Virginia Phillips, 82, of Sleepy Hollow Road, went home to be with the Lord Saturday, October 13, 2012 at her home. She was a daughter of the late James and Anna Mae McCombs Young of West Virginia. She was also preceded in death by 2 sisters and 4 brothers. Virginia was a member of Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church.
Surviving are her husband of 60 years, Frank Phillips; a son Bobby Phillips and wife Diane and a grandson: Travis Phillips all of Burnsville; a brother: Paul Young, Sr. of Parkton, MD; a sister-in-law: Mable Young of Havre De Grace, MD and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 8 P. M. Tuesday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home. Pastor Jerry Shelton will officiate. A graveside service will be held at 11 A. M. Wednesday in Holcombe Cemetery on Meadow Road.
The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 P. M. Tuesday, prior to the service, at the funeral home.

ROY DONALD BIEDERMAN
Roy Donald Biederman was born September 2, 1949 in St. Louis, MO to Bea and John Biederman and died at his home in Burnsville, NC on October 13, 2012.
He grew up and went to school in Webster Groves, MO before joining the military after high school. Roy was a U.S. Marine Corp combat veteran having served in Vietnam.
On July 25, 1970 he married Elizabeth Mayo Legg and they made their home in St. Louis and then Jacksonville, Florida before moving to Burnsville in 1998. They loved their mountaintop home and spent many happy years there with their cats and “outdoor critters.” Unfortunately, Elizabeth predeceased him in 2004.
He leaves behind a brother: John Biederman, of Farmington, NM, his sister-in-law: Harriett Dame, brother-in-law: James Legg, and nephew: Jim Bledsoe, as well as his special friend and caretaker for the past year, Robert Watkins.

His ashes will be scattered by the family at a later date. Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home is assisting the Biederman family.
MARK VANCE RIDDLE
Mark Vance Riddle, 55, of Sharp Top Road died Friday, October 12, 2012. He was the son of Wanda and Pearson Riddle, Jr. of Burnsville.
Surviving in addition to his parents are a sister: Melynda Rose and husband, Whitney, of Fredericksburg, VA; a niece: Alexis; and a nephew: Jackson.
A memorial service will be held at 2 PM Saturday, October 27, 2012 at the home of Wanda and Pearson Riddle.
BRUCE C. McINTOSH
Bruce C. McIntosh, 87, of the Bee Log community went home to be with the Lord Friday, October 12, 2012 at Memorial Campus of Mission Hospitals. A native of Yancey County, he was the son of the late Grover C. and Pearl Phillips McIntosh and husband of Mildred Fox McIntosh who died January 15, 2012. He was a WW ll Navy Seabee, a retired textile worker and a lifelong farmer. Bruce was a dedicated husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather.
Surviving are his daughter: Brenda Smith and husband Don; a granddaughter: Melissa Hoilman and husband Ryan and 4 great grandsons: Ashton, Bryson, Dalton and Colby Hoilman all of Burnsville.
Funeral services will be held at 3PM Sunday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home. The Rev. Royce Ball will officiate. Burial will be in the Holcombe Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 2 until 3PM Sunday prior to the service at the funeral home.
Maphria Shepherd, 89, of Burnsville went home to be with the Lord Monday, October 8, 2012 at Mountain Manor Assisted Living. A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late Back and Ida Angel Mathis and the wife of Charlie Mitchell Shepherd who died in 1997. She was also preceded in death by brothers: Troy, Clayton, Coy and Charles Mathis.
Surviving are a daughter: Ina Dean Owens and husband, Donald; a son: Larry L. Shepherd and wife, Karen; grandchildren: Carolyn Shepherd, Kathy Gortney and Kyle Johnson and wife, Michelle; 4 great grandchildren: Leigh Ann and Nichole Gortney and Sara and Bethany Johnson all of Burnsville; 3 sisters: Eunice Brown of South Carolina, Alice Crain and Betty McCurry of Burnsville and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 8 PM Wednesday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home. Rev. Tommy Murphy will officiate. A graveside service will be held at 11 AM Thursday in the Academy Cemetery.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Phillip Biggs, 73, of Burnsville, passed away Monday, October 2, 2012 in St. Josephs Hospital. A native of Yancey County, he was a son of the late McClain and Ruby Elkins Biggs and the husband of Jane Burleson Biggs who died in 2009.
Surviving are a daughter: Sharon Biggs Allison and husband, Shannon; grandson: Levi Allison; granddaughters: Alexis, Heidi, Kelly and Collin all of Burnsville.
A graveside service will be held at 10 AM Thursday in the Ledford~Adkins Cemetery on Haney Creek Road in Pensacola.
