MICHAEL ADAM YOUNG

Michael Adam Young, 39, of Lincoln Park passed away Sunday, July 20, 2008 in Elizabethton, TN. A native of Yancey County, he was a son of Harold Young of Burnsville and Glenda Horton Leake of Asheville. Mike was a graduate of Mtn. Heritage High School where he was an outstanding athlete.

Surviving in addition to his parents are his step mother: Roberta Young of Burnsville; step father: Roy Leake of Asheville, a daughter: Charity Young of Burnsville; son: Trey Young of Old Fort; 4 sisters: Lisa Young of Weaverville, Kathy Jones and husband, Mark, of Georgia, Ruth Young-Waters and husband, Bryan, of Asheville and Michelle Lee of Burnsville; 2 brothers: Curtis Young of Asheville and Harold Young, Jr. of Burnsville and a host of nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins, relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Friday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home. Revs. Bill Whiteside, Edgar Waters and William Ray will officiate. Burial will be in the Marietta Atkins Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 12:30 until 2:00 PM prior to the service at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home, P. O. Box 325, Burnsville, NC 28714 to assist the family with funeral expenses.

DOROTHY LEE HICKS

Dorothy Lee Hicks, 82, of Newdale passed away Sunday, July 20, 2008 in the Memorial Campus of Mission Hospitals. A native of Mitchell County, she was a daughter of the late Merritt and Lilly Buchanan Young and the wife of Virgil Hicks who passed away in 1994 and her second husband, J. E. “Jake” Thomas who passed away in 2004. She was also preceded in death by a son: Scotty Hicks and a daughter-in-law: Elaine Hicks; a brother: Howard Young and a sister: Ruby Hall. Dorothy was a well-loved member of her community.

Surviving are 3 sons: Danny Hicks and wife, Linda, of Micaville, Dean Hicks and wife, Judie, of Newdale and Ken Hicks and wife, Janice, of Micaville; daughter-in-law: Olena Hicks of Newdale; 3 step daughters: Naomi Hoilman, Alice Haldeman, Becky Ayala and a stepson: David Thomas all of Newdale; 7 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren, step grandchildren and step great grandchildren; 2 brothers: Ted Young of Johnson City, TN and Larry Young of Oak Ridge, TN; 2 sisters: Joyce Vance of Newdale and Una Mae Allen of Burnsville; a special niece: Willa Carter of Atlanta, GA and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Wednesday in Martins Chapel United Methodist Church of which she was an active member. Rev. Tony Griffin will officiate. Burial will be in the Will Young Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 6 until 8:00 PM Tuesday at Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home where the body will remain until taken to the church to lie in state 30 minutes prior to the service. At other times, the family will be at her home.

Memorials may be made to the Martins Chapel United Methodist Church, 1555 State Hwy. 80 South, Burnsville, NC 28714.

MAX WHITSON

Max Whitson, 78, of Hickory Lane, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, July 15, 2008 at the Asheville VA Medical Center. A native of Yancey County, he was a son of the late Hobert and Cornelia Adkins Whitson. He was also preceded in death by brothers: Clate, Howard and Lawrence Whitson. Max was a Korean Conflict US Army Veteran and a retired employee of the Iron Workers Association of America.

Surviving are his wife of 28 years: Fern Boone Whitson; a sister: Faye Fox of Burnsville; 3 brothers: Niram Whitson of Johnson City, TN Raymond Whitson of Green Mountain and Hugh Whitson of Erwin, TN.

Funeral services will be held at 2:30 PM Thursday in the West Burnsville Baptist Church of which he was a member. Rev. Ricky Ray will officiate. Burial will be in the West Burnsville Church Cemetery with military graverites conducted by Sgt. E. L. Randolph, Chapter 57 DAV.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.

WADE HOLLOWAY

Wade Holloway, 77, of Big Creek, passed away Monday, July 14, 2008 at the home of his son. A native of Yancey County, he was a son of the late Bob and Etta Warrick Holloway. Wade was a US Army Korean Conflict Veteran. He was the husband of Geraldine Engle Holloway who died in 1990. He retired with the Yancey County School System having served as Principal of Bee Log and Clearmont Schools. Wade was very active in the Democratic Party in Yancey County.

Surviving are a son: Steve Holloway and wife, Talina, of Marion; a daughter: Cathy Holloway of Green Mountain; 3 grandchildren: Brandon, Stephen and Willa and a sister: June Phillips of Green Creek.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM Thursday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home. Rev. Marvin Silvers will officiate. Burial will be in the Holloway Cemetery

The family will receive friends from 6 until 8:00 PM Wednesday at the funeral home.

ROE BILL EDWARDS

Roe Bill Edwards, 74, of Hendersonville passed away Saturday, July 12, 2008 at The Elizabeth House in Flat Rock. A native of Yancey County, he was a son of the late Latt and Emma Jane Crain Edwards and the husband of Maudie Hensley Edwards who died in 2005.

