IMA JEAN BOWLIN

Ima Jean Higgins Bowlin, 70, of Elizabethton, TN, went home to be with the Lord Monday, January 30, 2012 in the Johnson City Medical Center.  A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late Vince and Pearl McIntosh Higgins and the wife of Norman Bowlin who died in 2002.  She was also preceded in death by a sister:  Pauline Allen and a brother:  Clayborn Higgins.  Ima Jean was an employee of Hickory Springs Manufacturing with 29 years of service.  She was of the Baptist faith.

 

Surviving are 4 daughters:  Brenda Arrowood and husband, Eddie, of Elizabethton, Remona Noah and husband, Richard, of Thomasville, NC, Pam Lackey and husband, David, of Wilkesboro, NC and Teresa McManus and husband, Ernie, of Purlear, NC; 6 grandchildren:  Shane Noah, Kristi Wolfe, Joel Church, Brandon Arrowood, Misty Transeau and Keisha McManus; 5 great grandchildren:  Kiarah Shaw, Gavin Wolfe, Alex Noah, Isaac Norris, Lorelai Transeau; a sister:  Kathleen Rathburn of Burnsville and several nieces and nephews also survive.

 

Funeral services will be held at 8 PM Wednesday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Rev. Danny Cook will officiate.  A graveside service will be held at 11 AM Thursday in the Eddie McMahan Cemetery.

 

The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 PM prior to the service at the funeral home.

GLADYS GARLAND

Gladys Thomas Garland, 91, of the Brush Creek Community, went home to be with the Lord, Saturday, January 28, 2012 at Mountain Manor Assisted Living.  A native of Yancey County she was a daughter of the late Dewey and Pearl Hall Thomas.  She was the wife of Howard Garland who died in 2003.  She was preceded in death by a sister, Madge Hopson.  A retired employee of Burnsville Hosiery Mill with 53 years of service, Gladys early employment was as Rosie the Riveter in the ship yards in Wilmington, Delaware during the WWII effort.  She was a member of West Burnsville Baptist Church.

 

Surviving are a son:  Jerry Garland and wife, Patti, of Green Mountain; a daughter:  Sandy Smith and husband, Dee, of Asheville; 4 grandchildren:  Bart Garland (Delores), Paige Carpenter (Ty), Lana Melton (Mark) and Summer Smith (Clark Duncan); 5 great grandchildren:  Maddison, Emmaline, Sam, Meredith and Josh; 2 sisters:  June Robinson of Green Mountain and Maxine Turbyfill of Burnsville; 3 brothers:  Gene Thomas of Old Fort, Dean Thomas of Taylors, SC and Marvin Thomas of Green Mountain; several nieces and nephews also survive.

 

Funeral Services will be held at 2 PM Monday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Rev. Charlie Carroway will officiate.  Burial will be in the Double Island Baptist Church Cemetery. 

 

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.

MARY ANN CURTIS

Mary Ann Curtis, 78, of Burnsville, went home to be with the Lord Friday, January 20, 2012, at her home.  A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late Zeb and Hattie Proffitt Randolph.  She was also preceded in death by 2 brothers:  Harold and Emmit Randolph; and, a granddaughter:  Misty Curtis.  Mary Ann was a member of Elk Shoal Baptist Church and loved God, her family and her church.

 

Surviving are her husband of 53 years:  Joe Curtis; 2 sons:  Gene Curtis and wife, Helen, and Dale Curtis and fiancée, Angela Silvers, all of Burnsville; a brother:  Morris Randolph of Waterford, CT; 2 grandchildren:  Jennie Whitson and husband, Kenny, and Jessie Curtis; and, 2 great grandchildren:  Bentley Curtis and Callie Whitson.

 

Funeral services will be held at 3PM Sunday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Rev. Stacey Elkins will officiate.  Burial will be in the McIntosh Cemetery on Langford Branch.

 

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

T. J. PETERSON

T. J. Peterson, 85, of the Green Mountain Community, passed away, Wednesday, January 18, 2012 at Brookside Rehabilitation and Care.  A native of Yancey County, he was a son of the late Loss and Carrie Buchanan Peterson and the husband of Faye Stewart Peterson, who died in 2010.  He was also preceded in death by sisters:  Pauline Johnson and Nadine Peterson and an infant sister and brother:  Mary and Paul Peterson.  He was a WWII Army Veteran serving in Germany and Austria and later served in the US Air Force.  He was a life-time member of the DAV and Charter Member of the Sgt. E. L. Randolph Chapter 57 DAV.  T. J. spent many hours as a volunteer helping disabled American Veterans by driving the van to the Asheville VA Medical Center.

 

Surviving are his daughters:  Martha Peterson and Elaine Byrd and husband, Jerry, of Burnsville and Ann Ruetschle and husband, Jim, of Durango, Co; 5 grandsons and 2 great grandchildren.

 

Funeral services will be held at 2 PM Friday in North Bend Free Will Baptist Church of which he was a member.  Revs. Dean Murphy, Roger Laws and Norman Lovelace will officiate.  Burial will be in the Fairview Cemetery at Horton Hill with military graverites conducted by Sgt. E. L. Randolph Chapter 57 DAV.

 

The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 PM Thursday at Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home where the body will remain until the funeral hour.

MILDRED FOX McINTOSH

Mildred Fox McIntosh, of the Bee Log Community went home to be with the Lord Sunday, January 15, 2012 at the St. Joseph Campus of Mission Hospitals.  A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late Arcemus and Lillie Banks Fox.  She was also preceded in death by sisters:  Grace Ball Riddle and Annie Hensley; and brothers:  Charles, Roy, Roscoe and Coy Fox.  Mildred was a retired employee of the Yancey County school system with more than 30 years of service.  She was a former member of the Yancey County School Board.

