PAUL WADE RANDOLPH

Paul Wade Randolph, age 64, of Gray, TN, went home to be with the Lord, while visiting family in the mountains of NC on Saturday, August 6, 2016.  Paul was a proud Veteran of the United States Army.  He attended Oak Dale Central Baptist Church in Surgoinsville, TN, where he served as the adult Sunday School Teacher.  He enjoyed working, hunting and fishing with his son and grandsons.  He was a loving husband, father and grandfather and will be greatly missed.

He was preceded in death by his father, Wade Randolph; and mother, Harriet Maxwell Hill.

He is survived by his loving wife of 43 years, Nina Randolph; son: Jason Randolph (Kerry); daughter:  Amber Randolph (Anthony McPeek); 4 grandchilren:  Jaysen, Dominique, Noah and Axel; sisters:  Debbie King (Ray), Linda Deyton (Wayne), Caren Jones (Doug) and Vickie Klein (Lou); brother:  Bruce Randolph; beloved father and mother-in-law:  R.L. and Lilllian Silvers; several nieces, nephews and a host of family and friends.

The family will receive friends from 5:00-7:00PM on Tuesday, August 9, 2016 at Carter-Trent Funeral Home in Church Hill, TN.  Funeral services will begin at 7:00PM with Pastor Freddie Freeman officiating.  Graveside service will be held at 1:00PM on Wednesday, August 10, 2016 at Silvers Family Cemetery (1095 Silas Brach Rd. Burnsville, NC, 28714) with Rev. Dayton Lewis officiating. 

In Lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Oak Dale Central Baptist Church (562 Stoney Point Rd. Surgoinsville, TN 37873).

OVAL TOMBERLIN

Oval Tomberlin, 93, of Micaville, passed away Monday, August 1, 2016 at Smoky Ridge Health and Rehabilitation.  A native of Yancey County, he was a son of the late Jay and Cora Buckner Tomberlin.  He was also preceded in death by a brother, Ralph Tomberlin.  Oval and his brother Ralph owned Home Improvement and Insulation Company. 

Surviving are his wife: Henrietta Rhoten Tomberlin; a son: Ronald Tomberlin and wife Louise of Micaville; a daughter: Scarlett Bradley of Arden; grandchildren: Sherry Tomberlin and Tony Bradley; two sisters: Opal Sheppard and husband Emery of Hendersonville and Mauvlline Lawson of Denver, NC and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 3 P. M. Sunday, October 23, 2016 in Micaville Presbyterian Church.  Pastors John and Beth Hall will officiate.

CLAUDINE ARROWOOD STAFFON

Claudine Arrowood Staffon, 88, of Jonesboro, GA, went home to be with the Lord Wednesday, July 27, 2016, at her home.  A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late Roadman and Gladys Honeycutt Arrowood, and the wife of the late Clinton C. Staffon, Sr.  She was also preceded in death by a sister:  Shirley Arrowood Smith; and a grandson:  Rusty Wood.  Claudine was an avid reader, the Bible being her favorite.

 

Surviving are her children and spouses:  Sharon S. Chapman and husband, Larry, of Campobello, SC, Vicki S. Wood and husband, Ted, of Griffin, GA, Sonya S. Sharpe and husband, Ross, of Ellijay, GA and Clinton Staffon, Jr. and wife, Lisa, of McDonough, GA; grandchildren:  Kim Wood, Carrie C. Gosnell, Jeremy Chapman, Dustin Sharpe, Hayley S. Smith, Dylan Staffon, Makinzie Staffon and Brittany Shaddix; 12 great grandchildren; 2 great, great grandchildren; and 2 sisters:  Earlene Arrowood Engle of Asheville and Patricia Arrowood Burrell of Canton.

 

Funeral services will be held at 3PM Sunday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Dr. Sam Smith will officiate.  Burial will be in the Honeycutt Cemetery on Coxes Creek.

 

The family will receive friends from 2 until 3PM Sunday prior to the service at the funeral home.

RALPH GRESENS

Ralph Gresens, age 86, of Burnsville, NC, passed away on Friday, July 22nd, 2016, at his home in The Reserve. A native of Elmwood Park, Illinois, he was the son of the late Edward and Grace Gresens, who preceded him in death.  He loved his family and his cars and delighted in driving the cars in and around Burnsville and at European Auto Festival car shows.

