LINDA FAYE PARKER

Linda Faye Parker, 66, of Burnsville, entered this life on September 5, 1947, and went home to be with the Lord on Good Friday, April 18, 2014.  She was the daughter of the late Juanita Steward.  She was also preceded in death by a sister:  Pauline Parrish of Morristown, TN, and a great aunt:  Nell Ray of Boone.  Linda worked at OMC in Burnsville and retired as a CNA.

 

Linda leaves to honor her memories:  devoted ex-husband:  Randy Parker of Burnsville; 2 sons:  Doug Steward of Boone and Lonnie Parker and wife, Darla, of Burnsville; 3 daughters:  Shelby, Stephanie and Teresa Parker, all of Burnsville; 11 grandchildren:  Jordon Steward, Terrill Brooks, Shawn and Nessie Barnes, Kendrick Steward, Isaiah and Zackrey Parker, Naheim Lee, Keona, Lonna and Serenity Parker; 3 great grandchildren:  Carter Brooks, Kaysen Sander and Anthony Chandler;  nephew:  Stacy Wilson; aunt:  Mary Wilson; uncle:  J. C. Wilson of Morristown; sisters-in-law; brothers-in-law; and, hosts of cousins and devoted friends.  She had 2 very special and devoted caregivers:  Patty Garland and Chris Greene whom she loved dearly.

 

Funeral services will be held at 2PM Tuesday in Griffith Chapel Church, of which she was a member.  Rev. Richard Blanton will officiate.  Burial will be in the Marietta Adkins Cemetery.

 

The family will receive friends from 6 until 8PM Monday at Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home, where the body will remain until the service hour.

 

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the family to help with funeral expenses.

CAROLYN 'BO-BO' BOGGS

Carolyn “Bo-Bo” Boggs, 55, of Burnsville, passed away, Thursday, April 17, 2014 at Brookside Rehabilitation and Care.  A native of Yancey County, she was the daughter of the late Norman and Carrie Jones Boggs.  She was also preceded in death by a sister, America Boggs, who died in 2013.

 

She is survived by a cousin, Mildred Deal, and several other cousins.

 

Funeral services will be held at 1 PM Saturday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Rev. Scot Garland will officiate.  Burial will be in the Verlin Jones Cemetery on Plum Branch.

 

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

MRANDIA ROBINSON

Mrandia Robinson, 93, of Burnsville, passed away Saturday, April 12, 2014.  A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late Silas and Lisa Higgins Silvers, and the wife of Frank Robinson, who died in 1996.  She was also preceded in death by a grandson: Timothy Deyton; a great granddaughter: Ashley Riddle; 7 sisters and 8 brothers. Mrandia loved her family, friends and animals

Surviving are 3 daughters:  Nelle Larson and husband, Pat, of Lawrenceville, GA, Mae Riddle and husband, James, of Burnsville and Deborah Mitchell and husband, Ben, of Monroe; 10 grandchildren: Debra Termei, Darlene Whitson, Tammy Williams, Troy Adbi, Rick Riddle, Ron Riddle, Renee Riddle, Jennifer Hartsell, Jessica Abee and Sarah Mitchell; 16 great grandchildren; 8 great-great grandchildren; a sister:  Gladys Woodby of Burnsville; and, 2 brothers: Dolph Silvers and wife, Lillian, and S. W. Silvers and wife, Mildred, all of  Burnsville.

Funeral services will be held at 7:30 PM Monday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Rev. Billy Mitchell will officiate.  A graveside service will be held at 11AM Tuesday in Howell Cemetery on Patterson Branch.

The family will receive friends from 6 until 7:30 PM Monday, prior to the service, at the funeral home.

WILKIE RANDOLPH

Wilkie Randolph, 87, of Little Creek, went home to be with the Lord Friday, April 11, 2014, at his home.  A native of Yancey County, he was a son of the late Malone and Abbie Adkins Randolph, and the husband of Atlas Whitson Randolph who died in 1998.  He was also preceded in death by sisters:  Evia Hunter, Ollie Cantrell and Bashi Emory; 3 brothers:  Arthur, Roscoe and J. B. Randolph; and, a grandson:  Toby Elisha Randolph.  Wilkie was a Korean War US Army Veteran.

Surviving are 2 sons:  Stacey Randolph and Ronnie Randolph and wife, Marsha, all of Burnsville; 2 granddaughters:  Jeanne Randolph of Burnsville and Elizabeth Renegar of Weaverville; 4 great grandchildren:  Brooke Whitehead of Burnsville, Elisha Randolph, Caeley and Grayson Renegar all of Weaverville; his best friends and companions, his dogs:  Sadie and Doc; a brother:  Clarence Randolph of Chesnee, SC; and, a sister:  Nannie Couch of Spartanburg, SC.  Several nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral services will be held at 2PM Tuesday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Rev. Raymond Phillips will officiate.  Burial will be in Whitson Cemetery at Bent Creek with Military graverites by SGT E. L. Randolph Chapter 57, DAV.

