BRUCE LEDFORD

Bruce Buchanan Ledford, 70, of Prices Creek, went home to be with the Lord, Monday, November 14, 2016 at Blue Ridge Regional Hospital.A native of Yancey County, he was a son of the late Alvia and Pantha Ogle Ledford. He was also preceded in death by sisters: Elizabeth Laws and Pauline Chandler and brothers: Ray Buchanan and Jack Ledford.  Bruce was a logger and enjoyed bear hunting and woodworking.

Surviving are his wife of 50 years, Mary Violet Laws Ledford: a son: Roger Ledford and wife Pam of Burnsville; a sister: Nelle Chandler of Burnsville; a brother: John Ledford and wife Pat of Spruce Pine; a granddaughter: Tiffany Ledford and grandsons: Tyler and Toby Ledford of Burnsville and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 1 P. M. Saturday, December 10, 2016, in the Wilson Family Cemetery, beside Prices Creek Church.  Rev. Philip Garland will officiate.

The family wishes to extend special thanks to Cindy Nanny and all the ladies at Hospice and Palliative Care of the Blue Ridge.

TIM FOX

Tim Fox, 51, of Spruce Pine, went home to be with the Lord, Friday, November 11, 2016, at St. Joseph’s Hospital.  A native of Yancey County, he was a son of Nelda Thomas Cooper of Burnsville and the late Clay Fox.  Tim enjoyed riding his Harley and fishing.

 

Surviving, in addition to his mother, are his wife of 26 years:  Rhonda Woody Fox; a nephew/son:  Tucker Jones and fiancée, Ashley Wyatt, of the home; sister:  Lisa Fox of Spruce Pine; stepfather:  Richard Cooper of Burnsville; and, his special “fur babies”: Catie and Evo.

 

Funeral services will be held at 3PM Sunday in Double Island Baptist Church, of which he was a member.  Pastor Rick Woody will officiate.  Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

 

The family will receive friends 1 hour prior to the service at the church.

IVA JEAN ROBINSON ELKINS

Iva Jean Robinson Elkins, 82, of Prices Creek, went home to be with the Lord Friday, October 28, 2016 at Care Partners Solace Center in Asheville. A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late James Henry and Viola Elkins Robinson and the wife of Grady Howard Elkins, who died in 1986. She was also preceded in death by a son: James Garrett Elkins. Iva enjoyed reading her Bible and loved helping others, having made numerous trips to Kenya, Africa with her oldest daughter, Wanda.

 

Surviving are five daughters:  Marlene Hudgins, Dianne Elkins and Shirley Crawly of Burnsville, Mira Dellinger of Gastonia, and Wanda Kyle of Conyers, GA,; sons:  Roger Elkins of Marion and Willard Elkins of Marshall; 10 grandchildren; 19 great grandchildren;  3 great-great grandchildren and a sister: Helen Tolley of Weaverville.

 

A memorial service will be held at 7 PM Friday, November 4, 2016 in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Rev Ronnie Robinson will officiate.  At her request, her body was cremated and in lieu of flowers, the family request that memorials be made to Hospice of Madison County, P.O. Box 69, Marshall, NC 28753 or the charity of one’s choice.

 

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the memorial service at the funeral home.

CLIFFORD MINOR JONES

Clifford Minor Jones, age 87, of Green Mountain, got his wings on Friday, October 28, 2016 and flew to his heavenly home.

Born April 17, 1929, in Atlanta, Georgia.  He was the son of the late Ralph and Velma Jones.  Cliff grew up in Georgia, Veteran of the U. S. Air Force.

Survivors include his wife, Martha, of the home; son and daughter:  Michael and Cynthia of Braselton, Ga.; grandsons:  Travis and Scott Rogers, of Georgia; great grandchildren:  Karson and Nolan of Georgia.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM Saturday, December 17, 2016 at Higgins Memorial United Methodist Church.  Donations may be made to Hospice of Yancey County, 856 Georges Fork Road, Burnsville, NC 28714, or Gideons International, P.O. Box 264, Burnsville, NC 28714, or any other charity of your choice.

VENICE LYNWOOD VICKERS

Venice Lynwood Vickers, 91, of Burnsville, passed on to eternal life with his Lord and family Friday, October 28, 2016, at his home.  He was born in McDowell County and grew up in Hickory and Lexington.  He was a son of the late Lee and Kate Milton Vickers.  Lynwood was preceded in death by brothers:  Justice and Bobby; sister:  Floy; and a son:  Randy Vickers.  He was a World War II US Air Force Veteran, having served in the 9th Air Force throughout Europe.  Lynwood was an employee of General Motors in Flint, Michigan, after which he and his wife retired to Burnsville.

