ROSALEE YOUNG

Rosalee Young, 90, of Brooklyn, NY, passed away Tuesday, May 5, 2015, at her home.  A native of Avery County, NC, she was the daughter of the late Augusta and Maude Shade Mathis, and the wife of 69 years to the late Paul Young of Burnsville, NC. 

 

Surviving are 3 sons:  Paul, Rocky and Kevin; 4 daughters:  Theresa, Yvonne, Denise and Hope; 21 grandchildren; 34 great grandchildren; 2 great, great grandchildren; 2 brothers:  J. C. and John Mathis; 1 sister:  Berdie Ann Carr; and many others family members and friends.

 

The family will receive friends from 2:30 until 3:30PM Sunday at Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Burial will follow in Marietta Adkins Cemetery.

WILLIAM 'BARRY' McKINNEY

Barry McKinney, 54, of Newdale, went to be with his Heavenly Father Friday, May 1, 2015, at Blue Ridge Regional Hospital.  He was a son of Bill and Helen Russell McKinney of Newdale.  He graduated from Mountain Heritage High School in 1978.  Barry’s greatest love and joy was the Lord and sharing how awesome our God is.  Barry was an active member of Faith Fellowship Church, where he was a bass player with the praise and worship team, sound man, and manager of the online FFCN radio station, The Worship Place.  He was also a ham radio operator.

 

Surviving, in addition to his parents, are his wife of 10 years:  Rachel Howell McKinney; daughter:  Anna Gilbert and husband, Brian, of Inman, SC; a grandson:  Hunter McKinney of Inman; sister:  Kim Huskins of Newdale; niece:  Lauren Robinson and husband, Charles and children Ashlyn and Zachary of Newdale; sisters-in-law:  Nancy Randolph and husband, Terrill, of Concord, Glenna Woodard and husband, Jack, of Wise, VA; brother-in-law:  James Madison Howell and wife, Karen, of Asheville; 2 special nieces:  Stephanie Allen and Sherry Seager; and, numerous nephews and nieces.

 

Join us for a celebration of Barry’s life Sunday, May 3, 2015, at 11AM at Faith Fellowship Church, where the family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.  Rev. David Gillespie will officiate.

 

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Newdale Fire Department, P. O. Box 560, Micaville, NC 28755, or Faith Fellowship Local Outreach, P. O. Box 756, Micaville, NC 28755.

 

Private burial will be held at the church cemetery.

KARL SCHARF

Karl “Opa” Scharf, 95, of Burnsville, passed away Tuesday, April 28, 2015 at the home of his daughter and son-in-law.  A native of Kiel, Germany, he was a son of the late Karl Emil and Annie Fassman Scharf.  He immigrated to the United States in 1952.  He and his late wife, Gertrude Wilhemina Sophie obtained their citizenship in 1963.  Karl was a retired engineer with Chrysler in Detroit.  He has been a resident of Yancey County since 198l.  Karl enjoyed traveling, talking to people and making friends. 

 

Surviving are two daughters:  Ingrid Moussalli of Edwardsville, IL and Karen Cooper and husband, Donnie, of Burnsville; grandchildren:  Steven Scharf and wife, Gina, Christian Moussalli and wife, Melissa, Antione Moussalli, Tanya Craddick and husband, Michael, Andre Moussalli, Aida “Supa” Moussalli, Brian Cooper and fiancée, Lindsey Vance and John Thomas Cooper; great grandchildren: Aida Rose Moussalli, Angelo Tony Moussalli, Alexis Cooper, Bryson Cooper, Malachi Cooper and Andrew Cooper; and a sister, Edith Habers of Germany.

 

A memorial service will be announced at a later date.

TOMMY CRAIN

Tommy Crain, 74, of Alexander, passed away Friday, April 24, 2015 at CarePartners Hospice and Palliative Care in Asheville.  A native of Yancey County, he was the son of the late Earlis and Jennie Silvers Crain.  He was also preceded in death by a brother, Johnnie; and sisters:  Louise and Dora.  Tommy was owner and operator of Crain Tree Service. 

 

Surviving are 3 sons:  Randall Crain and wife, Kim, of Weaverville, Michael Crain of Leicester and Tommy Junior Crain of Alexander; 4 grandchildren:  David Crain, Randalyn Crain, Justin Crain and Michaela Crain; brothers:  Albert Crain and Kenneth Crain; sisters:  Margaret, Ennis, Joyce and Theresa; and by the mother of his children, Irene.

 

Funeral services will be held at 7 PM Monday, April 27, 2015,  in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Rev. Roy Shepherd will officiate.  A graveside service will be held at 11 AM Tuesday in the Triple C Cemetery in Nebo.

 

The family will receive friends from 5 until 7 PM Monday, prior to the service, at the funeral home.

NED WILSON

Ned Wilson, 77, of the Bald Mountain Community, passed away Thursday, April 23, 2015 at Brookside Rehabilitation and Care.  A native of Yancey County, he was a son of the late Floyd and Burle Fender Wilson.  He was also preceded in death by 4 brothers:  Clifton, Boone, Ted and Jack Wilson.

 

Surviving are his sisters: Chloe Ramsey, Maude Williams and husband, Floyd, and Gladys Wilson all of Burnsville.  Several nieces and nephews also survive.