The family will receive friends 1 hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

The family wishes to express their appreciation for the care given their father by Annette King and Maggie Phillips, and everyone at Hospice.

DESSIE FENDER

Dessie Fender, 94, passed away Thursday, April 10, 2014, at Elizabeth House-Four Seasons in Flat Rock.  A native of Yancey County, she was the daughter of the late James and Ida Pate Ball and the wife of Rufus Fender, who died in 1981.  She was also preceded in death by two brothers:  James Ball, Jr., and Robert Ball; and three sisters:   Georgia Oakes, Jessie Elkins and Vessie Wright.

 

She is survived by a son, Thomas Fender and wife, Elaine; 2 granddaughters:  Katrina Buckner and husband, Greg, and Lindy Fender Yelton all of Fairview; 6 great-grandchildren:  Greg Buckner and wife, Christina, Erich Buckner and wife, Kelli, Colby Scroggs, Sydney Yelton, Sarah Buckner and Taylor Buckner.

 

Funeral services will be held at 2 PM Sunday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Rev. Ronnie Anglin will officiate.  Burial will be in the Fender Cemetery.

 

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

CLIFTON JASON BRIGGS

Clifton Jason Briggs, 76, of Micaville went to be with the Lord Monday, April 7, 2014 after an extended illness.  A native of Yancey County, he was a son of the late Anderson and Leathea Laws Briggs.  He was also preceded in death by brothers:  Edgle and Stevie Briggs.

 

Left behind to cherish his memory are his loving wife of 54 years, Louise Ray Briggs; daughters:  Deborah Autrey and husband, Rev. Dennis Autrey and Wanda Briggs all of Burnsville and Tammy Pitman and husband, Tim, of Bakersville; 5 grandchildren:  Jennifer Autrey, Dwayne Autrey and wife, Crystal, Justin Autrey and wife, Michelle, and Amanda and Deanna Pitman; 5 great grandchildren:  Kylie, Ivey, Daeus, Alexander and Talon; 3 step great-grandchildren:  Eli, Mariah and Brielle; a special niece, Regina Briggs Carroll and her family, along with several other nieces and nephews; brothers:  James Briggs, Leonard Briggs and wife, Evelyn, Kenneth Briggs and wife, Janice, L.C.  Briggs and wife, Cherel, Willard Briggs and wife, Joan, Howard Briggs and friend, Cathy; sisters:  Opal Shook and husband, Charles, Maggie Wilmoth and husband, Art, Barbara Harding, and husband, David, Flossie Fox and husband, Edison, and Mary Ellen Murphy; and a sister-in-law:  Carliss Briggs.

 

Funeral services will be held at 11 A.M. Saturday in Bowditch Union Church of which he was a member and Deacon.  Revs. Ronnie Whitson and Dennis Autrey will officiate.  Burial will be in the Clifton Briggs Family Cemetery on Sam Jones Road.

 

The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 P.M. Friday at Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home where the body will remain until taken to the church to lie in state one hour prior to the service at the church.

RUSSELL DAVID THOMAS

Russell David Thomas, 85, of Troutman, passed away on Tuesday, April 8, 2014.  A native of Yancey County, he was a son of the late Robert and Mary Parker Thomas.  He was also preceded in death by his stepmother:  Vaughtie Pate Thomas; and, an infant son:  Donald Lee Thomas.  After his retirement from Reeves Bros., Rev. Thomas devoted many years to spreading the Good News of Jesus Christ to inmates across America with Rock of Ages Prison Ministries.  He was a member of  a loving and supportive church family at Gloryland Baptist Church in Statesville.

Surviving are his wife:  Helen Ray Thomas; sons:  Phillip Thomas and wife, Angie, and  Ronnie Thomas and wife, Bonita; daughters:  Linda Patrick and husband, Michael, and Elaine Thomas; grandchildren:  Heather Kelley and husband, James, Christopher Thomas and wife, Crystal, Michael Thomas and wife, Michelle, Rusty Thomas and wife, Nicole, Adam Thomas and wife, Lisa, Tracy Harrison and husband, Billy, Ashley Atherton and husband, Jeremy, Laura Elliott; 2 sisters:  Francis McCurry and husband, Dennis, and Peggy Ray; a brother:  Jim Thomas and wife, Judy; and, 19 great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 11AM Thursday in Gloryland Baptist Church.   A graveside service will be held at 4:30PM at Pleasant Valley Baptist Church Cemetery in Burnsville.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Hospice and Palliative Care of Iredell County.

