ETHEL MANEY

 Ethel Maney, age 94, of the Indian Creek community, went home to be with the Lord Monday, September 14, 2009, at Brookside Rehabilitation and Care.  She was preceded in death by her parents:  Charlie and May Ball Maney; brothers:  Kenny, Oliver and wife, Bernice, Hunter and wife, Beatrice; brothers-in-law:  Al McSwiggen and Chandler Longmire.  Ethel lived her entire life in the Indian Creek community.  She loved her family and enjoyed taking care of them. 

 

Surviving are sisters:  Alice McSwiggen of Bel Air, MD, Emogene Longmire of Henderson, NC, Pearl Day and husband, Bill, of Lula, GA; a brother:  Claude Maney and wife, Elli, of Anchorage, AK; and, several nieces and nephews.

 

Funeral services will be held at 3PM Thursday in Indian Creek Baptist Church, of which she was a life long member and held several offices over the years.  The Rev. Philip Garland will officiate.  Burial will follow in the Maney Cemetery on Indian Creek.

 

The family will receive friends 1 hour prior to the service at the church.

FAYE RAY YOUNG

Faye Ray Young, 76, of Blue Rock went to be with the Lord, Monday, September 14, 2009 in Mission Hospital Memorial Campus.  A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late Barnett and Dorothy Boone Ray.  Faye was a faithful Christian servant in her church and community and a loving wife, mother and grandmother.


Surviving are her husband of 55 years: Kenneth Young; 3 children:  Cathy McCracken and husband, David, of Weaverville, Deborah Trexler and husband, Tim,  Mark Young and wife, Wanda, of Burnsville; 7 grandchildren:  Ricky, Nataya, Dustin, Adam, Kenny, Marcus and Jackson; 2 great grandchildren:  Isabelle and Easton; 4 sisters:  Violet Harris, Lois Loftis, Wilma Huskins all of Burnsville and Willie Dale Hughes of Morganton.


Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday in the First Baptist Church of which she was a member and Sunday School Teacher.  Rev. Richard Muri will officiate.  Burial will be in the Cornelius Ray Cemetery.


The family will receive friends from 12:30 until 2:00 at the church prior to the service.

MAE SPARKS

Mae Sparks, 92, of Celo, went home to be with the Lord, Saturday, September 12, 2009, at Brookside Rehabilitation and Care.  A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late Charlie and Maggie Gibbs Carroway and the wife of Clarence A. Sparks, who died in 2000.  She was also preceded in death by a daughter Sabra McNamara and sons Donald and Claude Sparks.  Mae was a member of Celo United Methodist Church.

 

Surviving are grandchildren: Travis Sparks and wife Raegan and Daryl Sparks and wife Candace of Burnsville; Kimberly Harper and husband Marcus of Lake Lure; Mike Sparks and wife Rachel of Mechanicsville, MD; and Greg Sparks and wife Candy of Bakersfield, Calif; 5 great grandchildren: Alyssa, Dakota, Hunter, Cadence and Sawyer Sparks; daughters-in-law: Joy Powell of Mars Hill and Bette Sue Sparks of Mechanicsville and a son-in-law: Norbert McNamara of Waterford, Calif.

 

Funeral services will be held at 8 P. M. Tuesday in the Chapel of Holcombe Bros. Funeral Home.  Rev. Charlie Carroway will officiate.  A graveside service will be held at 11 A.M. Wednesday in the Carroway Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 P. M. Tuesday, at the funeral home and at other times will be at her home in Celo.

CHARLIE HENSLEY

Charlie Hensley, 56,  of Fox Creek, went to Heaven, Friday, September 11, 2009.  A native of Yancey county, he was a son of James Hensley of Fox Creek and the late Rachel Edwards Hensley.

 

Surviving in addition to his father are a daughter: Tammy Hensley and husband Morris of Green Mountain; a son: Adam Hensley and wife Juanita of Burnsville; a step granddaughter: Alenia Hugdins of Burnsville; 4 sisters: Billie Jean Fox and husband J. C. and Christine Ponder and husband Delane of Fox Creek; Jerline Shepherd and husband Victor of Chandler Branch and Betty Marie Canipe of Green Mountain.

 

Funeral services will be held at 8 P. M. Sunday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Rev. Perry Norton will officiate.  A graveside service will be held at 11 A. M. Monday in the James Hensley Family Cemetery on Fox Creek.

 

The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 P. M. Sunday at the funeral home.

FANNIE E. BENNETT

Fannie E. Bennett, 90, formerly of Burnsville, passed away Friday, September 11, 2009, in a Knoxville, TN Health Care Facility.  A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late Ruben and Etta Renfro Peterson and the wife of S. J. Bennett who died in 1986.  She was also preceded in death by a daughter:  Evalene Honeycutt Cooper; sisters:  Minnie Howell, Lillian Cooper, Kathleen Demary, Pauline Reynolds and Juanita Cornett; and, brothers:  Roscoe and John Peterson.  Fannie was a member of West Burnsville Baptist Church.

 

Surviving are a son:  Morris Bennett and wife, Linda, of Knoxville, TN; 4 grandchildren:  Tammy Putman and husband, Boyce, and Chris Honeycutt and wife, Beth, all of Greenville, SC, Kim Gunn of Nashville, TN and Amy Blackburn of Knoxville; and, a brother:  Frank Peterson and wife, Eva Jo, of Burnsville.

 

Funeral services will be held at 7:30 P.M. Monday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  The Rev. Ricky Ray will officiate.  A graveside service will be held at 10:30 A.M. Tuesday, September 15, 2009, in West Burnsville Church Cemetery.

