DAVID GREENE

David D. Greene, 71, of Spruce Pine, passed on Saturday, June 11, 2016, at his home. A native of Mitchell County, he was a son of the late Elmer and Lucille Grindstaff Greene.  A US Air Force Veteran, he retired with the US Postal Service and prior to that he was employed by Air Preheater.  David was very involved in Masonry, a Past Master of Vesper Lodge #554 AF & AM in Spruce Pine, where he was the historian and compiled and printed the history of Vesper Lodge.  He had served as District Deputy Grand Master of both the 41st and 37th Masonic Districts.  A Scottish Rite and York Rite Mason, he was a member of Oasis Shrine Temple, and Past President of Mountaineer Shrine Club, where he was presently the secretary.  He was also a member of Spruce Pine Volunteer Fire and Rescue for 32 years, where he had been Secretary and Treasurer.

 

Surviving are his wife:  Kathy Young Greene; a son:  Daniel Greene (Victoria) of Johnson City, TN; a daughter:  Kristen Hall of Connelly Springs; 3 grandsons:  David C. Greene of Spruce Pine, Justin A. Hall of Old Fort and Luke T. Hall of Marion; 4 great grandchildren; and, his sister:  Noma Greene of Bakersville.

 

Funeral services will be held at 4PM Monday in Spruce Pine United Methodist Church.  Revs. Alvin Carpenter and Jeremy Troxler will officiate.  Burial will be in the Spruce Pine Cemetery. Masonic rites will be conferred by Vesper Lodge #554 AF & AM, at the church.

 

The family will receive friends from 2 until 4PM Monday, prior to the service at the church.

LUCILLE PETERSON

Lucille Peterson, 94, of Green Mountain, went home to be with the Lord Tuesday, June 7, 2016, at Smoky Ridge Health and Rehabilitation.  A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late Neal and Maggie Styles Elliott, and the wife of Ike Peterson who died in 1992.  She was also preceded in death by a daughter: Peggy Peterson; sons: Wayne and Blaine Peterson; 3 sisters; and, 2 brothers.  Lucille was a member of South Bend Free Will Baptist Church.

Surviving are 2 daughters: Frances Wilcox and husband, David, of Burnsville and Elaine Brewer of Marion:  4 sons:  Donald Peterson and wife, Clarise, of Thomasville, Carmon Peterson of Archdale, Edward Peterson and wife, Kathy, of Green Mountain and Steve Peterson and wife, Sherri, of Burnsville; 16 grandchildren; 31 great grandchildren; and, 3 great-great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 8 PM Thursday, June 9, in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  William Ellis will officiate. A graveside service will be held at 11:00 AM Friday in the Peterson Hill Cemetery.  The family will receive friends 6:00 until 8:00PM Thursday, prior to the service at the funeral home.

LILA EMMA INKPEN

Lila Emma Inkpen, 101, of Burnsville, graduated to be with the Lord on December 9, 2015.  She shared her delightful presence with her two daughters, one in Goldsboro and one in Burnsville.

 

Lila was wed to Ernest Paul Inkpen and Raymond Douglas Inkpen, both deceased.  She is survived and remembered by scores of family and friends.  She was a member of Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church here in Burnsville and Grace Baptist Church in Goldsboro.  Her two daughters (Jane Howard of Goldsboro and Nany Rutkowski of Burnsville) and her son Dr. Thomas Inkpen of Albany, NY treasure her life and example in the Lord.  Her grandchildren are:  Teri Howard (Goldsboro), Debbie Reese (Hawaii), James Howard (Florence, SC) Nathanael Bengtson (Johnstown, PA), David Inkpen (Pascohe, RI) and Mary Lou Leanard (Rockford, MI).  She has worn out many Bibles in her lifetime and enjoyed teaching the Bible and working part-time as a church secretary during retirement.  She graduated from Brown’s Business School in Queens and worked for many years as a Social Secretary for the state hospitals in New York.  She is also survived by eight great grandchildren and one great, great grandchild who dearly treasure her living example of a Christ-like life.  We all enjoyed her frequent cheery letters, notes of encouragement and interesting articles she composed over her lifetime.  Lila won several awards for her beautiful scenic oil paintings kept by the family that amaze visitors viewing her God-given talent.