PHILLIP BURDETTE STYLES
Phillip Burdett Styles, 81, of Burnsville, passed away Monday, October 1, 2012 in Spruce Pine Brian Center Health and Rehab after a short illness. He was the son of the late Ben and Grace Styles. He was also preceded in death by his daughter: Daphne Styles Hinerman and two brothers: Bill and Henry Styles. Phillip was a 1951 graduate of Burnsville High School and served in the US Army in Germany. He was Chief Deputy under Sheriff Clyde McIntosh and worked for the Burnsville Police Department as an Investigator. Phillip retired as Superintendent from the N. C. Department of Corrections with 25 years service. He received the “Long Leaf Pine” Award in 1998 from Governor James B. Hunt. Phillip loved his flowers, gardening, antiques and his family.
He is survived by his wife of 18 years, Jeanne Ray Styles; sisters: Faye Ballard and husband, Frank, of Burnsville, and Louise Whitson and husband, Bill, of Limestone, TN; brother: Lee Styles and wife, Mary, of Glen Rock, PA; granddaughter: Courtney Whitson Cook and husband, Brian, of Stuarts Draft, VA; grandson: Ryan Whitson of Waynesboro, VA; Mother-in-law: Billie Marie Ray of Burnsville; brothers-in-law: Gary Ray and wife, Jennie, of Greenville, SC and Jimmy Ray and wife, Virginia, of Burnsville and a host of wonderful nieces, nephews cousins and good friends.
A Celebration of Life service will be held at 2 PM Thursday, October 4, 2012 in Higgins Memorial United Methodist Church with Rev. Wes Sharpe officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to ones favorite charity or church.
MAXINE THOMAS TURBYFILL
Maxine Thomas Turbyfill, 85, passed away, Monday, October 1, 2012 at Brookside Rehab & Care. She was the daughter of the late Dewey and Pearl Hall Thomas and was also preceded in death by 3 sisters: Flaude Thomas, Gladys Garland and Madge Hopson. She loved her family and especially enjoyed her great grandchildren when she was in good health. She attended Bolens Creek Baptist Church until she moved to Brookside where she enjoyed Sunday morning services and Bible study.
Surviving are a daughter: Sheila Evans and husband, Harold; granddaughter: Michele Neill and husband, Jeff; grandson: Tracy Evans and wife, Jessica; 3 great grandsons and 4 great granddaughters; one sister: June Robinson of Green Mountain; brothers: Gene Thomas of Old Fort, Dean Thomas of SC and Marvin Thomas of Green Mountain and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 1 PM Wednesday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home. Dr. Chris Morgan will officiate. Burial will be in the Double Island Cemetery. Pallbearers will be great grandsons and nephews.
The family will receive friends from Noon until 1 PM prior to the service at the funeral home.
EDGAR LEE WHEELER
Edgar Lee Wheeler, 73, of Burnsville passed away Friday, September 28, 2012, at St. Josephs Hospital in Asheville. A native of Yancey County, he was a son of the late George E. and Zula Womack Wheeler. Edgar was a retired Real Estate Broker.
Surviving are his former wife: Linda Neill Wheeler; a daughter: Teresa Lee House and husband, Keith; two sons: Michael George Wheeler and wife, Teresa, and Joseph Edgar Wheeler; two sisters: Carolyn W. Bryant and husband, Richard, and Shirley Bryant and husband, Steve; 4 grandchildren; and, 4 great grandchildren, all of Burnsville.
A private family graveside service will be held in the Wheeler Family Cemetery at Riverside.
VEO W. BYRD
Veo W. Byrd, 93, formerly of Yancey County, went home to be with the Lord Saturday, September 29, 2012, at her home in Connelly Springs. She was a daughter of the late John Moss and Rose Ella Berry Wheeler, and the wife of Luther Byrd who died in 1985. Veo was also preceded in death by a sister: Mozelle Webb; and brothers: Boyd and Lloyd Wheeler. She was a member of Millers Chapel Free Will Baptist Church.
Surviving are 2 sons: Roger Byrd and wife, Sheila, of Burnsville, and Ronnie Byrd of Connelly Springs; 6 grandchildren: Timothy Byrd, Sherea Krause, Kristin Byrd, Kimberly Pruett, Lora Byrd and Sarah Byrd; 12 great grandchildren; 3 great, great grandchildren; a sister: Aleene Silvers and husband, Reece; and 2 brothers: Edgar Wheeler and Floyd Wheeler and wife, Letha, all of Burnsville.
Funeral services will be held at 2PM Monday in Higgins Free Will Baptist Church. Revs. Clifton McCurry and Trent Honeycutt will officiate. Burial will be in the Byrd Cemetery at Piney Hill.
The family will receive friends from 5 until 8PM Sunday at Higgins Free Will Baptist Church.
