CHARLES MICHAEL PHILLIPS

Charles Michael Phillips, 57, of Taylors, SC, passed away Monday, June 30, 2008 in Simpsonville, SC. A native of Buncombe County, he had been a resident of Taylors for over 25 years. He was the son of Leathia Riddle Phillips of Taylors and the late Charles D. Phillips.

Surviving in addition to his mother are two daughters: Kimberly Phillips and Michelle Phillips of Jacksonville, FL; a sister: Patricia Hannah of Clyde; a brother: James D. Phillips of Taylors and 4 grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Friday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home. Burial will be in the McMahan Cemetery on Rocky Fork.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

DANIEL PATRICK GILBERT

Daniel Patrick Gilbert, 24, of Lawrenceville, GA went home to be with the Lord, Sunday, June 29, 2008 as a result of injuries received in an automobile accident. A native of Georgia, he was a grandson of the late Isaac and Lyda Fox of Burnsville and Bud and Ethel Gilbert of Ohio. Daniel was a store manager of Auto Zone in Suwanee, GA.

Daniel was the only child of Gail Fox Gilbert of Lawrenceville and Richard Gilbert of Winder, GA. He is also survived by his stepmother, Dale Gilbert of Winder.

Funeral services will be held at 3:00 PM Thursday in the West Burnsville Church of God. Rev. Gary Helton will officiate. Burial will be in the Wilson Cemetery on John Henry Road.

The family will receive friends from 1 until 3:00 PM prior to the service at the church.

STEVEN MARK McMAHAN

Mark McMahan, 31, of the Bowditch Community, passed away Sunday, June 29, 2008, at Blue Ridge Regional Hospital. A native of Yancey County, he was the son of Tom McMahan and fiancé, Gail Byrd, of Burnsville, and Janie Marsh Stanbery and husband, David, of Boone. He was an employee of Tri-County Granite and Stone. Mark was also preceded in death by his grandfather: Alvis McMahan.

Surviving, in addition to his parents, are two brothers: Bryan McMahan and wife, Tami, and Jason Ray and wife, Somer; paternal grandmother: Ouida McMahan, all of Burnsville; maternal grandmother: Mary Sue Marsh of Sylvania, GA; maternal grandfather: Bobby Marsh of Micaville; great grandmother: Irene Marsh of Micaville; two nieces; a nephew; and, several aunts, uncles and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 8PM Wednesday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home. A graveside service will be held at 10AM Thursday in Bowditch Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 6 until 8PM Wednesday at the funeral home.

MARGARET JEANNE JOY WILSON

Margaret Jeanne Joy Wilson, 64, of Newdale, went home to be with the Lord, Wednesday, June 25, 2008. She was born May 1, 1944. She had been a resident of Florida most of her life. She was a daughter of Lois Prochaska of Mineral Wells, W. VA and the late Thomas Joy. She was also preceded in death by her stepmother, Dorothy Joy; a son: Jerry Morin and a brother: Thomas T. Joy.

Surviving are her husband: Leonard Frank Wilson; 2 daughters: Jennifer Kreinick and husband, Bobby, of Tampa, FL; Beverly Lynn Wilson and husband, Dennis Silver, of Micaville; 2 sons: George Morin of Tampa and Frankie Wilson of Newdale; 7 grandchildren: Jacob, Joshua Austin, Sierra, Jeramiah, Isaac and Ethan; 2 sisters: Martha Bell of Elizabeth City, W. VA, Mary Tabler of Myrtle Beach and 1 brother: Norman Joy of Parltow, VA.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Friday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home. Rev. Frank Wyatt will officiate. Burial will be in the Faith Fellowship Church Cemetery.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

FRED PETERSON

Fred Peterson, 72, of Burnsville went home to be with the Lord, Sunday, June 22, 2008 at the Nursing Center at Oak Summit in Winston-Salem. A native of Yancey County, he was a son of the late Criss and Birdella Cooper Peterson. He was also preceded in death by a sister: Grace Difleece and brothers: Homer, Brite, J. B., Zeph and C. R. Peterson. Fred was a retired floor finisher.

Surviving are his wife of 51 years: Brenda Hopson Peterson; a daughter: Sherry Troxell and husband, Chris, and a son: Tim Peterson all of Burnsville; a daughter: Jamie Peterson of Columbia, SC; 2 grandchildren: Jason Troxell and Alicia Troxell; a great grandson: Gabriel Troxell; 2 sisters: Ethel Boone of Woodstock, GA and Oma Peterson of Burnsville; and a brother: Jeff Peterson of Racine, WV.

Funeral services will be held at 8:00 PM Tuesday in the chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home. Revs. Dayton Lewis, Stanley Hopson and Matthew Hopson will officiate. A graveside service will be held at 11:00 AM Wednesday in the Spring Branch Cemetery on Gillespie Road.

The family will receive friends from 6 until 8:00 PM Tuesday prior to the service at the funeral home.