 

A celebration of her life will be held at 2 PM Saturday, June 11, 2016 in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.

TAMMY KAY STARK

Tammy Kay Stark,  54, went home to be with her Lord on Monday, May 9, 2016, at her home in Hunter’s Run Apartments.  She was a dedicated member of Young’s Chapel Freewill Baptist Church, where she served as an assistant Sunday School teacher and worked with the Women’s group on many fundraising projects  and other activities.

 

Surviving are immediate and extended loving family members, along with many friends who also loved her dearly.

 

Tammy was a co-founder of the Happy Kids Committee, an organization that raises money to provide playground equipment to Domestic Violence Shelters.  She gave of her time and talents in many charitable causes.

 

A memorial service will be held at 1:00 P. M. Saturday, June 4, 2016, at Young’s Chapel Freewill Baptist Church.  Reverends Roger Thompson and Phillip Hughes will officiate. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

DONNA LILLIAN THOMAS GARDNER

Donna Lillian Thomas Gardner, 83, of Erwin, went home to be with her Lord and Savior, Thursday, May 26, 2016 at the Johnson City Medical Center.  A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late Claude and Ruby Thomas.  Donna was a member of Ninth Street Baptist Church in Erwin.  She was a retired employee of the Unicoi County School system.  After retirement she was a bookkeeper with Erwin Specialty Company,  a caregiver for the elderly and also worked summers with Jones and Church farms.   Donna was full of life, always going “wide open”.   Her passion for life was her granddaughter, Sara , and her great-grandson, Peyton.  She was an avid sports fan.  Donna was preceded in death by her husband Tommy Gardner and thereafter, her long time companion Phillip Bennett , a brother Walker Thomas and a niece Sabra McMahan.

Surviving are her son, David Gardner and fiancé Sandy Hodges of Erwin, Grandson: Sean Gardner of Erwin, Granddaughter Sara Trussell and fiancé Chris McKee of North Las Vegas, NV.  A brother: Tommy Thomas of Spruce Pine, Sister Sharon Deyton and husband Johnny of Burnsville.  Companion Wade Couch of Erwin and several nieces and nephews, who referred to her as Momma Donna.  And special friends Angie Boone, Diane and Bud Banks.

Memorial services will be held  at 2 P.M. Saturday June 4, 2016 in the Chapel of Valley Funeral Home in Erwin.  The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.

DAISY BELLE McCURRY

Daisy Belle Lockner McCurry, 98, of Green Mountain, went home to be with the Lord Tuesday, May 31, 2016, at her home.  A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late Bill and Suckie Peterson Lockner, and the wife of Voyd McCurry, who died Feb. 11, 1982.  She was also preceded in death by a  daughter: Anna Lou McCurry; son: Cecil McCurry; two infant sons; 2 daughters-in-law:  Ann and Robin McCurry; son-in-law: Herbert Hopson; and a sister: Lola Peterson.

Surviving are three sons: Craig McCurry of Asheville, James McCurry and Kenneth McCurry and wife, Deborah; two daughters: Judy Barnett and husband, Owen, and Linda Hopson; daughter-in-law: Nora McCurry, all of Green Mountain; 15 grandchildren: Kevin (Michele) Hopson, Susie (Jackie) Shelton, Gary Hopson, Jennifer Barnett, Becky McCurry, Julia (Clint) Higgins, Shea (Brandon) Laws, Britt (Lisa) McCurry, Jamie (Brandon) Price, Marc McCurry, Megan (Karl) Green, Benny (Tiffany) McCurry, Karen (Phillip) Morris, Brittney and Allison; and 18 great grandchildren: Sara and Jacob McCurry, Justus and Jesse Shelton, Logan McCurry, Hayden and Hannah Price, Levi Higgins, Eli and Savannah Laws, Joshua, Matthew and Benjamin Morris, Aidan and Patrick Greene, Annabelle Hopson, Sidney and Sara Beth Alexander.

Funeral services will be held at 8PM Thursday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Rev. Phillip Hughes will officiate.  A graveside service will be held at 11AM Friday in Peterson Hill Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 6 until 8PM Thursday prior to the service at the funeral home, and at other times will be at her home.