 

Funeral services will be held at 7 PM Saturday, April 25, 2015, in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Brother Dayton Lewis will officiate.  A graveside service will be held at 2 PM Sunday in the Wilson Cemetery at Bald Mountain. 

 

The family will receive friends from 5 until 7 PM Saturday prior to the service at the funeral home. 

WAYNE PARKER

Wayne Parker, 81, of Burnsville, passed away peacefully, Monday, April 20, 2015 at the John F. Keever Solace Center.  A native of Mitchell County, he was a son of the late Frank and Myrtle Sparks Parker.  He was also preceded in death by siblings:  Dayton Parker, Juanita Cox, Smith Parker, Donald Parker, Mack Parker, Jim Parker and Marlene Ledford.  He was a U.S. Army, 82nd Airborne Paratrooper Veteran.  Wayne was the founder and owner of Parker Lumber Company.  He attended Bald Creek United Methodist Church.  He was an avid antique collector and enjoyed sports, especially watching his grandchildren play ball.

 

Surviving are his wife of 57 years, Ann Garland Parker; 3 children:  Marcia Huskins and husband, Darrell, of Burnsville, Lisa Zollman and husband, Alan, of Kingsport, TN and Tim Parker and wife, Wendy, of Burnsville; 5 grandchildren:  Leslie, Alli, Parker, Taylor and Trevor; a great grandson, Jaxon; and sisters:  Shelby Cornwell of Maiden, NC, Billie Jo Deyton of Green Mountain and Helen Hughes of Bakersville.

 

Funeral services will be held at 7 PM Thursday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Rev. A. J. Moore will officiate.   Graveside services will be held at 11 AM Friday in the Proffitt Cemetery on Hardscrabble with military grave rites conducted by Sgt. E. L. Randolph Chapter 57 DAV.

 

The family will receive friends from 5 until 7 PM Thursday prior to the service at the funeral home.

JOE BRIGGS

Joe Briggs, 91, of the Jacks Creek Community passed away Monday, April 13, 2015 at Weaverville Brian Center.  A native of Yancey County, he was a son of the late Gudger and Ida Tomberlin Briggs.  He was also preceded in death by two sisters:  Mary Etta and Mae Briggs; and two brothers:  Frank “Pedro” and Shelby Briggs.  Joe was a U.S. Army Veteran and a carpenter.

 

Surviving are his wife of 64 years, Maphra Hensley Briggs; a daughter, Pat Randolph and husband, Bill; sons: Michael Briggs and wife, Joyce, and Randy Briggs and wife, Darlene, all of Burnsville; grandchildren:  Brent and Shane Briggs and Brandon, Ali and Branson Randolph; great grandchildren:  Elijah, Willa, Esmae and Maslyn Briggs and Lyryn Randolph.

 

A memorial service will be held at 8 PM Thursday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Rev. Stacy Elkins will officiate.

 

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

PARALEE PHILLIPS HENSLEY

Paralee Phillips Hensley, 98, of Burnsville, passed away Sunday, April 12, 2015, at Mountain Manor Assisted Living.  A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late Monroe and Hattie Phillips, and the wife of Quillen Phillips who died in 1952, and the late Zeke Hensley.  She was also preceded in death by daughters:  Mabel Griffith and Lillian Bailey; grandsons:  Daryl Griffith and Jeff Bailey; a sister:  Nettie Robinson, and brothers:  Clyde, Riley and Frank Phillips.

 

Surviving are a son-in-law:  Jack Griffith of Granite Falls; grandsons:  Joel Griffith and wife, Linda,  Michael Griffith and Tony Bailey; great granddaughters:  Sarah and Hannah Griffith; 2 nephews:  Kenneth and Eugene Phillips; and, 2 nieces:  Patsy Christensen and Judy King.

 

Funeral services will be held at 2PM Wednesday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Rev. Robert Setzer will officiate.  Burial will be in the Pete Young Cemetery.

 

The family will receive friends 1 hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

RUTH BADAME

Ruth Badame, 84, of Burnsville, formerly of Maple Shades, NJ, passed away Saturday, April 11, 2015 at Blue Ridge Regional Hospital in Spruce Pine.  A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late Joe and Ella Mae Robinson Austin and the wife of George Badame, who passed away in 1983.  Ruth was also preceded in death by 4 sisters and 2 brothers.

Surviving are a daughter: Darlene Vile of Wakefield, VA, a grandson: John; two sisters: Pansy Robinson and Thelma Westall; and two brothers: Ned Austin and Bruce Austin, all of Burnsville. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral services will be held at 2 P. M. Tuesday, April 14, 2015 in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Rev. Philip Garland will officiate. Burial will be in the Dot Austin Family Cemetery on Indian Creek.  The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

JAMES D. PHILLIPS

James D. Phillips, 57, of Greenville, SC passed away Saturday, April 11, 2015 at St. Frances Hospital in Greenville.  A native of Buncombe County, he was a son of Leathia Riddle Phillips of Clyde and the late Charles D. Phillips.

Surviving in addition to his mother is a son: Justin Phillips of Greenville; a sister: Patricia Hannah of Clyde; 3 nephews: Dale O’Kelley of Blacksburg, SC and Dennis O’Kelley and Charles Light of Asheville and a niece: Melody McGraw of Swannanoa.

The family will receive friends from 12 noon until 1 P. M. Friday at Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Burial will be at 1:30 P. M. Friday in the McMahan Family Cemetery on Rocky Fork.
