MARIA CARRILLO RAMOS

Maria Guadalupe Carrillo Ramos, 83, of Burnsville, died Saturday, November 8, 2008 from injuries received from an automobile accident.   She was a native of Cheran, Michoacan, Mexico.

Survivors include her son, Manuel Sanchez Carrillo of Burnsville, grandchildren and other family members.

Funeral Mass will be held at Noon Saturday, November 15, 2008 in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.   Father Frank Reece will officiate.

The family will receive friends following Mass.

Her body is being returned to her hometown of Cheran, Michoacan, Mexico for burial in the San Francisco Cemetery.

LOREN DENISON BAKER

Loren Denison Baker, 91, of Indian Trail, went home to be with the Lord, Thursday, November 06, 2008 at Brookside Rehabilitation & Care.

Surviving are his wife:  Evelyn Gorman Baker of Burnsville; a daughter:  Arlene Motte of Burnsville; sons:  Dennis Ralph Baker of Richmond, Virginia and Robert E. Baker of Burnsville.

Private family services will be held at a later date.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of Yancey County, 856 Georges Fork Road, Burnsville, NC 28714.

Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home is assisting the Baker family.

KELLEY LEE PENLAND

Kelley Lee Penland, 76, of Possum Trot, passed away Wednesday, November 5, 2008 in Brookside Rehabilitation and Care.  A native of Yancey County, he was a son of the late Herman and Ada Doan Penland.  He was preceded in death by a son, Herman Penland and a brother, Junior Penland.  A U.S. Army Veteran, Kelley was a loving husband, father and grandfather.

Surviving are his wife of 51 years:  Sarah Honeycutt Penland; a daughter:  Susie Whitson of Burnsville; a granddaughter:  Jessica Whitson of Wilkesboro; a great granddaughter:  Hailey Watkins of Wilkesboro and a sister:  Myrtle Honeycutt of Burnsville.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Saturday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Rev. Blaine Whitson will officiate.  Burial will be in the Penland Cemetery on Possum Trot Road with military graverites conducted by Sgt. E. Randolph Chapter 57 DAV.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

MILAM LEWIS

Milam Lewis, 90, formerly of Little Creek passed away Monday, November 3, 2008 in Mountain Ridge Wellness Center in Black Mountain.  A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late Goldman and Sue Emma Bradford Lewis.  She was also preceded in death by a brother, Arvil Lewis.

Surviving are a daughter:  Barbara Trotter and husband, Jerry; 4 grandchildren:  Brenda Greene and husband, James, Kathy Whittington and husband, Bobby, Rebecca Bridges and husband, Perry, and Jerry Wayne Trotter and wife, Darla, all of Slayden, TN; a special niece:  Kathy Rhymer of Marion and several other nieces and nephews; 11 great grandchildren and 13 great-great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Thursday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Rev. Bill Mitchell will officiate.  Burial will be in the Arvil Lewis Cemetery on Little Creek.

The family will receive friends from 6 until 8:00 P.M. Wednesday at the funeral home.

CLARA McPETERS

Clara McPeters, 90, of the Low Gap Community passed away Friday, October 31, 2008 at Brookside Rehabilitation and Care. A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late Talmadge and Allie Hensley McMahan and the wife of Carmel McPeters who died in 1992. She was also preceded in death by sisters Agnes Patton, Zula McPeters, Johnsie Rathburn, Pearl Harris and Kathleen Boone and brothers Wade and Earl McMahan.

Surviving are her daughter:  Barbara Biggs of Nebo, a sister: Ruby Honeycutt of Burnsville, four grandsons and six great grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held at 3:30 P.M. Sunday in the Eddie McMahan Cemetery at Low Gap. The Rev. Jerry Shelton will officiate.

The family will receive friends from 2 until 3 P.M. Sunday at Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.

EARL BOONE

Earl Boone, 95, of Marion, passed away Tuesday, October 28, 2008, at his home.  A native of Yancey County, he was a son of the late Will and Arrie Jones Boone, and the husband of Georgia Parker Boone who died in 1997.  He was also preceded in death by a sister:  Dorothy Carroway; and, 3 brothers:  Harold, Elmer and John Boone.  Earl was a retired employee of Air Preheater in Marion.

Surviving are 7 daughters:  Carless Briggs and Clara Lee Briggs of Burnsville, Darless Watson of Charlotte, Phyllis Bradshaw of Morganton, Jennie Smith of Marion, Sanath Honeycutt of Unicoi, TN and Noma Walker of Marion; 5 sons:  Calvin Boone of Celo, Larry Boone of Lenoir, Leslie,   C. W. and Paul Boone of Marion, and Charlie Boone of Burnsville; 36 grandchildren; 43 great grandchildren; and, 12 great, great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 2PM Friday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home in Burnsville.  The Rev. Roscoe Briggs, Jr. will officiate.  Burial will be in the Gurley Cemetery at Celo.