 

JAMES 'RICHARD' BIGGS

James “Richard” Biggs, 62, of Dahlonega, GA, formerly of Burnsville, passed away on Tuesday, May 31, 2016.  A native of Yancey County, he was a son of the late Lenard and Madge Elkins Biggs.  He was also preceded in death by several brothers and sisters.

 

Richard had a passion for music and friends.  He loved to entertain with his music, but most of all he had an unconditional love for his family, children, and God.

 

Surviving are his former wife and friend:  Martha Flanagan Bower of Dahlonega, GA; a son:  Chris Biggs of Hickory; daughters and sons-in-law:  Kimberly Biggs and David Wallace of Dahlonega, GA, Ashley Biggs and Chris Stephenson of Dawsonville, GA, and Candice and Justin Newell of Murrayville, GA; brothers:  J. D. Biggs of Burnsville and Gary Biggs of Greeneville, TN; sister:  Marlene Riddle of Green Mountain; and, 9 grandchildren.  Numerous other relatives also survive.

 

Funeral services will be held at 12 Noon Saturday, June 4, 2016, at McKee’s Chapel United Methodist Church in Dawsonville, GA.  Rev. Tony Holtzclaw will officiate. 

 

The family will receive friends at Banister Funeral Home on Thursday, June 2, from 12 Noon until 9PM, and all day on Friday and again on Saturday from 10AM until the service hour.

MARGARET HOLCOMBE RYMER

Margaret Holcombe Rymer, 94, of Mars Hill, passed away Monday, May 30, 2016 at Madison Health and Rehabilitation.  A native of Madison County, she was a daughter of the late Fred H. and Kemmie Davis Holcombe.  She was also preceded in death by a son: William Thomas  Rymer; a sister: Irene Holcombe and brothers: James, Herschel, Harlon, Edd and twin brother Elsberry Holcombe.

Surviving is a daughter: Becky Wyatt and husband David of Lake Wales, FL; a sister: Hazel Greene and husband Cecil of Boone; 4 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren and 4 great-great grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held at 11 A. M. Wednesday, June 1, 2016 in Mars Hill Baptist Church Cemetery. Rev. Kevin Boone will officiate.

HATTIE MILLER BRADFORD

Hattie Miller Bradford, 87, of Bald Mountain, passed away Friday, May 27, 2016, at the home of her daughter.  A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late Quince and Berdie Woodby Miller.  She was the wife of the late George Bradford.  Hattie was also preceded in death by a son:  Gene Bradford; 3 infant children; brothers:  Cal, George and Arson; and sisters:  Sudie, Lucy and Ollie.

Surviving are 2 daughters:  Berdie Haney, with whom she made her home, and Sue Isler and husband, Putt, of Gaffney, SC; grandchildren:  Aaron, Paul, Kelly, Randall and Brandon; 12 great grandchildren, and 4 great great grandchildren; brothers;  Jay Miller and Harley Miller of Greeneville, TN; a sister:  Anna Belle Barrett of Greeneville, TN; and, several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 4PM Sunday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Rev. Burl Ledford will officiate.  Burial will be in Higgins Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 2:30 until 4PM prior to the service at the funeral home.

ANDY ROBINSON

Andy Robinson, 91, of Burnsville, went home to be with the Lord Saturday, May 21, 2016, at Spruce Pine Brian Center. A native of Yancey County, he was a son of the late Elzie and Ada Higgins Robinson, and the husband of Josie Phillips Robinson, who died in 2006.  He was also preceded in death by a son:  Larry Robinson.  Andy volunteered for several years at area nursing homes, playing and singing gospel music.  He enjoyed working in his vegetable and flower gardens.

Surviving are his granddaughter:  Delores Garland and husband, Bart;2 great granddaughters:  Maddison and Emmaline Garland; a daughter-in-law:  Madge Robinson; 2 sisters:  Anna Mae Vickers and husband, Lynwood, and Gladys Hughes, all of Burnsville; and, a brother:  Fred Robinson of Old Fort.

Funeral services will be held at 2PM Monday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Rev. Billy Mitchell will officiate.  Burial will be in the Bee Log Hill Cemetery.

The family will receive friends 1 hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