Surviving are his wife, Jean, of 61 years, and two sisters, Geraldyn Bergeron of Gurnee, Illinois, and Valerie Corbel of Redding, California.  Several nieces and nephews also survive.  He was a proud U. S. Marine and was often heard saying "Once a Marine, Always a Marine".

ELIZABETH FLEETWOOD BENNETT

Elizabeth Fleetwood Bennett,99,of Burnsville, passed away Thursday, July 14, 2016 at her home. She was a daughter of the late Barrow and Blanche Tilson Fleetwood.   Lib married Mark Wilson Bennett on August 4, 1938.  In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by  her husband Mark, who died Feb. 4, 1996, brothers: Tilson and Robert Fleetwood and sister Patti Carter.  Lib attended East Carolina Teachers College and was a graduate of Milligan College and Mars Hill College.  She taught in the Yancey County Schools at Burnsville and Micaville Elementary for 24 years.

Surviving are her children: Julia Bennett Norris (Staunton), Amanda Blanche "Bunny" Bennett and Dr. Mark W. Bennett, Jr (Patricia) all of Burnsville.  Granchildren: Heather Norris Hockaday (Danny), Staunton "Stauntie" Norris (Carrie), Samuel Bennett and William Bennett.  Great gradchildren: Jackson, Brennan, Yates, Thomas and Harper Hockaday, and Caden and Bennett Norris.  Several neices and nephews also survive.

A Clebration of Life Service will be held at 2 PM Wednesday, July 20, 2016 in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Niles Howell will officiate.  The family will recieve friends one hour prior to the service.

STANLEY KEITH CARROLL

Stanley Carroll, 63, of Burnsville, passed away Sunday, June 26, 2016 after a courageous battle with illnesses.  He was a devoted husband, brother, uncle and friend.  He was a local businessman, an avid sports fan, and a motorcycle enthusiast.  He was a member of Micaville Presbyterian Church. 

Stanley was preceded in death by his parents Ed and Flaude Boone Carroll.  Surviving are his wife, Beryl Bailey Carroll; a sister: Becky Pate and husband Dewey, Jr. of Burnsville; brothers: David Carroll and wife Becky of Burnsville and Bill Carroll and wife Sue of Asheville.  He is survived by eight nieces and nephews: Chris, Amber, Haley, Emily, Shelly, Kelby, John and Joe; eleven great nieces and nephews and a great-great niece.  He is also survived by many special friends and Smoke, the last cat he rescued.

A celebration of his life will be held at 7 P. M. Wednesday, June 29, 2016 in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Beth and John Hall will officiate.  The family will receive friends from 5 until 7 PM, prior to the service at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to the Yancey County Humane Society, 962 Cane River Church Road, Burnsville, NC 28714.

LAWRENCE RAY

Lawrence Ray, 85, of Possum Trot, went to his Heavenly home Sunday, June 26, 2016 at Smoky Ridge Health and Rehabilitation in Burnsville.  A native of Yancey County, he was a son of the late Blake and Ruby Wilson Ray.  He was also preceded in death by sisters:  Doris Ray, Helen Thomas and Mary Alice Carroll; and a brother: Earl Ray.  Lawrence served our country in the US Army, Artillery Division, during the Korean War from 1951 until 1954.  He was raised to have a strong work ethic which he used daily in his life as a farmer.  He grew tomatoes, tobacco and raised Black Angus Cattle.  He loved his family and enjoyed spending time with them.  Lawrence was a kind, quiet man who was a good friend and neighbor to all.  He was a member of Pleasant Valley Baptist Church.

Surviving are his wife of 57 years:  Mafrey Barnett Ray; 3 children: Deborah Metcalf, and husband, Clifford of Burnsville; Nancy Barefoot, and husband, Kenny of Weaverville; and Andrew Ray of Burnsville; a brother: Wilson Ray, and wife, Barbara of Burnsville; grandchildren: Jeremy (Jody), Jason, Hayden, Anna Grace and Collin; 3 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 7:00 PM Tuesday, June 28, 2016, in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home. Revs. Bobby Ray and Steve Robinson will officiate.   A graveside service will be held at 11 AM Wednesday in the Pleasant Valley Baptist Church Cemetery on Possum Trot, with Military graverites by Sgt. E.L. Randolph, Chapter 57 DAV.

