PAULINE BUCHANAN ROBINSON PRESNELL

Pauline Buchanan Robinson Presnell, 92, of Pleasant Gap, went home to be with the Lord, Monday, October 20, 2008 in the Brian Center Health and Rehabilitation of Spruce Pine.  A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late Charles and Mary Presnell Buchanan.  She was the wife of the late Lawrence Robinson and Virgil Presnell.  She was also preceded in death by brothers:  W. O. Buchanan and wife, Jane, Paul and wife, Zella, Buchanan, Brown Buchanan and Mack Buchanan; and sisters:  Nora Davis and husband, Charlie, and Ola Mae Sparks and husband, Roy.  She was a former member of Pleasant Gap Baptist Church where she was the song leader.  She was a member of Double Island Baptist Church.  Pauline loved to garden, can and cook and care for her friends and neighbors.

Surviving are her son:  Ronnie Robinson and wife, Hilda; 2 grandchildren:  Dawn Renea Robinson and Ronnie Robinson, II, all of the Pleasant Gap Community; and a sister-in-law:  Mae Buchanan.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM Thursday in the chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Revs. Ricky Woody and Billy Mitchell will officiate.  She will be laid to rest beside her husband, Lawrence, in the Fred Young Cemetery at Pleasant Gap.

The family will receive friends from 6 until 8:00 P.M. Wednesday at the funeral home.

RUBYE LOWE HALL

Rubye Lowe Hall, 89, of Charlotte passed away Monday, Oct. 20, 2008 in Kennesaw, GA. A native of Spartanburg, SC, she was a daughter of the late Landrum and Bessie McAbee Lowe and wife of George Ralph Hall who died in 2007. She was a retired teacher and a homemaker.

Surviving are a son Jeff Hall and his wife, Arian, of Kennesaw.

Funeral services will be held at 2 P. M. Friday in the chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home. Rev. Wes Sharpe will officiate. Burial will be in Academy Cemetery.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

LAWRENCE BUCHANAN

Lawrence “Buck” Buchanan, 78, formerly of Newdale, died Sunday, October 19, 2008, at Park Ridge Hospital.  A native of Yancey County, he was a son of the late Kelse and Mamie Saylor Buchanan.  He was a U.S. Army Korean Conflict Veteran and a Purple Heart recipient.

Surviving are a daughter:  Teresa Harrison and husband, Bobby; and, a son:  Kenny Lee Buchanan, all of Candler; 2 grandchildren:  Tanya Williams and husband, Andy, and John Chasteen; a sister:  Azalene Fowler of Milton, FL; and, a brother:  J. B. Buchanan and wife, Patty Sue, of Candler; 4 nephews:  Mike J. Buchanan, Thomas M. Buchanan, Tony Ray Lassiter and George C. Lassiter; and, a niece:  Pamela D. Lassiter.

Funeral services will be held at 2PM Thursday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Burial will be in the Will Young Cemetery.

The family will receive friends 1 hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

CECIL MILLER

Cecil Miller, 81, of Miller Hill Road in the Ramseytown Community, went home to be with Jesus, Wednesday, October 15, 2008.  He was a son of the late Noah and Bessie Hensley Miller.  He was preceded in death by his sister:  Nola Miller and 5 infant brothers and sisters.  Cecil was a retired employee of Banco Lumber and a member of Millers Chapel Freewill Baptist Church.  He was a 60-year member of Bald Creek Masonic Lodge #397 A.F&A.M.

Surviving are two sisters:  Lida Phillips and Mollie Miller of Burnsville.  Several nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Saturday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Rev. Roy Whitson will officiate.  Burial will be in the Miller Hill Cemetery with Masonic graverites conducted by Bald Creek Masonic Lodge #397.

The family will receive friends from 6 until 8:00 P.M. Friday at the funeral home.  At other times, the family will be at the home of Lida Phillips on Bloody Fork Road.

PAUL S. BANKS

Paul S. Banks, 86, of the Banks Creek Community, passed away Tuesday, October 14, 2008, at his home.  A native of Yancey County, he was a son of the late Hugh J. and Belle McMahan Banks.   Paul was also preceded in death by sisters:  Jennie Banks and Helen Anglin; and, brothers:  Oscar, George, Lester and Roger Banks.  He was a WWII U.S. Marine Veteran.

Surviving are his wife:  Icie Aldridge Banks; 2 sons:  Marvin Ray Banks and Paul Stanley Banks; and a daughter:  Janice Boone, all of Burnsville; 7 grandchildren; 7 great grandchildren; and, several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 8PM Thursday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  The Rev. Sherrill Whitson will officiate.  A graveside service will be held at 11AM Friday in Banks Cemetery on Banks Creek.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

ELORA ANGEL

Elora Griffith Angel, 79, of Conover, passed away Friday, October 3, 2008, at Catawba Valley Medical Center.  A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late Ernest and Ida Peterson Griffith.  She was also preceded in death by a sister:  Elena Bartlet.

