DOROTHY BOONE CARROWAY

Dorothy Boone Carroway, 76, of Upper Browns Creek went home to be with the Lord, Wednesday, June 4, 2008 at Brookside Rehabilitation and Care. A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late Will and Arrie Jones Boone. She was the wife of the late Lawrence Carroway. She was also preceded in death by 2 sons: J. R. Grindstaff and Daniel Harrison and 3 brothers: Elmer Boone, Harold Boone and John Boone. She was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving are her son: Dennis Grindstaff and wife, Gloria, of Mars Hill; 3 grandchildren: Regina Snyder, Dewayne Grindstaff and wife, Tiffany, and Nicholas Grindstaff; 4 great grandchildren; 3 sisters: Emma Jane Stevens, Ola Mae Webb and Mable Boone all of Burnsville; a brother: Earl Boone of Marion and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 1 P.M. Saturday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home. Rev. Danny Jenkins will officiate. Burial will be in the Boone Cemetery on Upper Browns Creek.

The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 P.M. Friday at the funeral home and at other times, the family will be at the home of Mable Boone on Upper Browns Creek.

OLLIE SILVER STYLES

Ollie Silver Styles, 97, of Windom, passed away Tuesday, June 3, 2008 in Blue Ridge Hospital in Spruce Pine. A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late Mack and Kate Allen Silver and the wife of Kivet Styles who died in 1977. She was preceded in death by 2 sons: Phillip O. Styles and Donald “Buster” Styles; a sister: Vera Rice and a brother: Paul E. Silver. She was a member of Windom United Methodist Church.

Surviving are 4 daughters: Thelma Hughes and husband, Jack, Wilma Garland and husband, Rev. Philip Garland, and Katie Evans and husband, Jim, all of Burnsville and Diana Wooten and husband, Curtis, of Morganton; 2 sons: J. C. Styles and wife, Ginny, and Wade Styles and wife, Mary Jo; 2 daughters-in-law: Billie Jeanne Styles and Jewel C. Styles all of Burnsville; a sister-in-law: Helen Silver of Miami, FL and a brother-in-law: Murray “Junior” Styles and wife, Gin, of Burnsville; 18 grandchildren; 19 great grandchildren and 4 great-great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 8 PM Thursday in the chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home. Revs. Philip Garland and Scot Garland and David Styles will officiate. A graveside service will be held at 10 AM Friday in Pete Young Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 5 until 8 PM Thursday prior to the service at the funeral home.

CAROLYN JUDY BLANKENSHIP

Carolyn Judy Blankenship, 67, of Pensacola went home to be with the Lord, Tuesday, June 3, 2008. A native of Buncombe County, she was a daughter of the late Carter and Margaret Guinn Ogle. She was preceded in death by a son: Doug Blankenship. Judy was a loving wife, mother and grandmother.

Surviving are her husband of 51 years, Roy Blankenship; a son: Keith Blankenship and wife, Judy; a daughter: Connie Robertson and husband, Jeff; 3 grandchildren: Brian Blankenship, Ashley Blankenship and Amanda Howell and husband, Niles; 3 great grandchildren: Alexis Cooper, Riley Blankenship and Carly Howell all of Burnsville; a brother: Phillip Ogle and wife, Sandy, of Old Fort; 5 sisters: Marlene Davis, Shelby Allen and husband, Russell, Katherine Johnson and husband, Richard , and Jane Hensley all of Old Fort and Jackie Waters and husband, Mike, of Pigeon Forge, TN.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Friday in Pensacola Freewill Baptist Church of which she was a member. Revs. Troy McCurry and Keith Blankenship will officiate. Burial will be in the Garrett Ray Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 6 until 8:00 PM Thursday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home where the body will remain until taken to the church to lie in state 30 minutes prior to the service.

MAFRIE BANKS BANNER

Mafrie Banks Banner, 91, of Bolens Creek Community passed away Tuesday, May 27, 2008 at Mountain Manor Assisted Living. She was a daughter of the late Will and Julia Biggs Banks and the wife of Joe Banner who died in 1975. She was also preceded in death by a grandson: Randall Grindstaff ; a sister: Rhodica Ray; brothers: Kenneth and Virgil Banks. She was a member of Bolens Creek Baptist Church.

Surviving are four daughters: Glenna Gardner and husband, Gene, Norma Grindstaff and husband, Ronnie, and Marsha Gregory and husband, Clarence, all of Burnsville and Carolyn Ledford and husband, Charles, of Inman, SC; 6 grandchildren; 8 great grandchildren; a sister: Bobbye Ruth Peterson of Burnsville and a brother: Gene Banks and wife, Helen, of Asheville.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Thursday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home. Dr. Chris Morgan and Rev. Vernon Buchanan will officiate. Burial will be in the Holcombe Cemetery. Joel and Jerry Gardner, Bradley Grindstaff, Brian and Hunter Ledford and Dan Baumhardt will serve as pallbearers.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to Bolens Creek Baptist Church, Building Fund, Hospice of Yancey County or Gideons International.

The family wishes to express a special thanks to the staff of Mountain Manor for the care given to Mafrie.