The family will receive friends 6:00 until 7:00 PM Tuesday, prior to the service at the funeral home.                                              

 

ROGER AUTREY

Roger Winthrop Autrey, 79, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, June 22, 2016, at his home.  A native of Yancey County, he was the son of the late Ramon and Annie Mae Shuford Autry.  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter: Deborah Ann Cooke; and, a brother: John Terrell Autrey.  Roger had resided in Buncombe County since 1975.  He was a devout Christian,  and member of Starnes Cove Baptist Church.  He served 20 years as a Sunday School Teacher and held various other positions within many Baptist Churches.  Roger, CW4, retired in 1975 from the US Army after serving two tours in Vietnam.  He was highly decorated having received four bronze stars and two purple hearts.  Later he was a General Manager with Buck Stove and served as a Chaplain Assistant with the VA Hospital for many years.     

Surviving are his wife:  Sharon Louise Smith Autrey of the home; son:  Daniel Ray Autrey, and wife, Kathy, of Hayes, VA; daughter:  Denise Autrey Burton, and husband Rick, of Durham; step-children:  Evelyn Quinn, and husband, Stanley, of Fairview, Robin Ruit and husband, Tom, of Swannanoa, Kim Fullbright and husband, Tim, of Asheville, Jill Renee Parker, Amanda Lauren Skowron  and Jessica Blankenship; Tom Hooper, and wife, Sherri, of Mills River, and Sean Mitchell and many great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral services will be held at 12:30 PM Monday, June 27, at Starnes Cove Baptist Church.  Charlie Sams will officiate.  Burial will be held at 2:00 PM Monday, June 27, at Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery with full military honors.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.

PEARL EDWARDS FENDER

Pearl Edwards Fender, 96, of the Little Creek Community, went to her Heavenly home, which she had worked so many years for, Saturday, June 18, 2016 at Smoky Ridge Health and Rehabilitation.  A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late Reverend Emory and Minnie Atkins Edwards, and the wife of Howard Fender, who died in 2001.  She was also preceded in death by a daughter-in-law: Wanda Ray Fender; son-in-law: Don Ramsey; grandchildren: Donny Allison Fender and Kelly Joe and Keith Jason Bradford; a sister and three brothers.  Pearl was a member of Higgins Free Will Baptist Church.

Surviving are daughters: Ethel Lou Bradford and husband Junior Ray Bradford, and Norma Edwards and husband Alden of Burnsville, sons: Ezra Fender and Darius Fender and wife Hope of Burnsville and Larry Fender and wife Sandra of Marion; 10 grandchildren: Lisa Miller, Patrick Bradford, Sherri Peterson, Tina Bryant, Randall Fender, Crystal Bradford, David Fender, Glendon Fender, Jada MacLellan and Josh Fender; 25 great grandchildren, 8 great-great grandchildren; a sister; Mildred Adkins of Roxboro and three brothers; Creed Edwards of Burnsville, Coy Edwards of Texas and Homer Edwards of Marion.

Funeral services will be held at 7 P. M. Monday in the chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  The Revs. Keith Miller and Junior Peterson will officiate.  A graveside service will be held at 10 A. M. Tuesday in the Fender Cemetery at Bee Log.

The family will receive friends from 5 until 7 P. M. Monday, prior to the service at the funeral home.

JOHN VERNON CASTEEL

John Vernon Casteel, 26, formerly of Burnsville, passed away Thursday, June 16, 2016.  A native of Yancey County, he was a son of John Larry Casteel and the late Linda Riddle Casteel of Burnsville.

 

Surviving, in addition to his father, are 2 sisters:  Kimberly Diane Casteel and Crystal Lynn Riddle both of Burnsville; 2 brothers:  Larry Allen Casteel and wife, Ellen, of Unicoi, TN and Shannon Riddle and wife, Angela, of Burnsville; 2 aunts:  Diane Surrett  and Donna Chandler both of Marion; 2 uncles:  Billy Casteel and wife, Joan, of Burnsville and Willie Byrd and wife, Geneva, of Walhalla, SC; 2 nieces:  Jenny and Allison; 5 nephews:  Michael, Kenny, Konnor, Keaton and Shane, all of Burnsville.  Numerous cousins also survive.

 

Funeral services will be  held at 2PM Tuesday, June 21, 2016, in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Rev. Darrel Tipton will officiate.  Burial will be in the McIntosh Cemetery on Langford Branch.

 

The family will receive friends 2 hours prior to the service at the funeral home, and at other times will be at the home of Shannon Riddle.

 

Donations may be made to Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home to assist with funeral expenses.