Surviving are her husband of 60 years:  Carroll W. Angel; two daughters:  Dainne Vickery and husband, Michael, of Hampstead, NC and Sheila Nelson and husband, Chip, of Asheboro; a granddaughter:  Courtney Vickery of Charlotte; and, two sisters:  Eloise Edwards of Nashville, TN and Elma Ryan of Johnson City, TN.

Funeral services will be held at 2PM Monday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Burial will be in the Holcombe Cemetery.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

JOHN B. TRIPP

John B. Tripp, 80, of Little Switzerland, NC, died on Thursday, October 2, 2008, at his home after a long illness. A native of Ft. Lauderdale, FL, he was the son of the late Tracy and Ruby Ashelford Tripp.

Surviving are his wife of 35 years:  Ruth Elizabeth Tripp; daughter:  Dr. Hollis Tripp Burggraf of Denver, CO; sons:  David E. Tripp and wife, Francoise, of Tallahassee, FL, J. Kelly Tripp and wife, Karen, of Wildwood, MO, Robert W. Heuer and Jonathan C. Jones of Lambertville, NJ; six grandchildren; one great-granddaughter;  and, three brothers:  J. Tracey Tripp of Paradise, CA, Winton P. Tripp of Bainbridge Island, WA and Eugene A. Tripp of Fort Collins, CO.

After graduation from the University of Pennsylvania Wharton School of Finance, he proudly served as an officer in the U.S. Navy during the Korean Conflict.  Following his military service, John was employed by IBM.  He served as a school board member in Broward County, FL, was for many years an Information Technologist and Financial Consultant for the Eastern band of Cherokee Indians, the Dora Reed Center and the Qualla Boundry Head Start Programs and Internal Auditor for the Cherokee Boys Club until his retirement in 2004.  John also volunteered his time and talents to the WNC AIDS Project, Loving Foods Resources in Asheville, Meals on Wheels, and the early Hospice program in Yancey County.

No local services are planned and internment of his ashes will be in New Washington, Ohio and Greppen, Switzerland at a later date.

If desired, memorials may be made in his honor to Hospice of Mitchell County, P.O. Box 38, Spruce Pine, NC 28777, whose services were a great comfort to Mr. Tripp and his loved ones. Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home is assisting the Tripp family.

MONELLE PONDER

Monelle Ponder, 89, of Burnsville, passed away Wednesday, October 1, 2008, at Brookside Rehabilitation and Care.  A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late Sam and Bertha Ray Gregory, and the wife of Leslie Ponder who died in 1979.  She was also preceded in death by a sister:  Relda Robinson; and, brothers:  Ralph, Frank, Clyde and Grover Gregory.  Monelle was a member of Bethel Baptist Church.

Surviving are daughters:  Penny Ponder and Cathy Griggs and husband, Darryl; sons:  Earl Ponder and wife, Beverly, and Donald Ponder and wife, Beth, all of Burnsville; grandchildren:  Michelle Ponder, Candi Fox and husband, Mike, Cindy and Casey Griggs and Scottie Laws and wife, Laura; and, great grandchildren:  Laura and Nathan Hilemon, Maci Drew Fox, and Brittany and Jessica Greene.

A graveside service will be held at 11AM Friday in Bethel Baptist Church Cemetery.  The Rev. Jerry Shelton will officiate.

In honoring Mrs. Ponder’s wishes, there will be no visitation at the funeral home; however, the family will receive friends at the home of Earl Ponder, 2250 Jacks Creek Road, Burnsville, NC.

ELMA ROBINSON

Elma Robinson 89, of the Double Island Community, went home to be with the Lord Saturday, September 27, 2008, at Spruce Pine Brian Center.  A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late Jake and Lizzie Hall Robinson.  Elma devoted her life to caring for her family.  She was member of Double Island Baptist Church.  She was preceded in death by brothers:  George, Lawrence, Fred, Bill, Robert and Ray Robinson;  sisters:  Viola Hoilman and husband, Wyatt, Faye Young and Beulah Belle Robinson. 

Surviving are 2 brothers:  Arthur E. Robinson and wife, Aileene, of Finksburg, MD and Joseph Cecil Robinson of Burnsville; 20 nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral Services will be held at 3:00 PM Monday in the chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Revs. Ricky Woody and Billy Mitchell will officiate.  Burial will be in the Double Island Baptist Church Cemetery.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

VERNIE WILLIAMS

Vernie Williams 72, of Scronce Creek, passed away Friday, September 26, 2008 in the Spruce Pine Brian Center.   A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late Woodrow and Pansy Estep Hensley.   She was preceded in death by a daughter: Nadine Joy Williams. 

Surviving are her husband of 54 years, Howard Williams; a son: Larry Williams of Burnsville; grandchildren: Jamie Ayers, Robert, Randall, Melinda and Santana Carroll, Crystal, Karen and Michael Williams and Raymond Ayers; 10 great grandchildren; 3 sisters: Eloise Davis, Hazel Hensley and Judy Edwards all of Burnsville.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM Tuesday in Mount Pleasant Baptist Church of which she was a member.   Rev. Jerry Shelton will officiate.  Burial will be in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
