CARL JAMES SMITH

Carl James “Jimmie” Smith, 89, of Greenville, SC, went home to be with the Lord Tuesday, March 22, 2011, at Charles George VA Medical Center in Asheville.  A native of Jackson County, he was a son of the late Carl Murray and Lillie Galloway Smith.  He was also preceded in death by a grandson:  Andy Steele; and, a son-in-law:  Larry Robinson.  Jimmy was a World War II Navy Veteran, a Master Mason and Shriner and, a former owner of IMOCO Corporation in Hendersonville.

 

Surviving are his wife:  Mary Jo Brown Smith; daughters:  Pat Robinson and Jennifer Steele and husband, Carlyle, all of Greenville; and, 3 grandchildren:  Jacob and Matthew Robinson and Mary Kennington Steele.

 

Funeral services will be held at 2PM Friday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.

 

Burial will be in the George Brown Family Cemetery at West Burnsville.

 

The family will receive friends 1 hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

DAVID PHILLIPS

David Phillips, 49, of Burnsville, passed away Tuesday, March 22, 2011, at his home.  A native of Yancey County, he was the son of Kenneth and Joan Cramer Phillips of Burnsville.  A former employee of SMP Data of Swannanoa, David was an accomplished freelance photographer.  One of his interests was sports, including local schools, youth league, and Appalachian State University.  He was a member of Bolens Creek Baptist Church.  David was a very loving and caring person with a special interest in youth.

Surviving, in addition to his parents, are his wife of 18 years:  Kim Edwards Phillips; 2 daughters:  Brooke Phillips and Brittany Duncan of the home;  granddaughter:  Kirra; beloved pet:  Sammy; father and mother-in-law:  Ron and Lou Edwards; sister-in-law:  Angie Laws; a nephew:  Zachary; and, a niece:  Ciara Laws, all of Burnsville.

Funeral services will be held at 8PM Thursday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Dr. Chris Morgan and Revs. Gene King and Bud Edwards will officiate.  A graveside service will be held at 11AM Friday in the Phillips Family Cemetery on Hardscrabble Road.

The family will receive friends from 6 until 8PM prior to the service at the funeral home.

MILLER HONEYCUTT

Miller Honeycutt, 64, of Burnsville, went to be with the Lord, Monday, March 21, 2011 at his home.  A native of Yancey County, he was a son of the late Jack and Emma Lou Chrisawn Honeycutt.  He was also preceded in death by 5 brothers.

 

Surviving are his wife of 44 years:  Rita Whitson Honeycutt; 3 children:  Miller Raymond Honeycutt of Atlanta, GA, Nancy Davis of Morganton and Marvin Honeycutt of Burnsville; a step grandson:  Justin Davis; 4 brothers:  Ricky Honeycutt, Randy Honeycutt, Jackie Honeycutt and Dean Honeycutt and a sister:  Karen Gilbert.

 

A graveside service will be held at 3:00 PM Tuesday in the Academy Hill Cemetery.  Revs. Dwight Boone, Jr. and Hasket Honeycutt, Jr. will officiate.

 

The family will receive friends from 5 until 7 PM Tuesday at Faith Baptist Church.

ANNIE PATE

Annie Pate, 86, of Green Mountain went to be with the Lord, Sunday, March 20, 2011 at Brookside Rehabilitation and Care.  A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late Garfield and Kettie Evans Pate.  She was also preceded in death by brothers:  James and Wayne Pate; and 3 sisters:  Ruth Fox, Connie Grant and Ruby Bennett.

 

Surviving are several nieces and nephews.

 

Funeral services will be held at 7:00 PM Tuesday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers funeral Home.  Rev. Philip Garland will officiate.  A graveside service will be held at 10:00 AM Wednesday in the Bennett Cemetery at Poplar.

 

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

NELL BANKS HENSLEY

 Nell Banks Hensley, 94, of Burnsville, passed away Saturday, March 19, 2011 at Brookside Rehabilitation and Care.  A native of Yancey County, she was born January 31, 1917 to the late Plato Marion and Mary L. Young Banks and was the wife of the late Kenneth ‘Spot’ Hensley.  Nell was also preceded in death by brothers; Esby and Wesley Banks and sisters; Grace Dellinger, Clara Briggs, Helen England and Mary Martha Davis; and a granddaughter: Mary Ann Nelson.

 

Surviving are her daughter: Mary Nelson and husband John and her son: Douglas Hensley and wife Arleen of Burnsville, her granddaughter: Lynn Nelson and husband Joey Lindsay of Morganton, a step great grandson: Lucas; sisters: Frances Taylor, Margaret Griffith and Ruth Peake all of Burnsville, her brother: Drate Banks of Reston, VA and, many nieces and nephews.

 

A memorial service will be held at 11 AM Saturday, March 26, 2011 in Micaville Presbyterian Church, of which she was a member.  The family will greet friends immediately following the memorial service at the church.

DUFFIE CHANDLER

Duffie Chandler, 94, of Mars Hill, passed on Friday, March 18, 2011, at Brookside Rehabilitation and Care with family in attendance.  A native of Madison County, she was a daughter of the late D. R. and Bessie Crowder Fox, and the wife of Ralph Chandler, who passed on in 1987.  She was also preceded in death by brothers:  Wayne, Wade and Ray Fox.

