MAUDE FOX WALDEN

Maude Fox Walden, 56, of Gastonia, passed away Saturday, March 8, 2014, at Levine & Dickson Hospice House in Huntersville.  A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late Buck and Cora Briggs Fox, and the wife of Robert Walden, Sr., who died in 1982.  She was also preceded in death by brothers:  Clarence, James, Zeke and Hubert Fox; and, a sister:  Mary Fox.

Surviving are 2 daughters:  Lisa Walden of Gastonia and Joany Walden of the home; 3 sons:  Robert Walden, Jr.,  Steve and James Walden, all of Gastonia; a sister:  Faye Bell of Gastonia; brothers:  Jason and David Fox of Florida, Luther Fox of Charlotte, and Howard Fox of Tennessee; 9 grandchildren; and, several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 2PM Thursday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Rev. Roscoe Briggs, Jr. will officiate.  Burial will be in the Sol Fox Cemetery.

The family will receive friends on Tuesday, March 11, 2014, from 4 until 7PM at her home in Gastonia, and 1 hour prior to the service at the funeral home on Thursday.

Her family wishes to extend special thanks to the staff of Lincoln Hospice and Levine and Dickson Hospice House.

Memorials may be made to Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home to assist with funeral expenses.

WILMA WILSON JOHNSON

Wilma Wilson Johnson, 68, of Gainesboro, TN, passed away unexpectedly Friday, March 7, 2014, at the home of her sister in Burnsville.  A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late Woodrow and Foye Crowder Wilson.  She was also preceded in death by 2 sisters:  Berneice Edwards and Jewell Pierce; and, 2 brothers:  Lawrence and Ernest Wilson.  Wilma was a member of Spring Creek Baptist Church in Cookeville, TN.  She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother.

Surviving are her husband of 47 years:  James Johnson; 3 daughters:  Sandy Stafford and husband, David, Shawn Pitman and Misty Chaffin and husband, Robert, all of Gainesboro, TN; 6 grandchildren; 3 sisters:  Wanda Johnson and husband, Bob, of Gainesboro, Carol Sue Crissone and Betty King of Burnsville; and, 4 brothers:  Junior and Michael Wilson of Burnsville, Ray Wilson and wife, Kathy, of Cookeville, TN and Roger Wilson of Asheville.

Funeral services will be held at 7PM Sunday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Rev. Denny Wilson will officiate.  A graveside service will be held at 11AM Monday in the McCurry Cemetery on Jims Creek.

The family will receive friends 3 hours prior to the service at the funeral home, and at other times will be at the home of her sister, Carol Crissone.

ROSSI LOWRY

Rossi Lowry, 91, of Burnsville, passed away peacefully, Saturday, March 1, 2014 at Brookside Rehabilitation and Care.  A former resident of Illinois and Indiana, he was a son of the late Marion and Bessie Ross Lowry.  He was a World War II Army Veteran and a member of Danville Masonic Lodge in Plainfield, Indiana.

Surviving are his wife of 28 years; Sharon Thomas Lowry, four sons: Dennis and Daniel Lowry of Indiana, David Lowry of Georgia and Philip Lowry of Ohio, a step son: Matthew Housley and wife Lisa and two step granddaughters: Olivia and Caitlin Housley all of Burnsville and a sister: Hazel Kyd of St. Louis, MO.

His body is being returned to Plainfield, Indiana for services and burial under the direction of Hampton-Gentry Funeral Home.

MARGARET GRIFFITH

Margaret Griffith, 90, of Burnsville, passed away Saturday, March 1, 2014, at Yancey House Assisted Living.  A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late Plato and Mary Young Banks, and the wife of Ben Griffith who died in 1990.  She was also preceded in death by a son:  Thomas M. Griffith, who died in 2009; a grandson:  Ben Griffith; and, siblings:  Esby, Grace, Clara, Wesley, Helen, Nell, Mary Martha, Ruth and Drate.  Margaret was an avid hiker and traveler.  She was a retired public school teacher with over 40 years of service.

Surviving are a son:  John Griffith and wife, Sherry, of Swannanoa; grandchildren:  Brian, Chelsea and Clayton Griffith; several great grandchildren; and, a sister:  Frances Taylor of Burnsville.

Burial will be at 10 AM Wednesday in Banks Cemetery on Bolens Creek. 

A memorial service will be held at 11 AM Wednesday in Micaville Presbyterian Church, of which she was a member.  Rev. Scot Garland will officiate.

The family will receive friends from 6:30 until 7:30 PM Tuesday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.

PANSY HENSLEY WILSON

Pansy Hensley Wilson, 96, of the Cane River Community, went home to be with the Lord Wednesday, February 26, 2014 at Brookside Rehab and Care.  A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late Sam and Jane Wilson Hensley.  She was the wife of Robie Wilson who passed away in 1969.  She was also preceded in death by a son, Mack Wilson, 2 infant daughters, a sister, and 3 brothers.  Pansy enjoyed reading her Bible, listening to gospel music and working in her garden.