Surviving are three daughters: Oma Gail Edwards of East Flat Rock, Rita Hall of Greenville, SC and Pam Edwards of Hendersonville; four sons: Billy and Gus Edwards of Marion, Latt Edwards of Hendersonville and Mark Edwards of Tuxedo; a sister; Heidi Rice of Mars Hill; two brothers: Lee Hensley of Greenville and Molt Edwards of Hendersonville; 25 grandchildren and 24 great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be 2:00 PM Wednesday in Simms Fork Baptist Church. The Rev. James Norman will officiate. Burial will be in the Hensley Family Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8:00 PM Tuesday at Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home, where the body will remain until taken to the church to lie in state 30 minutes prior to the service.

FRANK McINTOSH

Frank McIntosh, 85, of Union Mills, passed away Wednesday July 9, 2008, as a result of a house fire. A native of Yancey County, he was a son of the late Zeb and Ruth King McIntosh. He was also preceded in death by a sister: Enide McIntosh; and, brothers: Jack and Clay McIntosh. His wife, Beverly Thompson McIntosh, passed away in the fire also. Frank was a World War II Army veteran and a retired employee of Chrysler Corporation.

Surviving are his brother: Wintz McIntosh and wife, Eloise; sister-in-law: Irene McIntosh; all of Burnsville, and, several nieces.

Funeral services will be held at 3 P. M. Tuesday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home. The Revs. A. J. Moore and Shane Cassida will officiate. Burial will be in the Proffitt Cemetery on Hardscrabble Road.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

MARTHA WILLIS HARRISON

Martha Willis Harrison, 68, of Celo, went home to be with the Lord Saturday, July 5, 2008 at her home. A native of Mitchell County, she was the daughter of the late Burl and Helen Brown Willis. She was the wife of Glen Harrison who died in 2004. She was preceded in death by a brother, Burl Ray Willis and a sister, Nell Sue Fox. She was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving are 3 sons: James, Kenny, and Mark Harrison all of Burnsville; 2 daughters: Juanita Willis of Spruce Pine and Marquita Amodio of Bakersville; 5 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren; 3 sisters: Connie Bowman of Bakersville, Margaret Biddix of Murfreesboro, TN and Ann Milner of Carthage, NC.

Funeral Services will be held at 8 PM Tuesday in the chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home. Rev. Charlie Carroway will officiate. Graveside Services will be held Wednesday in the Autrey Cemetery at South Estatoe Baptist Church.

The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 PM Tuesday at the funeral home.

DAVID WEBER

David Louis Weber, 48, of Burnsville, passed away Friday, July 4, 2008, at his home from a heart attack after a life long battle with muscular dystrophy. A native of Dunedin, FL, he was a son of the late Theadore and Virginia Weber. He was also preceded in death by his father-in-law: Charles K. Boone. He was a former employee of OMC, and was a loving and dedicated husband and father.

Surviving are his wife of 24 years: Deborah Boone Weber; 2 sons: Kurt and Shane Weber; 2 daughters: Sarah and Natalie Weber, all of the home; a sister: Margie Weber of Palm Harbor, FL; and, mother-in-law: Jewel Bernice Boone of Clearwater, FL.

Funeral services will be held at 7PM Monday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home. The Rev. Wayne Braswell will officiate. Burial will be at 11AM Tuesday in the Boone Cemetery on Plum Branch.

The family will receive friends from 6 until 7PM prior to the service at the funeral home.

LEROY HUGHES

Leroy Hughes, 70, of the Bowditch Community, passed away Thursday, July 3, 2008, after a short illness. A native of Yancey County, he was the son of the late Fonze A. and Frances Bailey Hughes. He was also preceded in death by 4 sisters: Margaret Azel, Helen Wilson, Ruth Thomas and Shirley Rhyne; and, 1 brother: Ralph Hughes. Leroy was a U.S. Army veteran.

Surviving are his wife of 47 years: Jeanette Fox Hughes; 2 sons: Randy Hughes and wife, Beth, and Nathan Hughes of the home; a daughter: Shannon Hoilman and husband, Randy, all of Micaville; 6 grandchildren; 3 sisters: Katherine Moore of Stanley, Mildred Robinson of Burnsville and Martha Burleson of Spruce Pine; and, 6 brothers: Max, Jack, Charles, Mike, and Rodney Hughes, all of Burnsville, and Larry Hughes of Brevard.

Funeral services will be held at 3PM Saturday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home. The Rev. Ronnie Gouge will officiate. Burial will be in the James Fox Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 1 until 3PM prior to the service at the funeral home.

KATHY SKY NIELSEN

Kathy Sky Nielsen, 59, much loved and appreciated artist in Yancey County, translated peacefully in her home in the presence of her family and friends.

She is survived by her husband, Bob Nielsen, a daughter: Ananda Nordquist of Asheville; granddaughter: Celeste Nordquist and brothers: Kevin and Stanley Kulhawy.

A celebration of life service will be held at 2:00 P.M. Saturday, July 12, 2008 in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.

With Kathy’s love of nature, if so guided, plant a flower or tree in her honor.