 

Surviving are his wife of 66 years:  Anna Mae Robinson Vickers; sons:  Mikael Vickers and Kim, and Reggie Vickers and Denise Peterson, all of Burnsville; 14 grandchildren:  Renee, Eric, Qalissa, Misty, Lara, Jason, Anna, Brian, Jonathan, Raechel, Timmy, Jesse, Natalie and Rachel; 20 great grandchildren; his loving pet:  Einstein; his nephew:  Brian Vickers of NASCAR fame who enjoyed claiming Lynwood as his Granddad.

 

Funeral services will be held at 2PM Tuesday, November 1, 2016, in Burnsville First Baptist Church, of which he was a member.  Rev. Tommy James will officiate.  Burial will follow in Marietta Atkins Cemetery with grave rites by Sgt. E. L. Randolph Chapter 57 DAV.

 

The family will receive friends 1 hour prior to the service at the church.

 

Lynwood brought smiles, laughter and joy to all who knew him.

FONDA BORDERS HARRIS

On October 27, 2016 Fonda Borders Harris was suddenly called from her earthly home to be with her family in her heavenly home.Fonda was 64 years old.

 

Fonda was the daughter of the late Rev. Hugh and Dorothy Smith Borders.  Fonda graduated from Harris High School with honors, where she was quite an athlete, receiving numerous awards, including MVP in basketball.  Fonda went on to college at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, where she also graduated with honors, with a Bachelor of Science Degree in nursing.

 

Upon graduation she immediately went to work at Spruce Pine Community Hospital.  After a short time of nursing care, she took the position of Director of Continuing Education. Here, she spent days and nights training doctors, nurses, paramedics, firemen, first responders and many others.  It was only fitting that they were by her side doing everything in their power to keep her in this world.    After several years in education, she became the Director of Human Resources.  Here too, she touched many lives because she loved the people who care for others.  Fonda retired after 38 years of service, all in Spruce Pine.

 

To “Nonna”, church played a very important role in her life.  She is a member of First Baptist Church of Burnsville, where she has served as Sunday School teacher, on various committees, and sang in the choir with a voice as sweet as an angel.  She was also a very talented musician.

 

Surviving relatives is her husband of 43 years:  Phillip (Tony) Harris; a daughter:  LeeAnn Chastain and her husband Rusty of Cleveland, TN; a son:  Michael Harris and his wife Tiffany of Mars Hill, NC; a brother:  Ken Borders and his wife Pam of Spruce Pine; and a sister:  Dianne Borders of Greensboro; two very special aunts and cousins, and a very special granddaughter:  Esther Lynn Chastain.

 

A memorial service will be held at 4PM Sunday, October 30, 2016, in Burnsville First Baptist Church.  Pastor Tommy James will officiate.  The family will receive friends from 2 until 4PM, prior to the service at the church.

JOYCE WILSON RANDOLPH

Joyce is no longer suffering and has entered heaven!  She was born on March 3, 1950, to the late Garrett and Roxie Tipton Wilson.  She was also preceded in death by a sister:  Judy Wilson Souther. She attended Bald Creek School and graduated from Cane River High School, being the salutatorian of her class.  Joyce retired from Yancey County Department of Social Services at the end of 2006, working with the Food Stamp Program.  Many people have voiced their appreciation for how good she treated and served them in their times of need.  She had been a member of Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church since childhood.  Joyce loved her family and friends, and enjoyed helping people in need.

 

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law:  Denise and Gary Holcombe; 4 grandchildren:  Isaac, Sarah, Levi and Mary Grace; her husband:  Danny Randolph; their nephew:  Randy McIntosh and wife, Cynthia and children: Scott, Ashley and Joseph; and, Joyce and Danny’s cat:  Miss Girl.

 

Funeral services will be held at 7:30PM Saturday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Pastor Jerry Shelton will officiate.  A graveside service will be held at 1:30PM Sunday in Cane River Baptist Church Cemetery.  The family will receive friends from 5:30 until 7:30PM Saturday prior to the service at the funeral home.

 

We would like to thank Dr. Polgar for his kind and loving care of Joyce, and the administration, staff and nurses at the Brian Center in Weaverville for the outstanding love and care shown to Joyce.  Also, we would like to thank her cousin, Gail W. Carroll, who was there to the very end.