 

The family will receive friends from 6 until 7:30 P.M. Monday prior to the service at the funeral home.

LEROY RIDDLE

Leroy Riddle, 64, of the Cane River community, died Sunday, August 30, 2009.  A native of Yancey County, he was a son of Leatha McIntosh Riddle of Burnsville and the late France Riddle.  He was also preceded in death by a brother:  Jimmie Riddle.  Leroy was an employee of Mountain Air.  He was a beloved son, brother and uncle.

 

Surviving, in addition to his mother, are 5 sisters:  Shirley Linville and husband, George, of Mechanicsville, VA, Jessie Sowder and husband, Charles and Christine Humphrey and husband, Johnnie Lee, of Baltimore, MD, Thanna Smith and husband, Bobby, of Mocksville, and Judy Smith and husband, Paul, of Sparta, TN; 2 brothers:  Bennie Riddle and wife, Maurine, and Gary Riddle and wife, Janice, of Burnsville; and, several nieces and nephews.

 

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Sunday, September 20, 2009 in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Rev. Stacy Elkins will officiate.  Burial will be in the McIntosh Cemetery on Langford Branch.

The family will receive friends from 4 until 6:00 PM Saturday, September 19, 2009 at the funeral home.
 

REV. BENNIE PHILLIPS

Rev. Bennie Phillips, 64, of the Ramseytown Community went home to be with the Lord, Thursday, September 10, 2009 at his home.  A native of Yancey County, he was a son of Thelma Adkins Phillips of Burnsville and the late Rev. Niram Phillips.  He was also preceded in death by a daughter:  Sandra Lee Phillips.  He was owner-operator of Burnsville Steel Erectors since 1973, Pastor of Paint Gap Baptist Church for 10 years and Pastor of Byrd’s Chapel Baptist Church since 1991.


Surviving in addition to his mother are his wife of 40 years, Kaye Franklin Phillips; a daughter:  Emily “Bunny” Edwards and husband, Luke, of Mars Hill; a son:  Rev. Raymond Phillips and wife, Amanda, of Burnsville; 2 grandchildren:  Jacob and Naomi; a brother:  Kenneth Phillips and wife, Shirley, of Erwin, TN and a sister:  Iva Lee Ricker and husband, John, of Shelby.


Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Revs. Raymond Phillips, Royce Ball and Philip Garland will officiate.  Burial will be in the Henry Howard Cemetery on Piney Hill Road.

TRULA PATE

Trula Pate, 82, of Green Mountain passed away Thursday, September 10, 2009 at Brookside Rehabilitation and Care.  A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late Dempsey and Prejetta Hunter Bryant and the wife of Naff Pate who died in 1988.  She was also preceded in death by a son, Jerry L. Pate.


Surviving are a son:  Jim Pate of Green Mountain; two grandchildren:  Rachel Boone and husband, Bradley of Burnsville and Preston Pate of Green Mountain.


Funeral services will be held at 7:00 p.m. Saturday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Rev. Noah Hughes will officiate.  A graveside service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday in Peterson Hill Cemetery.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

ALESSANDRA NICOLE EFFLER

Alessandra Nicole “Alex” Effler, 4-year-old daughter of William and Girlie Codillo Effler of Busick, passed away Monday, September 7, 2009 in Mission Hospital as a result of an automobile accident.  She was born November 16, 2004 in Manila, Philippines.  She was a granddaughter of the late Troy and Leota Effler.


Surviving in addition to her parents, are her maternal grandparents:  Francisca and Gregorio Codillo of Manila, Philippines; aunts and uncles:  Enrico, Mary Ann, Rolando Michael, Maricel and Joan all of the Philippines, Jewel and Sonny Autrey of Busick; cousins:  Clay Autrey of Busick, Clint Autrey and wife, Rebecca, and son, Emerson, of Swannanoa, Erica, Harold Loyd, John Philip, Honey Lyn, Ryan Christian, Bryan, Nico, Carlo, Aedan all of the Philippines; a  special great aunt:  Gertie McEntyre and daughter, Shirley Tolley; great uncle:  John Ray Effler and Raymond Effler of Marion and special friends:  Stanley Wilson, Richard Todd, Viola Robinson and Gail Effler.


Funeral services will be held at 8:00 P.M. Thursday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Revs. Forrest Westall, Kenneth Forbes and Charles Willis will officiate.  Graveside services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Friday in the Robinson Cemetery on Rock Creek.

The family will receive friends from 6 until 8:00 P.M. prior to the service at the funeral home.

EZRA HOYETT FRANKLIN

Ezra Hoyett Franklin, 77, of David Park Drive, Burnsville, passed away Saturday, September 5, 2009 at Charles George VA Medical Center in Asheville.  A native of Yancey County, he was a son of the late John Floyd and Belle Edwards Franklin.  He was also preceded in death by a son, Homer Franklin, sisters: Faye McCurry and Virginia Lee McCurry and brothers: J. C. and Ralph Franklin.  Hoyett was a US Army Korean Conflict veteran and a retired employee of Henredon Furniture Company.

Surviving are two sons: Robert Franklin and wife Alice of Newland and Melvin Franklin of Burnsville; five grandchilren, three step grandchildren, six great grandchildren and two aunts: Vicie Franklin Testerman of Asheville and Edith Blankenship Franklin of Weaverville.

Funeral services will be held at 1 P. M. Wednesday, September 9, 2009 in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Rev. Denver Styles will officiate. Burial will follow in the Piney Hill Church Cemetery.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funearl home and at other times will be at the home of Robert Franklin in Newland.