 

Surviving are her husband of 65 years, Bruce McIntosh; daughter:  Brenda Smith and husband, Don, of Burnsville; granddaughter:  Melissa Hoilman and husband, Ryan; 4 great grandsons, whom she adored:  Ashton, Bryson, Dalton and Colby Hoilman; a brother:  Earl Fox of Baltimore, MD, and godson:  Samuel Gerard Ball, II.

 

Funeral services will be held at 3 PM Tuesday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Rev. Royce Ball will officiate.  Burial will be in the Holcombe Cemetery.

 

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

MURIEL WALL COOPER

Muriel Wall Cooper, 96, of Burnsville, died  Friday, January 13, 2012 at Brookside Rehabilitation and Care.  A native of Rutherford County, she was the daughter of the late Goyen O. and Etta Proctor Wall.  Other than her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband, John Hubert (Coop) Cooper who died in 1998, a sister, Hilda and brothers:  Hack and Mal Wall.

 

She is survived by three daughters:  Ann Cooper Hall of Johnson City, TN, Barbara Jean Cooper Newton of Asheville and Betty Cooper Hirt and husband, David, of Stone Mountain, GA and special friend, Jan Sparks of Burnsville.  Her legacy and her pride and joy were her surviving eight grandchildren, nine great grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren.  She loved and was loved by several nieces and nephews.

 

A celebration of life service will be held at 11:00 AM Friday, January 20, 2012 at Higgins Memorial United Methodist Church where Muriel had been a member for more that sixty years.  Pastor Wes Sharpe will officiate.   A reception will immediately follow the service in the Family Life Center at the church.

 

Private family burial will be in the Academy Hill Cemetery.

 

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to Hospice of Yancey County, 856 Georges Fork Road, Burnsville, NC 28714.

BOYD AYERS

Boyd Ayers, 66, of Green Mountain, went home to be with the Lord Monday, January 9, 2012, at his home.  A native of Yancey County, he was a son of the late Crawford and Lou Mae Bailey Ayers.  He was also preceded in death by a sister:  Tilda Bennett; and, brothers:  Vernal, Hobert, Ott, Jerry and Jack Ayers.  Boyd was a member of Covy Rock Free Will Baptist Church.

 

Surviving are his wife of 30 years:  Linda Ayers; a daughter:  Missy Austin and husband, Kenny, and a son:  Michael Boyd Ayers and fiancée, Heather Callahan, all of Green Mountain; grandchildren:  Tyler, Megan, Ty, Kash and Zachery; 3 sisters:  Marie Laws of Green Mountain, Mary Lee Masters of Erwin, TN, and Betty Stump of Burnsville; and, 2 brothers:  Tom Ayers of Green Mountain and Floyd Ayers of Bakersville.

 

Funeral services will be held at 2PM Thursday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.   Burial will be in the Will Hughes Cemetery.

 

The family will receive friends from 6 until 8PM Wednesday at the funeral home.

SUSIE BALL

 

Susie Ball, 37, of Piney Hill, passed away unexpectedly Saturday, January 7, 2012, at Mission Hospitals Memorial Campus.  A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of Stergial Hensley of Burnsville and the late Judy Murphy Hensley.  She was an employee of Baxter Health Care.

 

Surviving, in addition to her father, is her husband of 15 years:  Willie Ball; sisters:  Julie Kuykendall and husband, Jeremy, of Old Fort, and Tonya Wingo and husband, Jimmy, of Asheville; a brother:  David Hensley of Burnsville; maternal grandmother:  Helen Murphy of Micaville; and, a nephew:  Grayson Kuykendall.

 

Funeral services will be held at 8PM Tuesday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Rev. Steve Robinson will officiate.  A graveside service will be held at 10AM Wednesday in the Ben Ball Family Cemetery on Banks Creek.

 

The family will receive friends from 6 until 8PM prior to the service at the funeral home.

BENNIE DEAN MANEY

Bennie Dean Maney, 59, of Prices Creek, passed away Saturday, January 7, 2012, at his home.  A native of Yancey County, he was a son of the late Kenneth and June Hughes Maney.

 

Surviving are his wife:  Marilyn Elkins Maney; a sister:  Deborah Crain of Burnsville; and, brothers:  Steven Maney of Vicaville, CA and Eddie and Ricky Maney of Burnsville.

 

Funeral services will be held at 11AM Tuesday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Revs. Philip Garland and Stacey Elkins will officiate.  Burial will be in Academy Cemetery.

 

The family will receive friends 1 hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

JAY BLACK

Jay Black, 60, of Bakers Creek, went home to be with the Lord Friday, January 6, 2012, at his home.  A native of Yancey County, he was a son of the late Frank and Juanita Black.  Jay retired from the N. C. Department of Corrections after 30 years of service, was a member of West Yancey Volunteer Fire Department for 20 years,  and a member and Past Master of Burnsville Lodge #717 A.F. & A.M.

 

Surviving are his wife of 41 years:  Becky Hughes Black; a son:  Michael Black and wife, Mary Beth; 2 grandsons:  Avery and Ryan Black, all of Burnsville; 3 sisters:  Shirley Jean Carroll and Mildred Elkins of Marion and Geneva Pate of Crossnore.

 

A graveside service will be held at 3PM Monday in the Elmer Byrd Family Cemetery on Bakers Creek.  Rev. Dick Westbrook will officiate.

 

The family will receive friends from 1 until 2:30 PM prior to the service at Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.
