DAN SILVER

Dan Silver, 90, of Gillespie Road, passed away Wednesday, April 11, 2012 at Spruce Pine Brian Center.  A native of Yancey County, he was a son of the late Shelby and Martha Silver.  He was also preceded in death by 3 sisters:  Carrie Hess, Callie Gortney and Evie Wilson, and a brother:  Dee Silver.  Dan was a World War II Army Veteran and a retired farmer.

 

Surviving are a daughter:  Brenda Boone and husband, Phillip, of Woodstock, GA; 2 sons:  Larry Silver and wife, Phyllis, of Burnsville and Clinton Silver and wife, Vickie, of McDonough, GA; 2 sisters:  Eva McCurry of Marion and Barbara Fox of Burnsville; 2 brothers:  David Silver of Marion and Gale Silver of Burnsville; 4 grandchildren:  Jonathan, Laura, Felisha, and Teresa; 13 great grandchildren and a great-great grandson.

 

Funeral services will be held at 8 PM Friday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Revs. Dale Banks and Jackie Silver will officiate.  A graveside service will be held at 10 AM Saturday in the Spring Branch Cemetery on Gillespie Road.

 

The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 PM Friday prior to the service at the funeral home.

WINTZ McINTOSH

C. Wintz McIntosh, 93, of Hardscrabble Road, went home to be with the Lord Tuesday, April 10, 2012, at his home.  A native of Yancey County, he was a son of the late Zeb and Ruth King McIntosh.  He was also preceded in death by a sister:  Enid McIntosh; and, brothers:  Jack, Clay and Frank McIntosh.  Wintz was a World War II Army Veteran, retired farmer, and  active in the Democratic Party.

 

Surviving are his wife of 70 years:  Eloise Stines McIntosh; a daughter:  Susan Ball and husband, Niles; a granddaughter:  Emily Hudgins and husband, James; a great grandson:  Dalton, all of Burnsville; and, several nieces and nephews.

 

Funeral services will be held at 3PM Thursday in the Bald Creek United Methodist Church, of which he was a member.  Rev. A. J. Moore will officiate.  Burial will be in Proffitt Cemetery on Hardscrabble Road.

 

The family will receive friends from 1 until 3PM Thursday at the church prior to the service.

JEAN HOLCOMBE WARREN

Jean Holcombe Warren, 63, of Kernersville, passed away peacefully Monday, April 9, 2012 surrounded by her family.  A native of Burnsville, she was the daughter of the late Harlon and Alma Robinson Holcombe.  She was a graduate of High Point College and had worked at Young’s Florist in Kernersville for a number of years.  Jean attended Pine Grove United Methodist Church.

 

Surviving are her husband of 42 years: Michael ‘Mike’ Warren of the home, a daughter; Allison Warren of Kernersville; a son: Andy Warren and wife Jenny of Clemmons; grandchildren: Xander and Samantha; a sister: Patti West and husband Gary of Statesville; special cousins Myra Hensley and husband Charlie and Jerry Holcombe of Burnsville; several nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family and friends.

 

 Funeral services will be held at 1 P. M. Friday in the Chapel of Pierce-Jefferson Funeral Home in Kernersville.  Dr. Gary West will officiate. Burial will be in Mt. Gar Cemetery.  The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

BETTY JO BRINKLEY ROBINSON

Betty Jo Brinkley Robinson, 77, of Bill Allen Branch passed away Thursday, April 5, 2012 at her home.  A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late Hulon and Bertha Wright Brinkley.  She was the wife of Tommy Robinson who died in 2005.  She was also preceded in death by 3 sisters:  Marie Ball, Dorothy Brinkley Robertson and Ruby Wilson; 4 brothers:   Clyde Brinkley, Jack Brinkley, Joe Brinkley and Reece Brinkley; and a son-in-law:  Danny Boone.  Betty was a retired kindergarten teacher with the Yancey County Schools.

 

Surviving are 4 daughters:  Belinda Woody and husband, Mike W. Woody, of Micaville, Rhonda Boone and fiancé, Billy Buckner, Kristi Robinson Bailey and husband, Walter, of Burnsville, Leigh Ann Pauley and husband, Jeff, of Micaville; grandchildren:  Justin Boone, Brinkley Woody Fox, McKenzie Pauley, Brianna Woody and Abbey Bailey.

 

Memorial services will be held at 4 PM Saturday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Burial will be in the Honeycutt-Price Cemetery.

 

The family will receive friends from 2 until 4 PM Saturday prior to the service at the funeral home.

LARRY PARKER, Jr.

Larry Parker, Jr., 59, of Burnsville, passed away Wednesday, April 4, 2012.  A native of Charlotte, he was a son of Betty Treadway Parker of Burnsville and the late Larry Parker, Sr.

 

Surviving, in addition to his mother, are sisters:  Teresa Parker of Hickory and Kelly Parker-Carter of Conover; and brothers:  Greg Parker of Charlotte and Barry Parker of York, SC.

 

A graveside service will be held at 3 PM Monday in Sunset Memory Gardens in Charlotte.  Rev. Michael Canady will officiate.

EARL D. McNEILL

Earl D. McNeill, 87, of Largo, Florida, passed away Thursday, March 29, 2012 in Seminole, Florida.  A native of Yancey County, he was a son of the late Bud and Mary Sowers McNeill.  He was a retired demolition expert and former partner in McNeill Furniture Company in Largo. 