SHIRLEY HOWELL

Shirley Howell, 73, of the Bee Log Community of Yancey County, passed away Thursday, October 27, 2016, at Care Partners Solace Center in Asheville.  A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late Ossie and Verlon Hensley Edwards.  She was also preceded in death by 2 sons:  Roger Lee McFarland and James Stanley McFarland; a sister:  Juanell Hudgins; and, a granddaughter:  Elizabeth Ann McFarland.

 

Surviving are a daughter:  Michelle Pendley and husband, Louis, of Spruce Pine; sons:  Michael McFarland and wife, Angie, of Lincolnton and Lee McFarland and wife, Christel, of Burnsville; a sister:  Judie Honeycutt and husband, Benny, of Burnsville; brothers:  D. L. Edwards of Burnsville and Jackie Edwards of Statesville; 9 grandchildren; and, 4 great grandchildren.

 

Funeral services will be held at 3:30PM Sunday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Rev. Charles Carroll will officiate.  Burial will be in the Edwards Cemetery on Bee Log Hill.  The family will receive friends from 2 until 3:30 PM Sunday prior to the service at the funeral home.

NORMA THOMAS ROBINSON

Norma Robinson, 82, of Celo, went home to be with the Lord Wednesday, October 26, 2016, at Mitchell House in Spruce Pine. A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late Rass and Anna Mae Hall Thomas.  She was also preceded in death by a sister:  Iris Woody; brothers-in-law:  Talmadge Woody, Jr. and Clyde McIntosh; and an infant grandson:  Dennis Woody, Jr.  Norma was a member of Celo United Methodist Church.  She enjoyed traveling and caring for her family and friends.

Surviving are her husband of 63 years:  Charles Edward ‘Eddie’ Robinson, Sr.; a son:  Charles Edward Robinson, Jr., and wife, Vicki, of Burnsville; a daughter:  Angela Woody, and husband, Dennis, of Spruce Pine;  grandchildren:  Laura Laws, and husband, Scotty; Charles Robinson, III, and wife Laurn, Amanda Fender and husband Zack; Donna Woody, and Robert Woody and wife Kara; great grandchildren: Jessica, Britney, Ashlyn, Zachary, Abby, Kinslee and Becca; sisters:  Glenna McIntosh, of Burnsville and Marquita Wilson, and husband, Danny, of Morganton;  a brother:  Jim Thomas, of Asheville; an uncle:  Donald Thomas, and wife, Joshlyn, of Asheboro and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 2:30 PM Friday, October 28, 2016, in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Revs. Ken Anderson and Nathan Silver will officiate.  Burial will be in the Ballew Cemetery, on South Toe School Road.

The family will receive friends from 1:00 until 2:30 PM Friday, prior to the service at the funeral home, and at other times will be at the home of Charles Robinson on Upper Browns Creek Road.

DR. HARLON GRAY RAMSEY

Cedar Mountain - On October 24, 2016, Dr. Harlon Gray Ramsey went home to be with The Lord. He is preceded in death by his father, Marion Ramsey. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Dr. Robbie Carver Ramsey; his mother, Rosie Ramsey; his two sons, Lawrence and Farrell Ramsey; Lawrence’s children, Samuel Ramsey and Rachel Ball and her husband Albert; Farrell and Janet’s children, Danielle Christensen and her husband Seth, Shannon Gelalia and her husband Mike, Elicia Massengill and her husband Glen, and their son, Cooper.

First and foremost, Dr. Ramsey was a wonderful Christian husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and son. He received the Lord as his Savior at an early age and accepted the call to preach at the age of sixteen. Dr. Ramsey attended Mars Hill College, Fruitland Bible Institute, and Luther Rice Seminary. He, with the support of his high school sweetheart, continued to preach God’s Word for 63 years. Dear to his heart was his mentoring of young preachers and his advocation of mission work, home and abroad.

Visitation will be held Friday evening, October 28th from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm at Moody-Connolly Funeral Home in Brevard.

Service will be held at Cedar Mountain Baptist Church in Cedar Mountain, North Carolina on Saturday, October 29th at 11 AM. Officiating the service will be Reverends Clarence Ledford, Samuel Ramsey, Troy Cornett, and Dr. Gordon Benton. Pallbearers will be deacons, grandsons-in-law, and great-grandson.

Interment will be in Little Ivy Baptist Church Cemetery in Mars Hill, immediately following the service.