 

Surviving are 5 daughters:  Lucille Wilson of Bald Mountain, Irene Gibbs, Frances Bradford, Peggy Street and husband, Jerry, all of Burnsville, and Mary Wilson of the home; a son:  Danny Wilson and wife, Susan of Marion; 13 grandchildren; 21 great grandchildren; and a sister, Judy Duckworth and husband, Charlie, of Weaverville.

 

Funeral services will be held at 2 PM Saturday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Rev. Perry Norton will officiate.  Burial will be in the Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church Cemetery.

 

The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 PM Friday at the funeral home, and at other times, will be at the home of Lucille Wilson and Frances Bradford.

 

The family wishes to thank the staff of Hospice of Yancey County and Brookside Rehab and Care for the care given to their mama.

BONNIE McCURRY

Bonnie McCurry, 93, of Burnsville, passed away Tuesday, February 25, 2014 at Brookside Rehab & Care.  A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late Riley and Effie Wyatt Parker and the wife of Guy S. McCurry who died in 1997.  She was a registered nurse for 22 years.

 

A memorial service will be held at 2 PM Sunday, March 2, 2014 in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Rev. Joe Bennett will officiate.

JOHNNY RUSSELL MALTBA

Johnny Russell Maltba, 67, of Green Mountain, passed away Friday, February 21, 2014, at his home.  A native of Burke County, he was a son of the late Eugene and Geneva Chapman Maltba.  He was also preceded in death by a sister:  Phyllis Woody.

Surviving are his wife of 47 years:  Linda Boone Maltba; a daughter:  Paula Smith and husband, Jeff, of Green Mountain; 3 granddaughters:  Teah Thomason and Matt, Mikayla Thomason and Travis, and Brittany Smith and Jeremy; a great granddaughter:  Gracie Burnette; a sister:  Shelba Jean Pyatte of Drexel; and, a brother:  Norman Maltba of Burnsville.

Funeral services will be 2PM Monday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Rev. Russell Hughes will officiate.  Burial will be in the Boone Cemetery at Plum Branch.

The family will receive friends 1 hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

LESTER PHILLIPS

Lester Phillips, 70, of Nebo, formerly of Burnsville, passed away Tuesday, February 11, 2014 at McDowell Hospital.  A native of Yancey County, he was a son of the late James and Lockie Adkins Phillips.  He was also preceded in death by his wife, Louise Crain Phillips; 4 sisters and 3 brothers.  He was of the Free Will Baptist Faith, enjoyed gospel singing and preaching and loved his family.  Lester attended First Christian Church of Marion.  He was a retired employee of Henredon Furniture Company.

 

Surviving are 3 sons:  Michael Phillips and wife, Joy, Jeff and David Phillips all of Burnsville; 2 step daughters:  Jennifer Collins and husband, Dee, of Nebo and Gina Wright of Marion; a sister:  Zula Hensley of Burnsville; 2 brothers:  D. L. Phillips and wife, Sandy, of Huntersville and Segal Phillips and wife, Edith, of Burnsville; a sister-in-law:  Flossie Phillips of Burnsville; 10 grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

 

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Sunday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Rev. Bill Mitchell will officiate.  Burial will be in the Miller Hill Cemetery.

 

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

CHRISTOPHER DEAN BUTTKE

Christopher Dean Buttke, 51, of Burnsville, passed away Tuesday, February 11, 2014.  A native of Yancey County, he was a son of the late Allen and Katherine Fender Buttke and grandson of the late Regan and Zora Pate Fender.

Surviving are a son Christopher Lee Buttke and fiancée, Katie Brown, of Julian, NC; a sister, Kim Mitchell and husband, Mike; and a brother, Allen James Buttke, Jr. and fiancée, Sharon Williams, all of Burnsville; nieces: Kayla and Brandy Buttke and Tina Edwards; nephews: David Shelton, and Brandon, Nick and Matthew Mitchell; and the mother of his son, Daphne Baldwin.

A memorial service will be held at 7 P. M. Monday, February 17, 2014 in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Rev. Clifton McCurry will officiate.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

NORRIS ROBERTS DEYTON-JARRETT

Norris Roberts Deyton-Jarrett, 98, formerly of Burnsville, passed away Sunday, February 9, 2014 at Kindred Care and Rehab in Raleigh.   A native of Mitchell County, she was a daughter of the late Edd and Nell Morgan Roberts and the wife of Gibson Deyton, who died in 1966 and Jay Jarrett, who died in 1989.  She was also preceded in death by a son, Charles E. Deyton; sisters: Pearl Roberts, Lockie ‘Babe’ Honeycutt and Sally Slagle and brothers: Charles, George, Will and Fred Roberts.  

Surviving are her son: L. G. Deyton and Lynne; granddaughter: Susan Deyton and grandson: Stephen Deyton, all of Raleigh.

Funeral services will be held at 2 P. M. Monday, February 17, 2014 in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Pastor Wes Sharpe will officiate.  Burial will be in the Garland Cemetery at Red Hill.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