MAX E. GILLIS

Max E. Gillis, 81, of Burnsville, died Friday, May 23, 2008 after a lingering illness. A native of Yancey County, he was a son of the late Gay and Vaughtie Angel Gillis. He was also preceded in death by a half sister: Chloe Fields of Weaverville. He retired from the U. S. Navy with 21 years of service as a GMMC then worked at Douglas Aircraft in Long Beach, CA until retiring due to ill health. He was of the Baptist faith.

He is survived by a brother: Cecil Gillis and wife, Juanita; a sister: Betty Stafford and husband, Roger, of Burnsville; 2 loving nephews: Philip Stafford of Spruce Pine and Greg Stafford of Camden, NC; 2 half nieces: Peggy Gentry and Joyce Lawrence of Weaverville.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Sunday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home. Rev. Nathan Silver will officiate. Burial will be in the Gillis Cemetery in Madison County.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

CLAUDE WHITSON

Claude Whitson, 73, of the Bowditch Community, went home to be with the Lord, Friday, May 23, 2008 at his home. A native of Yancey County, he was a son of the late Fred and Isby Gortney Whitson. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Kate Bailey, and a brother, Jay Lee Whitson. Claude was an US Army Veteran and was a member of Bowditch Union Church.

Surviving are his wife of 54 years, Willa Mae Freeman Whitson; two brothers: Arthur Whitson and wife, Frances, and Carl Whitson and wife, Earlene, of Green Mountain, 4 nieces and 2 nephews; 3 great nieces and 6 great nephews; 4 sisters-in-law and a brother-in-law.

Funeral services will be held at 2 P.M. Tuesday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home. Rev. Ronnie Whitson will officiate. Burial will be in the Woody Cemetery on Ridge Road.

The family will receive friends from 1 until 2 P.M. Tuesday at the funeral home.

DANIEL J. ROLAND

Daniel J. Roland, 73, of Pensacola, went home to be with the Lord, Wednesday, May 21, 2008. A native of Yancey County, he was a son of the late Lake B. and Euteva Calloway Roland. He was also preceded in death by a daughter: Anna Roland and a sister: Elizabeth Roberts.

Surviving are his wife: Violet Ford Roland; 3 daughters: Kathryn Roland of Fairview, Tammy McMahan of Pensacola and Anita Metcalf of Unicoi, TN; 2 sisters: Lucille McMahan of Burnsville and Esther Edwards of Cleveland, OH; 3 brothers: Charles Roland and J. B. Roland of Pensacola and Ellis Roland, Sr. of Cleveland, OH; 4 grandchildren: Anthony Pack of Burnsville, Johnathan Pack of Fairview, Violet and Rebecca Metcalf of Pensacola and 2 great grandsons: Tristin and Kyler Pack of Burnsville.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Saturday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home. Burial will be in the Roland Family Cemetery.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.

OLLIE PRESNELL

Ollie Presnell, 96, of Bolens Creek, passed away Sunday, May 18, 2008 at Brookside Rehabilitation and Care. A native of Yancey County, she was the daughter of the late Joe and Mary McMahan Mc Peters and the wife of Stanley Presnell who died in 1964. She was also preceded in death by her daughter, Ruby McIntosh, and son, Frank Presnell.

Surviving are her children: Jack Presnell of Fairbanks, Alaska, Norma Burnette and husband, Ray, Wanda Riddle and husband, Pearson Riddle, Jr., all of Burnsville; Paul “Budger” Presnell of Marion; 2 sisters: Ellen Jones of Burnsville and Vaughtie Simmons of Marion; 9 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren, and 2 great-great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM Tuesday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home. Burial will be in the McClurd Cemetery on Bolens Creek.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

MYRTLE GOUGE

Myrtle Gouge, 94, of Micaville, passed away Friday, May 16, 2008 in the Brian Center of Spruce Pine. A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late Roscoe and Lillie Buchanan Hughes and the wife of Till Gouge who died in 2005. She was also preceded in death by sisters: Maude Fox, Gertha Wyatt and Ruth Robinson. She was a retired employee of Micaville School cafeteria, which she loved her work and the many she worked with. Myrtle was a loving mother, a friend to many, a witness of God and her loving memories will remain.

Surviving are a daughter: Georgia Moffitt and husband, Brownlow of Bakersville; a grandson: Randy Boone of Micaville; a brother: Philmore Hughes and wife, Thurma, of Micaville and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 7:30 PM Sunday in the Morning Star Baptist Church of which she was a charter member. Rev. Billy Mitchell will officiate. A graveside service will be held at 11:00 AM Monday in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 6 until 7:30 PM prior to the service at the church.

Mother is now in “The Great Beyond” where she’ll “Never Grow Old!”

LARRY DEAN HONEYCUTT

Larry Dean Honeycutt, 64, of Burnsville, went home to be with the Lord, Monday, May 12, 2008 at the John F. Keever Solace Center. A native of Yancey County, he was a son of the late Dan and Hazel Byrd Honeycutt. He enjoyed woodworking, fishing and spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.

Surviving are his children: Amanda H. Powell, Dean Honeycutt, Robert Honeycutt and Rhonda H. Loftis and their spouses; a sister: Janice Blankenship and two brothers: Gerald and Bobby Honeycutt; 14 grandchildren and his former wife, Linda Honeycutt.

Funeral services will be held at 3:00 P.M. Thursday in the Youngs Chapel Free Will Baptist Church. The Revs. Bobby Revis and Dean Honeycutt will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.