The family will receive friends from 6 until 8PM Thursday at the funeral home.

PHILLIP MICHAEL JONES

Phillip Michael Jones, 70, of Burnsville went home to be with the Lord Monday, October 27, 2008 at his home.  A native of Yancey County, he was a son of the late Milton and Vaughtie McIntosh Jones.  He was also preceded in death by brothers:  Jack, Robert and Billy Jones.  Phillip was a retired carpenter, a loving husband, father, pap-paw and friend to all who knew him.

Surviving are his wife of 38 years, JoAnn Dulaney Jones; a daughter:  Jennifer Bennett and husband, Jeremy; a son:  Brian Jones and wife, Tina; a granddaughter:  Ryleigh Paige Jones; 3 grandsons:  Austin, Zachory and Evan Bennett all of Burnsville.

Funeral services will be held at 8:00 P.M. Wednesday in Victory Baptist Church of which he was a Charter Member.  Revs. Scot Garland and Roger Hilemon will officiate.  A graveside service will be held at 11:00 A.M. Thursday in the McIntosh Cemetery on West Glendale Avenue.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 P.M. prior to the service at the church.

BEUNA DEYTON EDWARDS

Beuna Deyton Edwards, 94, of Green Mountain, passed away Sunday, October 26, 2008 at Brookside Rehabilitation and Care Center.  A native of Yancey County, she was the wife of the late Clay Earl Edwards and the daughter of the late Charlie Mack and Molly Belle Riddle Deyton.  She was a member of Covy Rock Free Will Baptist Church.  She was also preceded in death by sisters:  Irene McKinney, Anna Laws, Ruby Jones and Jean Deyton and brothers:  Cecil Deyton, R. B. Deyton, Fate Deyton and Charles Deyton.  Beuna was a loving mother, grandmother and friend to all that knew her.

Surviving are her daughter:  Charlotte Edwards Anglin and husband, Roy Lee, of Green Mountain; two granddaughters:  Angie Anglin of Green Mountain and Michelle Rider and husband, James, of Green Bay, Wisconsin; three great grandchildren:  Kellen McCort, Josh Rider and Katie Rider; a sister:  Zelda McKinney of Hickory and a brother:  Frank Deyton of Green Mountain. 

Funeral services will be held at 8:00 PM Tuesday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Revs. James McKinney and Russell Hughes will officiate.  A graveside service will be held at 11:00 AM Wednesday in the Deyton-Riddle Cemetery on Brush Creek.

The family will receive friends from 6:30 until 8:00 PM prior to the service at the funeral home.

CARROLL GIBBS

Carroll Gibbs, 67, of Boone, passed away Friday, October 24, 2008 at his home.  A native of Yancey County, he was a son of the late Bascombe and Annie Westall Gibbs.  He was a US Army Vietnam Veteran.  Carroll enjoyed being outdoors; especially fishing and being in the woods.  He was preceded in death by brothers: Harold Gibbs and C.D. Gibbs; sisters: Thelma Holden and Pauline Hensley.

Surviving are his wife: Glenda Stewart, and daughter: Angie Stewart, of Boone; and a sister: Joyce Gardner, of Burnsville.  Nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 PM Wednesday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Rev. Charles Carroll will officiate.  Burial will be in the Autrey Cemetery at South Estatoe Baptist Church.

The family will receive friends two hours prior to the service at the funeral home.

EDD HEDRICK

Edd Hedrick, 91, of the Ramseytown Community, passed away Monday, October 20, 2008, at the home of his son.  A native of Yancey County, he was a son of the late Rix and Sarah Ann Whitson Hedrick, and the husband of Rosetta Honeycutt Hedrick who died in 1989.  He was a member and deacon of Byrd’s Chapel Baptist Church, and a retired employee of Glen Raven Mills.

Surviving are a daughter:  Rhonelda Laws and husband, Ernest; and a son:  Chester Hedrick and wife, Barbara, all of Burnsville; a sister:  Sadie Greene of Marion; 2 grandsons:  Jeffrey Shawn Hedrick and Kevin Gene Hedrick; and, 2 great grandchildren:  John Fuller Hedrick and Abigail Hedrick.

Funeral services will be held at 2PM Wednesday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  The Revs. Roger Hylemon and Bill Mitchell will officiate.  Burial will be in the Hedrick Family Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 6 until 8PM Tuesday at the funeral home.