DR SIDNEY 'CHIP' ZULLINGER

Dr. Sidney ‘Chip’ Zullinger, III, 63, of Houston, Texas and Manassas, VA passed away unexpectedly Tuesday, April 1, 2014 in Houston.  A native of South Carolina, he was a son of the late Sidney Zullinger, Jr. and Kathryn Rathbone Zullinger.  At the time of his death, he was Chief Elementary School Officer in Houston Independent School District in Texas. He earned his B.S. in 1973 from Mars Hill College, his M.A. in Educational Administration from Western Carolina University in 1979, and received a Doctorate in Educational Administration from the University of North Carolina-Greensboro in 1991.

A teacher, coach, principal and superintendent, he touched thousands of student’s lives.  Chip served as Yancey County School Superintendent for two years beginning in 1984, and served as superintendent for school systems in Charleston and Denver, among others in North Carolina, South Carolina, Wyoming, Virginia and Colorado and Executive Director of an educator’s union in South Carolina.  A recently released documentary “If You Build It” focuses on an innovative class formed in rural Eastern North Carolina.  The director of this film described Zullinger as a “renegade school superintendent, a great thinker and a steamroller when it came to getting kids the education they deserve.”

Surviving are his wife; Pam Young Zullinger of Manassas; two sons: Sidney Zullinger, IV of Manassas and Zach Zullinger of Greensboro.

A memorial service will be held at 5 P. M. Wednesday, April 9, 2014 in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Rev. Ricky Ray will officiate.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. 

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Heart Association.

GALE SILVER

Gale Silver, 81, of Shoal Creek, went home to be with the Lord, Saturday, April 5, 2014, at his home surrounded by his family.  A native of Yancey County, he was a son of the late Shelby and Martha Silver.  He was also preceded in death by his first wife, Doris Jones Silver; sisters: Carrie, Callie, Evie and Nola, and brothers:  Dee and Dan Silver.  Gale was a Korean War US Army Veteran.  He was a loving husband, daddy and papaw.

Surviving are his wife of 46 years:  Emogene Branton Silver; sons:  Daryl and Adam Silver of the home; daughters:  Deborah Roberts and husband, Dale, of Weaverville, Shelia Fruechtenicht of Greenville, SC, Theresa Radeker and husband, Scott, of Rock Springs, GA, Angie Laws and husband, Mark, of Green Mountain and Megan Silver of the home; grandchildren: Kristie, Becky, Doug, Ellie, Faith, Shelby, Tanner, Sydney, Kylie and Ayden; great grandchildren: Parker and Alex; Sisters: Eva McCurry and husband, R. D., of Marion and Barbara Fox of Burnsville; a brother: David Silver of Marion; and his mother-in-law: Etta Jones of Burnsville.

Funeral services will be held at 2 P. M. Wednesday in Young’s Chapel Free Will Baptist Church, of which he was a member.  The Revs. Roger Thompson, Phillip Hughes and Bernie Jones will officiate.  Burial will be in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 P. M. Tuesday at Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home, where the body will remain until the service hour.

RANSOM L. PATE

Ransom L. Pate, 90, of Burnsville, passed away Saturday, April 5, 2014, at St. Josephs Hospital.  A native of Yancey County, he was a son of the late Shirden and Annie Adkins Pate.  He was the husband of Palma Anderson Pate who died in 2011.  He was also preceded in death by brothers:  Bill, Jim and Clarence Pate.  He was a World War II Navy Veteran and a member of the Sgt. E. L. Randolph Chapter 57 DAV.  Ransom was an electrician and operated Pate’s Trucking.  He was a loving Papaw.

Surviving are a daughter: Jeanie Chrisawn and husband, Keith, of Burnsville; two sons: Donald Pate of Burnsville and Gerald Pate of Micaville; a granddaughter: LeAnn Capps and husband, Jeffrey, of Weaverville; a grandson: Alan Chrisawn and wife, Amanda, of Micaville;  3 great grandchildren: Colby, Callie and Josh; 2 step great grandchildren:  Rodney and Kasey Kinser; and, numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 7:30 PM Monday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home Chapel.  Revs. Ricky Ray and Keith Blankenship will officiate.  A graveside service will be held at 10:30AM Tuesday in the Eddie McMahan Cemetery at Low Gap.

The family will receive friends from 6 until 7:30 PM prior to the service at the funeral home.