 

Surviving is a daughter: Patricia McNeill Harwood and husband Ross of Gibsonville, a sister: Mae Buchanan and husband A. D. of Spruce Pine, 3 grandchildren; 6 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

 

Funeral services will be held at 2 P. M. Monday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Rev. Greg Hollifield will officiate.  Burial will be in the Fairview Cemetery on Seven Mile Ridge.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

KATE SPARKS WOODY

Kate Sparks Woody, 86, of Newdale, passed away Tuesday, March 27, 2012, at Blue Ridge Regional Hospital in Spruce Pine.  A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late Wash and Bell Greene Gurley, and the wife of the late Howard Sparks.  She was also preceded in death by 4 sisters.  Kate was a member of Crabtree Baptist Church.

 

Surviving are her children:  Kathy Wells and husband, Robert, of Hickory, Brown Sparks and wife, Mary Ann, of Waynesville, Juanita Sergent of Baltimore, MD, Gail Bennett and husband, Harold, of Boone, Linda Queen and husband, Jerry, of Asheville, and Joe Sparks and wife, Angela, of Marion; 5 grandchildren; 7 great grandchildren; a sister:  Georgia Hollifield of Burnsville; a brother:  Richard Gurley of Tennessee; and, several nieces and nephews.

 

Funeral services will be held at 11AM Thursday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Rev. Harold Bennett, Jr. and Todd Bennett will officiate.  Burial will be in the Will Young Cemetery.

 

The family will receive friends 1 hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

PANSY AVELINE CROWDER

Pansy Aveline Crowder, 103, of Burnsville, passed away Monday, March 26, 2012 at Madison Health and Rehabilitation.  She was the daughter of the late Sally Chandler.  Mrs. Crowder was a member of the Ivy Gap Baptist Church.

 

Surviving is her son:  Ken Crowder and wife, Judy, of Marshall; a grandson:  Ryan Crowder and wife, Rachel, and a great granddaughter:  Olivia of Mars Hill; and numerous cousins.

 

Funeral services will be held at 3:00 PM Friday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Rev. Dale Banks will officiate.  Burial will be in the Chandler Cemetery at Ivy Gap.

 

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

 

The family would like to thank the nurses and staff at Madison Health and Rehabilitation for their excellent care given to Mrs. Crowder. 

ELSIE MILDRED MILLER

Elsie Mildred Miller, 88, of Green Mountain went home to be with the Lord, Monday, March 26, 2012 in the John F. Keever, Jr. Solace Center in Asheville.  A native of Greene County, TN, she was the daughter of the late Michael and Ola Jones Crum and the wife of Bernie Miller who passed away in 1992.  She was also preceded in death by an infant daughter, Betty Jean; a brother, Cliff Crum; and 2 sisters, Irene Lunsford and Roberta Breeding.  Elsie was a member of Covey Rock Free Will Baptist Church for over 50 years.  She loved her Lord, her family, friends and her flowers.  She was a beloved Mother, Grandmother and Great-Grandmother. 

 

Surviving are 4 sons:  Lester and wife, Elaine, of Burnsville, Tommy and wife, Evelyn, of Fort Union, VA, Jerry and wife, Nina, and Larry and wife, Barbara, of Green Mountain; 10 grandchildren:  Sherrie, Connie, Kristy, Chris, Latasha, Jake, Timmy, Maria, Michael and Ronnie; 13 great grandchildren:  Carrie, Logan, Griffin, Amy, Kelly, Matthew, Josh, Melaney, Scott, Riley, Blake, Gary and Skyler; and a sister:  Anna Mae Oliver of Johnson City, TN.

 

Funeral services will be held at 8:00 PM Thursday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Rev. Randy Laws will officiate.  A graveside service will be held at 11:00 AM Friday in Union Hill Church Cemetery at Tipton Hill.

 

The family will receive friends from 6 until 8:00 PM Thursday prior to the service at the funeral home, and at other times, will be at her home.

CHARLES SHERRELL CROWDER

Charles Sherrell Crowder, 64, of the Cane River Community, went home to be with his Lord, Saturday, March 24, 2012 at his home after a long courageous battle with heart disease.  A native of Yancey County, he was a son of the late Charles W. and Doris Johnson Crowder.  He was also preceded in death by his twin sister, Virginia Murrell Hughes; niece, Morgan Hudgins, and his faithful companion of 15 years, Patrick.  A US Air Force Vietnam Veteran, he was an operator of all types of heavy equipment, but spent many years as an independent trucker known as Garfield. 

 

Surviving are his wife of 43 years:  Ida Jane Maney Crowder; a son: Charles Garrett “Chuck” Crowder of Burnsville; niece and daughter of his heart:  Debbie McKinney of Burnsville; sister and brother-in-law:  Patricia and Doug Weatherman of Lewisville, NC; sister-in-law:  Marie Nicholson and husband, Mike; brother-in-law:  Robert Hughes; nieces and nephews:  Robbie, Pam, Ernie and Angie; 10 grand nieces and nephews and a great grand nephew. 

 

Funeral services will be held at 2 PM Monday in the Cane River Baptist Church of which he was a member.  Rev. Shane Cassida will officiate.  Burial will be in the Gilbert Wilson Cemetery. 

 

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.

 

Memorials may be made to the Una and Burl Maney Scholarship Fund, Care of Cane River Baptist Church.