EVANGELINE VICTORIA COFFILL RESTALL

Eve Restall, 91,passed away Thursday, June 19, 2008, at Mountain Manor Assisted Living. A native of Bronx, NY, she had lived in Montgomery, NY for 47 years before moving to Burnsville in 1999. She was the daughter of the late Francis Coffill and Elizabeth Lotz Coffill Wright. Also preceding her in death were her husband: William “Bill” A. Restall; her sister: Violet Coffill; brothers: Everett and Delbert “Buddy” Coffill; her daughter: Carol Lynn Restall; and, her grandson: Kenneth Swanson.

Surviving are her son: William “Bill” G. Restall; granddaughter: Melanie S. Restall Keller-Hull and husband, Brad, and their children: Mariah and Montana Keller and Kyle and Skye Hull of Burnsville; granddaughter: Victoria L. Restall Zitney and husband, Jim, and their children: Lauren and Michelle Zitney of Burnsville; and, her grandson: Richard W. Restall of Marion, NC.

The family wishes to thank Dr. Jeffery Polgar of Blue Ridge Medical Center, Mountain Manor Assisted Living, and Hospice of Yancey County for all their support and care of Eve in the final months of her life.

RUBY DEYTON JONES

Ruby Deyton Jones, 83, of Green Mountain passed away Wednesday, June 18, 2008 at Mountain Manor Assisted Living. A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late Charlie and Mollie Belle Riddle Deyton. She was also preceded in death by a son: Terry Jones, 2 sisters: Grace Jean Deyton and Anna Laws and brothers: Charlie, Cecil, R.B. and Fate Deyton. Ruby was a member of Covy Rock Freewill Baptist Church.

Surviving are two sons: Matt Jones and wife, Pat, of Burnsville and Bernie Jones and wife, Mae, of Spruce Pine; a brother: Frank Deyton of Green Mountain, three sisters: Beuna Deyton Edwards and Irene McKinney of Burnsville and Zelda McKinney of Valdese; 6 grandchildren; 7 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 8:00 P.M. Friday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home. Revs. Bud Edwards and Russell Hughes will officiate. A graveside service will be held at 11:00 A.M. Saturday in the Deyton-Riddle Cemetery on Brush Creek.

The family will receive friends from 6:30 until 8:00 P.M. prior to the service at the funeral home.

MARY ALICE MANEY

Mary Alice Maney, 88, went to her heavenly home on Wednesday June 18, 2008 at the John F. Keever Solace Center in Asheville. She was a resident of Burnsville and Black Mountain. She was preceded in death by her grandparents: Mr. and Mrs. W. N. Horton, her parents: John Wesley and Essie Horton Maney, her husband: L. C. Maney and two brothers: Jack and Lee Maney. Mary Alice finished high school in three years and went to Appalachian State Teachers College in Boone. She worked for the Singer Company in the Kearfott Division for 30 years. She was very proud of her ancestry and was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution.

She is survived by four sisters: Annice Maney of Burnsville, Grace Spires of Asheville, Mafra Robinson of Burnsville and Margaret Clarke of California and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 3:00 P.M. Sunday in the Paint Gap Presbyterian Church. Rev. Don Blankenship will officiate. Burial will be in the Horton Hill Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 2 until 3:00 P.M. at the church prior to the service.

The family wishes to thank Dr. John J. Kelly and Dr. and Mrs. Reid Taylor for all their support.

GLENN FOX

Glenn Fox, 81, of the Fox Creek Community of Yancey County, went home to be with the Lord, Wednesday, June 11, 2008 at his home. A native of Yancey County, he was a son of the late Joe Frank and Nellie Foster Fox. He was also preceded in death by sisters: Delzie Miller and Faye E. Hall and a brother: Lemmie Fox. He was a WWII Army Air Force Veteran. Glenn was a retired employee of Bell Telephone Construction and a member of Ivy Gap Baptist Church.

Surviving are two sisters: Thelma Hylemon of Mars Hill and Emma Hilemon of Asheville.

Funeral services will be held at 2 P.M. Saturday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home. Rev. Stephen Glover will officiate. Burial will be in the Fox Cemetery.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

SAMUEL L. SERAN

Samuel L. Seran, 82, of Burnsville passed away Thursday, June 05, 2008 in Brookside Rehab & Care. A native of Salem, NJ, he was a son the late Samuel L. and Elizabeth Johnson Seran. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Forris Seran. A WWII Navy Veteran, he was a member of the American Legion Post No. 11, Frederick, Maryland. Sam was a former Manager of the Army Store of Burnsville and a member of Crabtree Baptist Church.

Surviving are his wife: Faye Silver Seran; children: Michael Seran of Pennsville, NJ, Wendy Ewing of Soloman, KS, Gregory Leikus of Cascade, MD and Lisa Leikus of Louisville, KY; 11 grandchildren; 9 great grandchildren; 2 sisters: Hazel Fair of Pennsville, NJ and Lois Henderson of Houston, TX.

Funeral services will be held at 7:30 PM Monday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home. Revs. Dale Banks and Joe Bennett will officiate. A graveside service will be held at 11:00 AM Tuesday in the Crabtree Baptist Church Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 5:30 until 7:30 PM prior to the service at the funeral home.