 

Surviving are a daughter:  Dorlas Chandler of the home; a son:  Ron Chandler and wife, Beverly; grandchildren:  Jeremy Chandler and wife, Kay, Jon Chandler and wife, Rachel, and Leah Davidson and husband, Matthew; and, great grandchildren:  Corey, Nicholas, Ciera, Jon Lewis and Kadence (Kady Bug) all of Burnsville.

 

Funeral services will be held at 7 PM Monday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Rev. Maggie Lauterer will officiate.  A graveside service will be held at 10 AM Tuesday in the Bethel Baptist Church Cemetery. 

The family will receive friends from 5:30 until 7 PM Monday prior to the service at the funeral home.

BERNICE 'JAP' SILVERS

Bernice (Jap) Silvers, 70, of Cane River, went home to be with the Lord Tuesday, March 15, 2011 at Mission Hospitals St. Joseph Campus following a short illness.  A native of Yancey County, he was a son of the late Bradley and Annie Silvers.  He was also preceded in death by his brothers:  Keith, Mitch and Gerald and a sister:  Carline. 

 

Surviving are his wife:  Maxine; 7 sisters:  Veo Hensley (Charlie), Dealie Morrow, Clar Bell Wheeler, Shirley Slaninko, Wonell Martin (John), Pauline Clay (Dick) and Evann Wilber (Jim); 2 brothers:  Weroupe and Earnest Silvers; a special cousin:  Morris Silvers; special friend:  Carton Higgins; special nephew:  Sam Silvers; several nieces and nephews and a host of friends.

 

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Saturday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Revs. Marvin Silvers and Tommy Murphy will officiate.  Burial will be in the Carl Higgins Cemetery at Higgins.

 

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

EARLENE PHILLIPS RAMSEY

Earlene Phillips Ramsey, 77, of Fletcher, passed away Tuesday, March 15, 2011 at The Elizabeth House in Flat Rock.  A native of Yancey County, she was the daughter of the late Odell and Bernice Laws Phillips and the wife of Bruce Ramsey who was laid to rest in 1974.  She was also preceded in death by her son, Bruce “Buzzy” Ramsey and daughter, Marcia Allison, brothers:  Harold Phillips and Emmett Phillips and sisters:  Madelyn Bryant, Nell Edwards and Carolyn Silvers.  Earlene was a member of Arden Missionary Baptist Church.

 

Surviving are her children:  Debra Ramsey of the home, Sharon Kast and husband, Thomas, David Ramsey, Mike Ramsey, Cathy Creasman and Shelly Connor and husband, Greg; and sister: Audrey Phillips.  She was grandmother of 10 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.

 

Funeral services will be held at 7:30 PM Thursday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Rev. David MacEchern will officiate.  A graveside service will be held at 11 AM Friday in the Watts Cemetery on Lotties Creek.

 

The family will receive friends from 6 until 7:30 PM prior to the funeral service at the funeral home.

JUNIOR COOPER

Junior Cooper, 59, of the Fox Creek community, went home to be with the Lord Tuesday, March 8, 2011, at his home.  A native of Yancey County, he was a son of the late Dock and Cara Thomas Cooper.  He was also preceded in death by a brother:  Gene Thomas.  Junior had been associated with Buckner Construction Company for the past 32 years.  He attended Mount Pleasant Baptist Church.

Surviving are his wife of 33 years:  Debra Ponder Cooper; 2 sons:  Shannon Cooper and wife, Kedren, and Brandon Cooper and fiancée, Christy Murphy; a very special grandson:  Easton Cooper; 2 sisters:  Shirley Bailey and husband, Clay, and Judy Wheeler and husband, Daniel, all of Burnsville; a brother:  Gary Cooper and wife, Wanda, of Green Mountain; and, a special friend who was more like a brother:  Randy Buckner.

Funeral services will be held at 8PM Friday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  The Revs. Jerry Shelton, Tommy Murphy and Denny Wilson will officiate.  A graveside service will be held at 11AM Saturday in the Fox Creek Cemetery with co-workers from Buckner Construction serving as pallbearers.

The family will receive friends from 5 until 8PM Friday at the funeral home.

LUCILLE H. BANKS

Lucille H. "Momma Cille" Banks, 79, of Bald Creek went home to be with the Lord, Monday, March 7, 2011 at her home.  A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late Dewey and Laura Burton Hensley and the wife of Arlen Banks of Barnardsville who died in 1967.  She was also preceded in death by a sister:  Mary Ann Hall; grandchildren:  David Kenneth Hall and Pamella Arlene Hall.  Lucille was a former employee of A B Emblem, a seamstress and an avid gardener and horticulturist.

 

Surviving are her children:  Thurman Banks of the home, Arlene Staley and husband, Mike, of North Wilkesboro and Keith Banks and wife, Christal, of Bald Creek; special friend:  Orscar Patla of Bald Creek; 4 grandsons:  Arlen Banks and wife, Misty, of Micaville, Shane Banks and wife, Crystal, of Bald Creek, Johnny Hall of Charlotte and Michael Hall and wife, Amy, of New York; 5 great grandchildren:  Chloe, Toby, Keenan, Kaylyn and Carson Banks.

 

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Saturday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Rev. Arlen Banks will officiate.  Burial will be in the Cane River Cemetery.

 

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
