Pine.  A native of Mitchell County, she was a daughter of the late Charlie and Esther Boston Grindstaff, and the wife of the late Roy Wyatt.  She was also preceded in death by a daughter:  Azalene Hoover; and, a son:  Robert Wyatt.  Flora was a member of Newdale Presbyterian Church.

Surviving are 5 grandchildren:  Tammy Allen and Randy Hoover of Newdale, Bobby Wyatt and Valorie Wyatt of Lincolnton, and Debbie Salyer of Elizabethton, TN; 8 great grandchildren; and, a great, great grandson.

Funeral services will be held at 2PM Tuesday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Rev. Holt Whitson, Jr. will officiate.  Burial will be in the Newdale Presbyterian Church Cemetery.

The family will receive friends 1 hour prior to the service at the funeral home, and at other times will be at the home of Tammy Allen, 39 Blackjack Road, Burnsville, NC.

Memorials may be made to assist with funeral expenses.

CHARLOTTE LUCILLE JOHNSON JARRETT

Charlotte Lucille Johnson Jarrett, 89, surrounded by the love and care of her family, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, March 2, 2011 at her home in Terrell, NC.   Mrs. Jarrett was born October 14, 1921, in Watauga County, NC.  Her parents were the late Otis Lafayette and Zora Isaacs Johnson of Lenoir, NC.

 

Lucille was married to Homer Woodrow Jarrett for 57 years until his death in 2001. They lived in Burnsville from 1949 until 2001.  She was also preceded in death by siblings: Blanche Johnson Sherrill, Thelma Johnson Walker, Lonnie L. Johnson, and Johnny Johnson.  She was a member of Sherrill’s Ford Presbyterian Church.  Her interests were family, cooking, gardening, and canning. 

 

She is survived by her three sons, Charles H. Jarrett and wife, Carol, of Fort Mill, SC; Jim C. Jarrett and wife, Mary, of Terrell, NC; and Michael D. Jarrett of Charlotte, NC;  a grandson:  Matthew E. Jarrett and wife, Joy; granddaughters: Lacey Leigh Turner, Michelle Jarrett Tabares, and Erin Jarrett Reiter and husband, Boyd; great-grandchildren: Andrew Shumaker, Matthew Cole Jarrett, Taylor Elaina Jarrett,  Emersyn Rae Reiter, Presley Rae Reiter, Adrian Tabares, Mia Tabares, and Sara Tabares; two brothers:  C. Burl Johnson of Hickory and Curtis Johnson of Lenoir.

 

Funeral services will be held at 3 PM Saturday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Rev. Maggie Lauterer will officiate.  Burial will be in the Lily Branch Baptist Church Cemetery.

 

The family will receive friends from 1:30 until 3 PM prior to the service at the funeral home.

JOEY (BIG BOY) MURPHY

Joey (Big Boy) Murphy, 47, of Burnsville, entered into eternal rest at his home on Tuesday, March 1, 2011, surrounded by his loved ones.  Left to cherish his memory are his parents:  Joe and Patsy Murphy; twin brother:  Joel (Little Boy) Murphy; beloved nephew:  Tyler; his fiancée:  Regina Rathburn and her family; a host of aunts, uncles, great aunts and uncles, and dear friends.

Joey was born on August 24, 1963.  He loved to play ball, hunt and race mud trucks.

Funeral services will be held at 11AM Saturday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  The Rev. Tracy Carroll and Maxine Pangle will officiate.  Burial will be in the Gouge Family Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 6 until 8PM Friday at the funeral home.

JO ANN AYERS

Jo Ann Ayers, 75, of Green Mountain, went to be with the Lord, Sunday, February 27, 2011 at St. Joseph Hospital.  A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late Joe and Florence Silvers Higgins and the wife of Ott Ayers who died in 2001.  She was also preceded in death by a brother:  Bobby Higgins.

 

She is survived by her children:  Annette Ayers and Darrell Ayers of the home, Diane Laws and husband, Lewis, of Micaville, Danny Ayers and wife, Miriam, of Green Mountain and David Ayers and wife, Lynne, of Mars Hill; 2 sisters:  Louise Robinson of Asheville and Adelene Owenby of Weaverville; 4 brothers:  Sammy Higgins of Green Mountain, James Higgins of Burnsville, Tommy Higgins of Oklahoma and Buddy Higgins of Barnardsville; 5 grandchildren:  Donna and Shelly Laws, Stephen, Kandias and Tony Ayers; 4 great grandchildren:  Dakota and Dawson Laws and Olivia and Dalton Ayers.

 

Funeral services will be held at 2 P.M. Wednesday in North Bend Free Will Baptist Church.  Revs. Dean Murphy and Junior Peterson will officiate.  Burial will be in the Zion Baptist Church Cemetery

 

The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 P.M. Tuesday at Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home where the body will remain until taken to the church to lie in state 30 minutes prior to the service.

LEO JONES

Leo Jones, 84, of Burnsville, went home to be with the Lord Friday, February 25, 2011, at Mission Hospitals Memorial Campus.  A native of Illinois, he was a son of the late Donald and Caroline Trapp Jones, a World War II US Navy Veteran, and a retired Kroger store manager.  Leo had been a resident of Yancey County for the past 27 years.

Surviving are his wife of 44 years:  Shirley Pollock Jones; 2 daughters:  Caroll Wallis and husband, Gary, of Oregon, and Patti Gay of Norwalk, CA; a brother Bob Jones and wife Lorraine of California; 8 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren, 3 great-great grandchildren; a brother-in-law: Jack Wepler and wife Barb of Texas and, a nephew: Jeremy Wepler of Ilinois.

Funeral services will be held at 2:30 PM Thursday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Rev. Darryl Huskins will officiate.  Burial will be in the Academy Hill Cemetery.

The family will receive friends 1 hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

DR. MICHAEL THOMAS NORRIS

Dr. Michael T. Norris, 70, of the Cattail Creek Community, went to walk with the Lord Friday, February 25, 2011, at the Memorial Campus of Mission Hospitals.  A native of Ohio, he was a son of Paul Earhart Norris of St. Petersburg, FL and the late Anita Cotner Norris.  He graduated from The Citadel in 1962, and from the University of Louisville School of Dentistry.  Dr. Norris held private dental practices in the Cleveland, OH area and in St. Petersburg, FL.  He was a US Army Veteran and retired as Colonel from the US Army Reserve. He was activated for both Operation Desert Storm and Desert Shield.  Dr. Norris was president of the Cattail Creek Home Owner’s Association.

Surviving, in addition to his father, are his wife of 37 years:  Bonnie Hinton Norris; children:  Brian Mitchell and wife, Teresa Joy, of Franklin, TN, Jennifer Harrison of Taylor, MI, Stephen Mitchell of New York, NY, Paul Norris and wife, Heather, of Allen, TX and Heather Bowman and husband, Jeff, of Burnsville; 7 grandchildren:  Campbell, Liam, Jillian, Emerson, Haiden, Camden and Hailey; a sister:  Martha Bracewell and husband, Jerry, of Greenville, SC; and, his beloved boxer “Clark”.

A memorial service will be held at 2PM Tuesday in the Pensacola United Methodist Church.  Rev. A. J. Moore will officiate.

The family will receive friends 1 hour prior to the service at the church.

ROTHIE SILVERS

Rothie Silvers, 78, of Lickskillet Road, went home to be with the Lord Friday, February 25, 2011, in the McDowell Hospital.  A native of Yancey County he was a son of the late Carl and Etta Silvers.  He was the husband of Frances Briggs Silvers who died March 11, 2010.  He was also preceded in death by 2 sons:  David and Randy Silvers; a daughter:  Suzanne Boone; and, a granddaughter:  Jessica Silver.  Rothie was a US Army Veteran and a retired employee of the NC Department of Corrections.

Surviving are a son:  Michael Silvers and wife, Peggy, of Marion; 2 grandchildren; 4 great grandchildren; and, a sister:  Ruth McIntosh of Burnsville.

Funeral services will be held at 3PM Sunday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral home.  Burial will be in the Burton Cemetery at Bald Creek.

The family will receive friends 1 hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

TERESA PARKER

Teresa Parker, 91, of Burnsville, went to Heaven Wednesday, February 23, 2011, at Memorial Campus of Mission Hospitals.  A native of Guatemala, she had resided in the United States since 1945.

Surviving are her husband of 52 years:  Harley Parker; a daughter:  Alyce Sledge of Santa Monica, CA; and, a grandson:  Reggie Brison of Lakewood, CA.

Funeral services will be held at 7PM Monday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Revs. Shane Cassada and Kenneth Parker will officiate.  A graveside service will be held at 11AM Tuesday in the Cane River Baptist Church Cemetery.

The family will receive friends 1 hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

MARGARETTE COOK

Margarette Cook, 96, of Morganton, passed away Wednesday, February 23, 2011.  A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late George and Dominon Bolick Wilson.  She was also preceded in death by her husband: Ralph Cook; a son: Luther Cook; 2 daughters; Deborah Cook and Wilma Cook; great grandson:  Jeremy Cook and great-great grandson:  Chad Hughes.  She was a member of Bowditch Union Church.

 

Surviving are two daughters:  Grace Hughes and husband, Charles, of Morganton and Joyce Wheeling of Valdese; 4 sons:  James Cook and wife, Ruby, and Thurman Cook and wife, Anna, of Connellys Springs, Lloyd Cook of Marion and Roscoe Cook and wife, Iris, of Burnsville; 28 grandchildren, 56 great grandchildren and 46 great-great grandchildren also survive.

 

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Saturday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Revs. Gene McPeters and Leonard Lindsey will officiate.  Burial will be in the Robinson Cemetery on Halls Chapel Road.

 

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
